i had a conversation during the wedding i was at last week (woo!) about like, life and shit after the wedding because it was all rollergirls and these weird guys from western pennsylvania and apparently i'm "an optimist" because "i never worked retail."

perhaps this is true. i don't know, having never worked in retail. i went straight from manual labor to offices. admittedly we'd all been drinking but i think about some of the less optimistic people i know and bingo toodly, they all worked in retail. well actually that's not entirely true, i know a very pessimistic person who always worked in creative fields.

some brief thoughts on suits - names really do matter, tailoring is a must and syms is the place to hit if you're in the city. i paid 250 bucks for a simple black ralph lauren suit (52 tall jacket) and maybe another 30 total for tailoring. even a hugo boss suit in that size was only 400 bucks, which is incredibly cheap. i know someone in the wedding party who got a similar hugo boss suit for nearly 1000 from a department store.

Nader frames it in a bitter way

grouchy old man

Didn't his own foundation try to get rid of him?

Of course, idiots can't read. or won't.

He didn't actually call Obama Uncle Tom.

I think the point of this video is that Fox News have no fucking dignity, let alone any real allegiance, and no one should listen to them, ever.

I've bought plenty of shit from SYMS in the past. I'll get my next suit there, probably, though I was there looking for a sport coat recently and couldn't find anything I liked.

Having a hard time working myself up over that.

Although I did lock down a hotel and kill all but one - she seemed to have vanished - with my trusty pistol and flamer. Look at me like that, will you!

for some the ability to shoot digital children is their rosebud.

though i suppose we should only worry if they start putting on operas starring the untalented.

huh.

i'm sitting on a backlog of games i cannot touch or just got stuck on. world of goo...stuck on level 3. mask of the betrayer, same story. (i really suck at dnd games)

i should start another clear sky game as it now works, but i don't have it in me. same with far cry 2.

and yet i'm seriously considering picking up fallout 3 simply because everyone else says the ugly aspects are worth getting past.

protip of protips: if you're involved in a pre-tax investment instrument like a 401k, and in particular you receive matching funds, i realize you've probably gotten pounded over the last few months/year. sure, it sucks, i guess.

however - and i've heard this fucking twice now - do not say "it'd be better off in a mattress" because that is stupid and proves you can't even do basic math with a calculator.

mattresses do not lower your tax bill.
mattresses do not receive matching funds.
mattresses are not subject to a variety of strategies beyond "do not set on fire".
mattresses are not LONG TERM INVESTMENT VEHICLES YOU FUCKING IDIOTS!

yes yes you've seen some losses. you have 30+ years to recover from it.

durr durr durr

yeah my gun nut friends are complaining about both high ammunition prices and racism from the older folks resulting from this. it's not entirely unwarranted, especially in the reclassification of certain guns that may follow (making them either astronomically expensive or extremely hard to get, or both), but it's definitely driven by paranoia as well.

Quote:
Back in the '70s, conservative intellectuals loved to talk about "radical chic," the well-known tendency of educated, often wealthy liberals to project their political fantasies onto brutal revolutionaries and street thugs, and romanticize their "struggles." But "populist chic" is just the inversion of "radical chic," and is no less absurd, comical or ominous. Traditional conservatives were always suspicious of populism, and they were right to be. They saw elites as a fact of political life, even of democratic life. What matters in democracy is that those elites acquire their positions through talent and experience, and that they be educated to serve the public good. But it also matters that they own up to their elite status and defend the need for elites. They must be friends of democracy while protecting it, and themselves, from the leveling and vulgarization all democracy tends toward.

that's the bingo graf.

President-elect Barack Obama’s administration staffing questionnaire:

“(59) Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun? If so, provide complete ownership and registration information. Has the registration ever lapsed? Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage.”

i know the nra needs evil to stay in ducats, but gun control is losing ground in america. it may take a few more years and a few more heller-esque decisions, but it ain't the 1980s anymore. that part of the kultur war, like the perfidy of homosexuals, was decided a long time ago.

Was Your Education Worth It?

Where =number of years in your higher education

Where =school debt on a scale of 1 to 10
(1 being one last payment and it's all paid off and 10 being I can't believe I owe $10,000 for my art degree)

Where =job unhappiness on a scale of 1 to 10
(1 being I wish I didn't have a family so I could dedicate all my time to my job and 10 being I hate waking up because I know work is waiting)

Where =necessary diploma on a scale of 1 to 10
(1 being my political science degree has really helped me with my trash collecting and 10 being why won't they let me cut people open without a medical degree)

Where =the number of lifetime relations on a scale of 1 to 10
(1 being I was a science major with a cool chemistry kit and 10 being I was in a sorority/fraternity)

Where =environmental maturity on a scale of 1 to 10
(1 being your mom still helps pay the bills and 10 being you pay her bills)

If is=1 or greater, then congratulations, your education was worth it.

that's an interesting start, though it leaves out things like future potential (which could be split into, say, earning potential and "other" - a nebulous category that could include opening future paths for longer term studies, future careers, etc) as well as perhaps a variable for cultural prestige/power as it relates to the degree-conferring institution.

i designed my life around being debt-free, and all else flows from that.

yeah, i've seen that around. i've been progressively less amused by the whole "picking on an unrelated third party because i didn't pay my bills" folks since i heard chocolate jesus and captain foreverwar both promise to make sure no homeowners ever lost value, like, ever. that's when i knew i was totally fucked, and stupid for even bothering with my zero-debt lifestyle.

on the other hand i look forward to some really great deals on secondhand consumer electronics and music gear in q3 and q4 2009.

Is the matter of being taxed in your home state new? For years my relatives who won big gambling filed New Jersey returns for their Atlantic City vacations.

not at all. it's this:

Quote:
Denmark's tax agency is called SKAT. Denmark, like the United States, does tax gambling winnings. For casino gambling (which is where I believe this will be classified) the tax rate is 45% on the first 4 million Danish Kroners; it's 75% on income above that. Today $1 is worth 5.88907 DKK; Mr. Eastgate won 53,899,250.70 DKK before taxes. Mr. Eastgate will owe about 39,224,438 DKK in tax ($6,660,545). Put another way Mr. Eastgate will keep 14,674,813 DKK ($2,491,871) of his winnings—just 27.23% of his prize. Yes, he faces an effective tax rate of 72.77%. Ouch.
