Some music I recently bought from Aquarius:
Ghost In Stormy Nights [Ah, finally. Amazing cover version of Cromagnon's "Caledonia" tops it off.]
Circle Tyrant (Latitudes 0:10) [Circle does krautrock meets black metal!]
Aufgehoben Messidor
Boris/Michio Kurihara Rainbow [Boris with the guitarist from White Heaven = gold.]
Ruins of Beverast Rain Upon the Impure [Very droney, doomy black metal.]
The Gault Even As All Before Us [I've been looking for this one for so long! It's a band with John Gossard of Weakling on vocals described at Aquarius as the Joy Division of doom metal. This is a recent repressing free of the nasty glitches that plagued the original batch.]
Asunder Works Will Come Undone [The newest from Gossard's other, more well-known doom metal band.]
Robert Henke Layering Buddha [This record is absolutely godly. Some of the best ambient I've ever heard, I think. Samples here: http://www.monolake.de/layeringbuddha.html ] _________________ antitype.livejournal.com | last.fm |

Daedelus' Exquisite Corpse just really clicked with me for the first time. Maybe because I played it directly after Dabrye's Two/Three, which I find pretty boring despite all its critical praise. And Corpse has real texture and complexity, a Beach Boys psychedelia wash. Makes me want to go back to his other stuff. I know I hated The Weather a few years ago, but maybe I'll give it another shot now. |

Also: Derek Bailey's Play Backs has him improvising on guitar over drum tracks sent to him by various people. As it's from '98 it has its fair shair of IDM/dnb drumtracks, and the man cuts a serious rug over them. |

i like venetian snares quite a bit on certain records (his piano ambient pieces aren't that good, comparatively) but he does look like a bag of weed. _________________

He's got a bit more of the distinctly-Scandanavian-almost-Downs-syndrome thing going on; I see the similarities though. |

Aaron Funk does look a bit like the retarded brother of Richard D. James who, when not being fucking terrifying, is quite a sexy man:
He has always reminded me a lot of my best friend from high school, both in his looks and his demented sense of humor. _________________ antitype.livejournal.com | last.fm |

My brother in law thinks the dancer playing Richard D. James in the Windowlicker video is really Richard D. James. He thinks that's his real face. |

My brother in law is a house DJ / club promoter from back in the day, so he should know better.
I think it looks more like Richard Branson.

My friend Elaine has been telling me about Final Fantasy for years now, but I never got around to listening to his stuff for one reason or another. Now that I have, I think it's fucking AMAZING and this second album is a masterpiece. _________________ resetbutton.net: videogames for unattractive people |

I don't like it as much, it seems less focused and more abstract. Most of the tracks on He Poos Clouds feel like full songs with arrangements, but the stuff on Has a good home feels less complete. _________________ resetbutton.net: videogames for unattractive people |

Aw. I'll have to go give it a listen sometime, anyway.
I haven't been listening to much lately, for some reason, but Rφyksopp has been getting some play. Their album Melody A.M. is awesome and maybe a bit cheesy.
Guilty pleasure: Spank Rock. |

I can't stop listening to this damn PCP Tornado reissue, I've had it on constant loop all friggin' morning. It's only, like, six minutes long, that a hell of a lot of playthroughs. Six minutes that I'm totally not sick of yet at all. No way in hell. Maybe I'll get around to listening to the second disc later today. _________________

Yes, that was a very solid intro. Only was quite catchy too and I liked The Line Begins to Blur and Beside You in Time. I remember Home being pretty good as well.
I feel that My Violent Heart promises good things for the new album. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

This absolute classic album, it's a classic. I'd even say it's better than the previous one, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus but that would be a hard choice to make since there is an absolute zero of difference in quality so it's only really comes down to a preference in vocalists, which is also a hard choice to make. _________________

I take back what I said about Has a good home. I think because I've only ever listened to the first half of the CD closely, I wasn't giving it a fair shake. Some of the later tracks on the album are amazing. I have no problems recommending it now. _________________ resetbutton.net: videogames for unattractive people |

Yeah, I've got all three tracks from Year Zero that have been "leaked," and those are on steady rotation. Lately, I've been revisiting my Cure catalogue and have been listening quite earnestly to Mastodon's Blood Mountain. |

T.I. and Tom Waits have been in heavy rotation on my computer for over a month now, and I have started re-listening to Coltrane's Blue Train and Giant Steps while I write.
Has anybody here listened to that Deerhunter cd that's the talk of the town? I usually try to stay in touch with Atlanta bands, but I missed them when they popped over for a show in Athens, and I don't want to buy the cd until I hear more about it. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. Alright, so Deerhunter is a pretty good thing. I'm thinking post-punk through Kranky's post-rock/electronics lense, with tiny bits of that DFA dancey thing and that Wolf Eyes/Black Dice noisy thing on the side. Maybe Wire meets Pan American? Not entirely at once though; there'll be separate elements of each, and they may be a little guilty of falling into the pop-song-turns-to-extended-"freakout!" formula. It'll take more time to get a better picture of it.
But it's pretty good on first listen, make no mistake. |

I just got Venomous Concept's Retroactive Abortion album and I am lost as to the reason why I didn't buy it sooner 'cos it kicks a whole bunch of fuckin' ass. Remember back to the days when grindcore could still be identified as hardcore before everyone started fusing it with death metal and lost the plot in most cases, it's exactly that. It's even got the same crusty production from that time only done in a way that doesn't feel like a throwback.
I really hope they do another album one of these days. _________________

There's a new Metroid Metal track up (Super Metroid Prelude) and it's good.
I got a box of 25 cds for $25 from Asian Man Records and I'm slowly working through it. Some of it is shit, a lot of it is good, and I'm glad I developed a taste for ska. I'll probably write short reviews for each album.
(Keyboard has by far been the worst, I'd recommend it for a laugh.) _________________

so dhex, I just listened to that second mix (I think I still have the first somewhere but I haven't listened yet). Good stuff! I've always loved a live bit or two in mixes, and the psychedelic bits are good too. Have you listened to any Henry Jacobs? I think you'd like him. |

Whoa, how'd you manage that deal?
Also, if you're feeling the ska, you should check out the album "Kids on the Street" by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies. As per all of their records, there's an amazing variety of musical types they play through (yes, contrary to popular belief, they were NOT just another neo-swing band in the mid-'90's), but this one has the most ska/punk flavor to it. Also: early Goldfinger, Less Than Jake before Borders & Boundaries (that album and everything beyond it are still great, but it's more hard rock with horns than ska), and the Mighty Mighty fucking Bosstones. Of course, those are all pretty high-profile bands, and you're a lot more likely to find some great ones you've never heard of through a label like Asian Man. |

One of the games my company (although not me specifically) is working on currently has Fugazi's "Waiting Room" on the soundtrack, which made me a triple take the first time it came up. We'll see if this is a placeholder or what; the idea that Fugazi would either lose the licensing or allow it to be on a videogame soundtrack is a little weird. |

A Less Than Jake album (Pezcore) showed up in the box, actually. So far my favorites are Potshot, King Apparatus, and the Blue Meanies. Also MU330's live album fucking rules. The deal was advertised in their newsletter, in which Mike Park asked the fans not to spread the word on message boards or anything like that. I'm thinking he took a decent hit offering this deal. On the other hand, I made out like a bandit. _________________
