this actually isn't terrible, even if harvey smith's soundbite at the end comes across like he's a jerkoff. (comparing a serial soap like desperate housewives to addiction in any sense is dumb, if not actually irresponsible.)
but what i wonder about, and i truly do wonder about this, is why everyone has to be included in the category of people who like games. it can't all be economic, so some of it is emotional. a need to be loved or respected? i don't know.
not every thing is for everyone. and that's the actual super duper good part of this supposedly fractured, horrible world we live in. you do what you want. i do what i want.
of course, in a perfect world people would understand that employing the state to enforce your choices over others when their own choices do not actually interfere in your life is coercive and morally wrong, but as far as this stuff is concerned (entertainment and the like) i think we're pretty close to ok on that. jack thompson is a joke, the moral majority is being reconfigured back into its original incarnation as a progressive christian left (with some systemic hybridity) and andrea dworkin is dead. art is safe. games are safe. they've learned the lesson of all the other major entertainment industries - every 4 years someone has to pick on you in order to keep their boots on. such is life, send in your donations and tone down the child murder.
but i guess my actual question is this: why are game developers, artists, students and nascent academics so desperate to be loved beyond their actual audiences? especially the academics - i don't think i've ever heard a film studies kid actually expect to engage the public in any real way.* and yet game folk still fall over each other, year after year, trying desperately to be loved.
*such is the similarity between monastic orders and academic pursuits. neither is meant to engage with the public in any real way. _________________

Raimondo+Mishima = makes sense, in some ways, if you take his love for Putin-style Russian nationalism and Catholicism into account. Though the pairing makes me aesthetically uncomfortable.

This may be amateur psychology on my part, of a really bad sort even, but I think it's some kind of nerd self-hatred thing. These people aren't that confident in their own aesthetics and won't be satisfied until everyone agrees that their hobbies aren't just a big waste of time. Hmph, "these people;" as if I don't count as one of them. But I don't care what people think about my videogame habit, since I don't know many "people" to begin with.
Strange that nobody ever says that reading is a waste of time, even though a good chunk of it is just that. _________________

Man, I was just about think that Raimondo was an okay guy. And then you linked that. Thanks for bringing me back to Earth. This just further cements that Rand was the Xenogears of the nerds of yesteryear. Atlas Shrugged must look good to a 15-year-old, but I couldn't get through ten pages without putting it away (the same with Fountainhead). There was something very comic book-like, in the corniest, most ham-fisted sense, about the way she set the scene in those books, I even considered reading on for the pure comedy of it all. Though reason won out and into the garbage they went. _________________

a friend of mine is trying to get me to promise to read atlas shrugged just so, when i make fun of it, i can honestly say i read it.
i do not think so. this summer i'm going to read up on game theory and try to teach myself soldering and some math. i don't know if i have enough room for cardboard in there. _________________

after all, i read the murakami collection too, in the interest of fairness. and i like burroughs, whose characters are really just stand-ins for routines and ideas. _________________

I was doing a search on mentats for a Fallout thread, and found:
"... black mentats..."
Scroll down if the intro is boring.
I think "The Doom Projectors" would be a great name for a band. _________________ I felt sheer anarchic joy when I ran over my first pedestrian. |

there are ups and downs to being self-taught in a number of things. you learn in a natural kind of way, but you also miss a lot of things. i missed "don't try to catch a soldering iron that's been on for 10 minutes" and am now contemplating a life where i just play kalimba and maybe busk for change. _________________

Little boy: Fiiiive.
Dour mom: Well then, don't you think... [they go out of hearing range]

I cracked up at one comment, and then saw it was dhex's. There is something entertaining about a genuine "fuck them" coming in amongst a bunch of finger wagging and humph!ing. Although this did remind me why I hardly ever read the comment sections on websites - I don't like the feeling of wanting to choke someone on my weekends. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. Yeah, there is apparently a big argument now between the outlet and the agency that reported the picture as being used. The latter saying that they never indicated that it was anything other than an image used while the former AAAHHH IT'S TOO LATE THEY WERE RIGHTTTT WWWOOSSSHHH _________________ Come to me, Mordel. You might find this a good read. It seems even the main proponent of "the nuclear attack was unjust" movement, Howard Zinn, is completely unfamiliar with the relevant sources. I get pretty easily annoyed by comments like that, because even though they're dumb in and of themselves, they also tend to throw their historical understanding behind people like Zinn. _________________

Theoretically, the attack could have been prevented [edit: which is a totally different question from whether it was unjust or not; in my opinion, the question of justice doesn't apply to WWII at all, the whole thing was just one big slaughterhouse without any redeeming characteristics at all, and if you do want to draw any lessons out of the war in the Pacific, then here's one: being practical (America) wins out against decadent romantics (Japa) every time, a sad lesson for nerds the world over]. The guy who wrote "The Decline and Fall of the Japanese Empire" (one of my favorite books, btw) blames the Russians for not getting Japanese peace overtures to the U.S. in time (though that book was written in the 70s and lacked alot of the material available to researchers now; plus, the Japanese were mighty ornery at the Russkies for August Storm).
In any case, I don't think anyone's qualified to comment on whether nuking was cool or not without first having read Tsuyoshi Hasegawa's "Racing the Enemy," one of the recent and more original accounts of the end of the Pacific War. In his version, the nukes were neither deliberate malice against a defeated foe nor the magic pill that slapped those Japs awake, but something else altogether (like a lot of recent Japanese historians, he proves -- with ample sources -- that it was Operation August Storm, the Soviet's annihilatory advance against the Kwantung Army (which had started the whole East Asian War in the first place) which made the Japanese military junta lose all hope).
Also, seconding Scratch about that Tory rag. _________________
