I did not pick up on that, they put mudcrabs in the game! I'm glad to see they're still motherfucking defiant despite it all. I hope they put a guy named Fargoth in the vault, fuck those pantshitters. _________________

shit, i didn't even think ign had a reputation left to trade on anyway.
still - that's very, very strange. i know profit margins for specialty press are absolutely razor-thin, but that's really ridiculous. _________________

So I've been playing the original Fallout this week since I learned that it runs well in Linux under Wine. I had tried playing it before in DOSBox and it was just too slow. Not really sure how I missed this when it was new, I guess I was too busy playing Daggerfall(oh the irony).
Anyway, I like Fallout a lot. Does anyone know if the story Harold recounts to you in The Hub is an account of the events of Wasteland? If so, it really makes me want to play Wasteland! I'm already a big fan of the Bard's Tale series and Dragon Wars.
I'm still on the fence about Fallout 3. I'd probably enjoy it, but I haven't yet seen anything to convince me it is as good as the early reviews suggest. |

i love fallout and all, and i played through all three bard's tale games as a kid, but wasteland is impenetrably hard. i.e. they don't make em like they used to.
the only game that's as unforgiving, in my limited experience, is (tile)crawl.
edit: the story he tells you isn't about the original wasteland, if i'm thinking of the story you're thinking of. _________________

It was something about finding the source of the mutants in the Northwest. There was a doctor with him name Richard Grey(?) and maybe another guy named Mark. All kinds of craziness, and robots, happened. I just loved the way he told it. |

No, honestly, I'm quite surprised there isn't a fan project to recreate Van Buren at this point. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

I finished Fallout for the first time today. What an excellent game. I really lament that RPG design is moving further and further away from P&P games. Some of the best western RPGs are those, like Fallout, which attempted to move closer to the ideal of P&P simulation. Hell, with D&D 4th edition, even P&P is moving away from P&P!
I have a coupon for a free game rental, and I just may use it to give Fallout 3 a try on my PS3. I've never played a Bethesda game on a console before, so there is a dual risk involved, making this a good time to try before I buy. Despite the fact that the PC version is both cheaper and technically superior, I have a feeling I'll be more forgiving of the game's limitations when playing on a console. That and the interface will be less likely to drive me mad. |

So I just saw the IGN thing. Is it confirmed that this bug is actually present in the shipped game, or is everyone flipping out over IGN covering their asses?

It doesn't seem to be mentioned on the crash Wiki. So doesn't it sort of make sense that they would take "the game crashes when your friends sign on" out of the review?
Sometimes I'm amazed at how quickly people are to jump on the anti-corporate bandwagon. Not that I'm defending IGN as an institution, but they're usually more reliable than the average internet troll.

Dehumanizing the enemy is a necessary first step.
Any college educated person should be familiar with the concept.
Those EEEEVVVIIIILLLLL!
B E T H E S D A !!!!
sub-humans!!
If they were "real" Fallout Fans, and not subhumans they would have made the game RIGHT!
Yeah!
They would have made it in the correct way
So complicated and difficult that only the enhanced 12-year olds of our rose-glass memory could cope with it. _________________ I felt sheer anarchic joy when I ran over my first pedestrian. |

Exactly. And that's why I get especially disappointed when they're more reliable than the rest of the internet.

Never played fallout (don't dig RPGs or turnbased stuff) but am digging looking at some of the movies and checking out the scenario w/ wikipedia.
that 40s/50s retro thing -- did Bioshock steal that wholesale, or what? _________________ =/ \(<D)_/

kirkjerk, you should still try the first one at the least. It's not particularly long either.
BioShock did a piss-poor imitation of it. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

I keep getting lost. I'm a few blocks away from the Washington Monument, and I can't find a way to get there. Very frustrating. I'm following the waypoints, but I keep running into giant heaps of rubble that block my path. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. We shall depart. |

Hah, I love this game so far. I wish I could use AP to, say, run faster or something though.
I know this is going to sound really lame of me, but I love the variety of armour available to me. I keep changing clothes every time I zone... something about going into a shootout in prewar business attire, sunglasses and a fedora makes me happy inside.
Also what's with the poor, poor weapon balance? I think there's a mod already that fixes it but damnit, the Chinese C96 was usually .45 or .50 and it really shouldn't be the worst pistol in the game. It's funny how there's such great variety in armour, but zilch as far as your weapons go, in terms of equality. Your only worthwhile pistols are like... 10mm and laser. The .32 and chinese pistols? Vendor trash. _________________

yeah bioshock's cutesy flourishes had a fallouty feel sometimes.
anyone else get the feeling liam neeson is doing an impression of jonas venture sr. in the intro segments?
anyway, it's better than the preview videos let on, for sure. and mudcrablarks can go to hell. _________________

I did kind of get the Venture vibe, especially since his assistant is named Jonas.
And now he's fucked off into the wasteland, apparently with nothing but moxy and SCIENCE!
I blew a ghoul's eyeballs out today. I'm hoping, eventually, I'll get the "kibbles and bits" torso overkill from the original games, just for gore's sake. _________________

Ah hell, I think I'm almost done. I started today thinking I had neglected the main quest for too long, so I started back on the trail of Liam. Cut to a few hours later, and it looks like I'm right at the end of the story. I wonder if I can keep playing after completing it. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. We shall depart. |

I had to do it at one point whenever I backed myself into a corner and started to run out of ammo. The first one in pursuit turned and went apeshit on the other one, which is about the only thing that saved me. Considering there is no penalty for death it wasn't a huge deal, though I might've played for a while since my last save.. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. We shall depart. |

The combat shotgun is awesome. I didn't get it until a bit later than you, though. I was relying on a pistol and Chinese assault rifle.
I've done some terrible, terrible things - wiped out entire areas. Someone sasses me, THE TOWN PAYS FOR IT.
The quest variation is pretty cool. My friend is a suave scientist and I'm an amoral dude with a lot of guns and a penchant for helping those dying for some purified water, and there is a quest for the main story where we had completely different endings. He enjoyed his, but mine was awesome. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. We shall depart. |

I started out small guns/stealth/speech with my protagonista, but have since evolved into some sort of lock-cracking, computer-hacking laser fetishist.
I do still resort to the combat shotgun a lot, though. Got my first one - along with my first laser weapons - at the Super Duper Mart very, very early. Aside from it and my pew pew beams, I don't really use other weapons and should probably hawk them all off for the storage savings.
(I'm dumping them in my Megaton Love Shack, I think.) _________________

I use the hunting rifle 80% of the time, the rest being a mixture of combat shotgun, Chinese assault rifle, and sniper rifle. I have a few perks that go towards rifles, so I'm doing pretty good with those. I have maxed out small guns, so I tend to headshot everything before it gets too close. For a while there I was Warhammering it out with my pistol and this chainsaw blade deal, blasting away and then rushing in to cut them up. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. We shall depart. |

as an aside, one of the most interesting and yet most bizarre parts of the fallout mythosphere/back story is the whole thing about the vaults being a grand illuminati-esque experiment in cruelly-applied anthropology. _________________
