Want to have your artwork seen by approximately 1/100ths of the people who visit the site? Create a banner or two like the one you see at the top of our forums and front page and share them here. Banners should be 500 X 100 pixels in size, jpeg format, and have a file size of under 40 KB. Banners must be game related in some way, and should be appropriate for our readers (ie: No Guy Game banners). We reserve the right to be extremely slow in putting any banner into circulation and to not use a banner for any reason no matter how petty and foolish we may seem.

Thanks, and get to the banner making!

-Wes

Firstly love the banner system set up here. Like a magical bag of memories where you never quite know what you'll get. Especially nifty since I can recognise the majority of them.

How many do you have?

Otherwise, that looks great dhex.

Can these banners be ANYTHING game related?
Even really obscure gaming stuff?
In-game sprites as well as cover art?

What about homebrew games?

Who do we email these to? I'll try and get one (or a few) sent in once I have time. (and by have time, I mean run out of gin and/or stop playing the minnish cap)

Actually, this could be great fun, I have a hard drive full of obscure game artwork that could be cropped and used.

1) about 100
2) Pretty much. Avoid anything that is too pornographic (Im debating on removing the Doom Comic one even). We retain the right to disapprove any submissions though
3) Yea
4) You have not run across the ones that are photograps (Megaman legos, MGS figurines)
5) Well, yes. If it is really, really, homebrew (like you made it with a frined and it never made it to the internet kind of thing) then it will probably not get approved.
6) Just send me a PM if you have any or if you can load them to the net and link to them here that is best so that other people can see it too. Just make sure it is the right size.

Cool, thanks for the info.

Actually, the banner idea is so incredibly simple, its been quite easy finding some nice images.

I mean incredibly simple in the best terms btw, the fact it changes with each page keeps it refreshing. Its like gaming memories in quick bite sized form. And yes, Ive seen the Megaman lego one now, good stuff.

Should have a dozen or so for you soon.-

As for the obscure stuff, I was actually thinking of making one based on my DC homebrew stuff, but if your not into the DC homebrew scene, theyll be lost on most people.

#3 looks weird, you might want to remake that one.

#10 is also at a pretty poor resolution.

And banner 21 is a bit short on the left-hand side.

#3 really does look like that: a blue woman in a spaceship. I made a slightly different version, but if the composition is a problem best to leave it out.

On reflection, 10, 19 and 21 dont look as good as I thought they would. Feel free to scrap them. The poor resolution on #10 is due to it being a bad scanning originally.

Also, did anyone actually recognise that #15 was from the Sega CD Snatcher comic book? I might make another one with more recognisable imagery, like Random or Gillian.

I also sent a 3rd zip file in. It includes a nifty wine bottle image I reckon MGS fans will like Wink
Sorry for the delay, hotmail has been acting up very badly today. Included with it is a readme explaining the images.

I also recall that they had it at a party for completion of the game they could be found. Don't remember where I saw that info though.

Yup, I stumbled across it on my research when writing a very comprehensive Metal Gear history article for gamesTM. Sadly my boss never used the image.

Apparently its one of the more sought after collectables, but only the original dev team have them. Said to be a full bodied red wine, but I know nothing more about it.

There is a whole ocean of totally weird crap relating to the MG series.
Actually, the series in general is filled with weird things going on, mimicking the in-game plot almost. Someday gaming historians will look back and chuckle.

Why?
Surely it must be a dream job, like film archiver/historian.

I think it would rock to be paid for chronicling the history of gaming in ridiculous depth. Documenting each and every trivial fact in its entirity, able to highlight the connections between things, and most importantly of all, being able to explain away so much confusion that exists in places. I think it's much needed since there is next to no actual documented information on some things older than a certain date.

because it will seem weird.

i am somewhat ambivalent about gaming academia in general. for the most part, what i've dug into suffers from the same applications of critical theory that art, literature and cultural studies suffer from. that is, they're irrelevant to the uses and abuses of actual interaction in real life, beyond the french textbooks. there's nothing more sure to suck the fun out of a great poem, play, novel or piece of music than to read deeply self-involved texts written by those who have neither the ability nor drive to create such works themselves.

vg crit isn't there yet because not enough time has passed for people, generally far more ideologically motivated than the folks who love the form, to latch onto it. i figure that'll take another 10 years to get really entrenched, with the resultant blather about whether it's appropriate or right or just plain decadent, etc.

having already seen the maoist video game reviews, joke or not, we are not far behind. there is plenty to criticize about the form, but to become an academic mainstay, they must be criticized within the proper frame of irrelevant references.

Well said dhex, I agree completely about how some things can have the fun sucked out of them by waffly examination if not done correctly.

I was implying/thinking more that such people rather than commenting on things would hunt down and record things. In a similar way to what games journalists do, except maybe more accurately and professionally with less opinion.

A Simple case in point is release dates. Why is it I have such tremendous difficulty finding when a game was released prior to 1995? I can get the year, the month if I am lucky, but the day? For different regions? Not a chance, unless it's a massively mainstream game like Sonic.

What about cover art (this is a big concern of mine)? Manual scans? Accurate listings of people who made these games? These things should be kept somewhere, easily accessed by anyone. At the very least it would make nostalgic retro articles easier to write.

Admittedly this is happening with the internet, but very slowly and very disconnected. Some of the best archive sites are buried under a mountain of garbage.

But before this topic derails too much (perhaps a general topic regarding such things is needed?)
Thanks for the compliment Mr Toups!
Alas, most of my banners tend to be very retro, I need to get some more modern screens.

As for Mother banners, perhaps we could make some Mother 1+2 Hybrid banners? Might it also include imagery for the unreleased Mother 3?
The in-game graphics have a wonderful look to them.

Well after much tweaking I finally was able to get a few banners made, although I will still be doing the wall papers if anyone actually cares. Well I hope you all like what I came up with. Customized from Mega Drive Inserts.

Bare Knuckle 2 {Streets of Rage 2}

Gunstar Heroes

Strider Hiryu

Odd. Adblock in Firefox is blocking the banners. I can't figure out why, either.

Hm. Guess I'll live without them.

Probably something in the algorithm for it, or what ever Wes did. Anyways, that sucks... I think like 30% of our traffic uses firefox.

I have adblock installed, and I can see them.

I thought adblock just ignored what url's (w/ whatever wildcards) that you told it to? Isn't there a way to adjust the block list?

I've tried to adjust it, but I use a third-party file for all my filters (a fairly popular one: http://www.geocities.com/pierceive/adblock - works extremely well. In this case, perhaps too well). I've tried editing it, but it seems to be all garbledygook and I can't exactly pinpoint which string seems to be blocking the banners out here.

Yeah, I use firefox and I haven't had any problems. It probably just blocks any images that appear to be ad banner size. Not sure how to help that...

Master Fighter - I noticed that most of your banners look a bit, umm, horizontally stretched. The banners look a lot better if you can stretch them in all directions (or better yet, not at all). The images you're using are awesome, but they look kind of like you're watching something in widescreen that was intended to be seen on a normal sized screen. The Megaman 5 one is a notable exception.

Just some advice!

Yeah that was the problem I was talking about in my WALL PAPERS thread. By trying to put too much of a picture into the dimensions of 500 x 100, things usually get that Anamorphic Widescreen look when badly transfered to standard PAN & SCAN TV format. Thus I tried my best to utilize the picture cropping effect enough to where when I put the pics to the dimensions asked, it still stretches the image out a bit, but nowhere near as bad as it would normally look. I generally make banners in the dimensions of 425 x 204 and don't get that mushed in effect.

Thanks for the creative criticism though, as it helps a dude out with wanting to strive to better execution of mastery.

Bingo, its the main guy sitting in a bar. I like to think of it as a Tim Rogers banner, since at least twice Ive seen him mention the game in articles of his.

In all honesty, its borderline between a sick work of genius, and the worst game ever. It gave people ridiculous challenges, like singing kareoke into the Famicom mic (!), or leaving the controller untouched for an hour. Apparently the game is impossible to complete.

You can also do wierd things, like go to a bar, drink to much beer and then black out. When you wake up, you're back home and your wife is trying to beat you to death.
So you leave, and spend the morning at a pachinko parlour, or sitting in an empty cinema. Damn, I wish someone would translate it, Im certain Im missing a lot of subtlety in it.

Its... weird.

Still, I thought an image of a dude in a bar reflects what TGQ is all about. Right guys?
