It has what I'm seeing as central to the definition: backtracking and new area availability based on power-up collection. |
I second this. I've always thought of Rygar as a fantasy-flavored Metroid with more varied environments. |

This is the most jovial image of you I've ever had.

I like La-Mulana a lot. Is it possible to finish it without translation?

For anyone who runs into this thread via Google like I did, I just wanted to chime in that we've had a La-Mulana translation for a while now!... http://agtp.romhack.net/project.php?id=lamulana |

Well I'm going to be trendy and add Shadow Complex. I hope it's good!

The plan was to hope everyone in those old threads had email notifications turned on so they would all get emails and come back here. Didn't quite pan out, though. _________________

Yes.
Only here though, since it's such a rare occasion. I turn them off everywhere else unless I consider the thread to be MEGA IMPORTANT which is never. _________________

Anyway, blast from the past!
Shadow Complex was pretty good, yeah. And I checked out that La Mulana translation about a year or so back but never got very far in it. Definitely a great game though, I hope someday I am man enough to tackle it all the way to the end. _________________ Mr. Mechanical |

I'm going to finally play Metroid Prime thanks to the trilogy release on Wii. Does that count as a Metroidvania? _________________

Surprisingly, I'm pretty sure it doesn't!

-Wes | Okay I'd like to hear why now as I'm pretty sure the entire game design is basically "Metroid in 3D first person", which doesn't change anything about how Metroid plays except the perspective in which you experience it. _________________ Mr. Mechanical |

Don't get me wrong, Metroid Prime is my favorite game of all time, but I was under the impression that it had to be side scrolling. There isn't much separating Metroidvanias from Zeldalikes if you take that away.
If you disagree that's good! Tell me why!

-Wes | Ah, well if you only count 2D games then yeah I guess Prime would be out. However I was under the impression that a Metroidvania was merely a game where you explore an environment using powerups you find along the way that help you to further explore the environment. In which case, well, a lot of games fall under that definition so it's probably not that helpful if you're looking to define something down. _________________ Mr. Mechanical |

Went back and re-read part of the first page of this thread and, yeah, I think based on the definition we came up with, Metroid Prime wouldn't be a Metroidvania.
But man, it's good. If you start playing it and want to talk about it I'd contribute to a thread. (even though I haven't played it since 2003).

Oh I've played it a number of times though I doubt I have anything new to say about it that hasn't already been said 'round these parts. _________________ Mr. Mechanical |

Woah. Woah. There's a game called Holy Diver? If you ride a tiger in it I dub it "best game ever" status.

I know this thread is old, but just for the sake of completeness, there are also two fairly recent fan made metroidvania games, Metroid Remix and AM2R. |
