This is being set up so I can have small updates regarding a large MMO we're working on. We're only 30,000 or so words in and it's already been an adventure.

"Eye of Wisdom honorary phylactery"

Noted! Hopefully I can get you in. When we were working on Tabula Rasa, we got jack squat. I wanted to sign in for a bit for reference, which was offered with L2, and was told I could sign up to fileplanet for $15 whatever and get in the beta. What a deal!

So this isn't going well. We sent about 150 questions for around 10,000 words, and so far the developers are not happy. The client didn't seem to mind at first but is now getting antsy.

Look, I don't know what "Beared Vengeance" means, okay? Could you enlighten me? The answers from the developers tend to be 'It's English! What's your problem?!'

Continuing not to go well.

Out of ~80 question, about 12 were answered, only 6-7 were actual answers. The other questions that had text in the answer box amounted to "We don't know." Actually, it was to Bearded Vengeance, they said that it doesn't mean anything and doesn't need to mean anything, and then in the rest they said "See No. 3," which was the Bearded Vengeance response. Great.

They continue to be rude as well, talking down to us through their responses. Rage.

look on the bright side: at least when the reviews drop that make fun of the translation, they'll turn around and blame you anyway.

Yeah, I know. This is, without a doubt, the most confusing project I've ever been a part of.

I'm pretty lost as to what is going on. Our contact will give us a spreadsheet of answers that are either like the one I mentioned above - "No clue!" - or like today, where they simply say "Nonsense. This means someone who worships the snake god." What was the Worshipper of the Snake God translated as? Zombiist. It's like they have 4 people on the development team and 4 on the translation team fielding our questions, and only 1 is making any kind of sense. "Powwow cap"? Wizard's hat. "Bear stigma leather armor"? A fancy name for leather armor. And so on (and on and on and on).

The differences are pretty striking between whoever is answering the questions. The guy yesterday was a dick - at one point saying "By the way, no translator or review should tell us this." - and knew absolutely nothing, while this person(s) is knocking them out of the park. I have a feeling the next set will go back to being gibberish - "It's called Fish Beam of Rage, fuckface.".

This is way better than "Beared Vengeance", which is what you wrote originally. I'm absolutely using this phrase somewhere in my next videogame.

I dunno, Bearded Vengeance sounds kinda cool.

Like it could be Ancestral Vengeance.

Or maybe just Hairy Vengeance. ZZ Top all flying at you, fists blaring.

Nope! But we are still working on it. We will wrap everything up July 26th.

I found out that it was the translators who were making the rude remarks. Man. The developers made a comment that anyone with a knowledge of basic Chinese and a dictionary shouldn't be having these kinds of problems. (Ba-ZING)

Did someone really paint that in anticipation of Mega Man 9? Because if so that is brilliant.

That's fantastic. It's almost too good! I really thought someone had just photoshopped a 9 onto one of the orginal paintings. They should have made him more ugly!

Bearded Vengeance should be a magical suit of armor that is actually a Chewbacca costume soaked in PCP.

So you're part of the localisation team turning a game from Russian to English?

This is a title developed by a Chinese company and being localized by a German firm. I'm heading up the editing of the English version. I know some great translation companies, but the one used on this is not one of them. We are now on the fifth round of Q&A for a 10,000-word spreadsheet. The developers can only respond sporadically, and their answers tend to be how much the original term doesn't make sense or match the actual Chinese. I think everyone but the translators are scratching their heads at this point. Going by what they tell us via the Q&A forms, the translators think they are doing awesome.

I think they are directing that at us. I guess us not taking 'Don't know. Probably a sword or sthg' as an adequate answer isn't sitting right with the translators.

I'd have called that "Bear-Blighter Armor". With a "Moot Cap".

I... just... sweet mother. I was told we were using an incorrect apostrophe form and that we needed to use some strange hooked version. I could never find out how they made it appear in arial so I had to copy/paste. Well, due to Excel having a weird character restriction in cells that blocks replacing all, I've had to insert them by hand. I spent about 20 minutes tonight inserting the damn things into a file only to be told that it was wrong, and the correct version was sent back, complete with the standard apostrophe. I have no clue what's going on anymore.

Praise the localization gods. I received word that some associates of ours are going to be retranslating the material. I doubt we'll be asked back on - I'd guess the people who hired us are out of cash - but at least the English will match the Chinese source. What a painful experience.

I hope to hear back from the proper contact today. I'm not entirely sure what we could do for them - don't they have a ton of people on that already? - but something is better than nothing. It would be nice to work on something that people have actually heard of before.

I've been reaching out to a few more companies recently. With the downtime, I figured I should work the ol' LinkedIn some more. I have 15 InMail credits built up, so I'm trying to get in touch with MMO-centric companies...and just anyone, really. I would like to finish out the year strong. We have a few more titles that may or may not happen, but they aren't dependent on us since we're simply part of a larger service being managed by a few consulting firms. We are cogs. Glorious cogs.

And contact! They keep asking if I'll be at TGS. I hadn't planned on this. Shoot. But, I have a translation studio lined up in case they want us to provide that ourselves, and now I'm just waiting for some questions to answer. Fingers still crosssssseeeeeeed.

Oh no, no plans on that. Even if I had the time, the budget wouldn't allow, thanks to two evacuations that ate up more than a few hundred bucks of disposable income.

It's great that you have an official holiday until the 11th - the 11th?! good god - but you're over two months behind in payment. I would appreciate being paid back for the costs I paid for out of pocket back in October.

Also, the last bit of news I've received from some clients is that 1C, who develops a whoooooooole lot of titles that are rebranded and published by other companies, cut around 35-40% of its workforce. Boooo!

Said game is now asking for its beta testers to spot and submit typos.

New game has been released and I read in a developer diary that they added shit after we went over it. Guh. The developer's erratic behavior also explains some of the audio complaints, which were incorrectly spliced into the original content, causing runovers and jibberish. Eh well, they were actually nice to deal with - seems time got away from them.

Back to working on the game this thread was originally about. The crazy has been removed from the translation though, which has helped out quite a bit. Hopefully some expansions or something are announced so more starts to come in.

Oh, and it would help if we would get paid soon. The contact is on vacation, but apparently still handling 'emergencies,' just not ours. By the time she returns, it will be 4 months since the invoice was sent, 3 months overdue. Being out of pocket is awweessoommme.
