According to IGN's final review of Midnight Club 3 PSP:

Quote:
If you tried holding your breath for as long as it took to load up a race in this game, you might keel over. Typical loads are 70 seconds. For comparison's sake, that boot-up load in the PS2 versions of the GTA series, with all of the faces and the slow-crawling bar, that was typically between 75 and 90 seconds in those games. Using the industry-standard for loadtimes: I wasn't able to make a sandwich while waiting for the game to boot (I might have made it if I had a pre-sliced loaf of bread), but several times, I went to take a leak and still had plenty of time to wash and dry my hands before the race started up. Somebody's who's quick and has nothing to read might be able to drop something else off at the pool in that same time.

Why the fuck is this in a game review? The very fact that he made me think about him pissing and washing his hands in 70 seconds is really unfortunate. I don't want this stuff in a review. Someone let the grammar and structure slip, fine, but obviously a person in charge approves of this type of content, right? So then: is it actually appealing to a wide demographic of players to have analogies presented this way in a game review, and am I missing out on some "funny shit"?

Why the fuck are you reading an IGN review of Midnight Club 3 for the PSP is the question, buddy.

You must not read IGN much. Remember, they're catering to the younger crowd. You know, the kind that still find fart jokes funny. Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good fart joke as much as the next guy; it's just that IGN hasn't grasped that the fart joke is something of a delicacy in modern humor, and is something that should only be brought out when the time is right for one. Some people are still under the notion that it's always the right time for a fart joke though and-Oh fuck it, just don't read IGN. Myself, I check Gamespot if I want consumer oriented information regarding a game. They tend to score lower too, so you know they're not just pandering to some corporate stooge.

Not that I endorse them or anything.

I don't think any major gaming publication was spared Driver 3-Gate.

Gamespot is certainly the most reliable site.

Anyway, toilet humor has a long and proud tradition in gaming journalism that probably won't be wiped away anytime soon.

Also there is a "load times" pun to be made by someone less squeamish than myself.

I was having a discussion about how some games do loading times right (Metroid Prime does the gas/steam effect in doors, Tekken 5 has a mini game) while other don't and just give a loading screen. If a game like GTA and Jak 3 can have almost no loading screens (note I am not saying no loading) being as large as they are why do we still have loading screens? Why are they so long we can poop on them?

BioWare handles loading screens in a horribly distracting, fourth-wall-breaking way.

well, load times sorta break the wall anyway, what with the controller holding and all.

There's going to be a whole 'lotta streaming and pre-fetching on the next-gen consoles with 512 megs of ram (all of them) to work with. Our perception of load times and the whole concept of loading screens may change, to the point where a traditional console game "Loading Screen" is akin to...you know, rewinding a movie after you watch it.

"What does that mean? Nobody uses a VCR to watch movies nowadays."

Eventually nobody will use 32 or 64 megs of ram to make games.

One of the (many) reasons I didnīt finish Jade Empire. But this seems to be the current trend. I havenīt played a recent EA-game where the loading screens donīt ask me to try a different mode, or inform me in some incredibly stupid way that I absolutely need to unlock this or that car (ok, that was in Burnout 3 ...).

Is the gas/steam effect in Prime actually when it loads? Becuase it's really only a few places in the game, and it never really obscures your vision so much as to make any possible loading unnoticable. I did observe, however, that the delay between shooting a door and the hatch actually opening varies considerably. I think this is where it loads the next room. They reset anyway, so it probably just has one or a few rooms loaded at any given time.

This is a purely technical (and also out of date) question!

it gets fun when you're playing metroid prime 2 and the air is killing you while you're waiting for the next room to load and the door to open.

(actually, it doesn't.)

Airlocks would make a convenient device for this.

You could get away with it in a spacey setting too.

Conker: Live & Reloaded has the worst, most obtrusive, plain sickening load screen of all time.

The games loading times are actually quite good. But the screen makes me want to stop playing the game.

I loved my N64 and hated my Playstation solely because of loading times.
