it would seem, at least in america, that the DVR box has been eaten by tivo, never to emerge again. this is a problem for business applications because being able to record media appearances is helpful if you're scheduling them and don't want to pay outrageous fees to an outside company to record them for you.

sadly our phillips dvr is dying. the vhs loader is puking on itself and getting stuck; the scheduling is getting a bit wonky and the incoming signal is not doing well either. dvd burning is still ok, at least for now.

i have done some searching and the answer has largely been "nope, sorry, no longer available." is there a solution beyond building a pc with an AV bridge and some kind of scheduling software? i would prefer not to have to do that here because it's shitty enough having to service a dvr that i didn't build.

I think it's either Tivo or DIY nowadays. Fortunately, DIY is fairly easy now and any windows box with a Tuner will do it using Vista's Media Center functionality right out of the box. Unfortunately, it looks like the networks may have gotten to Microsoft, and the videos I used to download are suddenly being DRMed. If you're burning to a disc I don't think this is going to be an issue though.

Alternatively, there's plenty of free software for any other OS you may prefer.
