naming your virtual porno-surrealist 2nd life thingy "soma-" anything is very early neal stephensony, perhaps even william gibsonish. (yes yes i know soma means body but still)

anyway, the effect extends far beyond pornography, though porn is the most dramatic (or at least salacious) example of the body being completely hypnotized by an unreal image. hello kitty comes to mind as well, invoking a very strong, ingrained sense of "cuteness" yet no more real than any other manipulative effect.

does this mean games are like a pornography...for the soul?

a secondary layer of abstraction?

a testament to the invasive and pervasive hypnotism of male sexual energy?

dessicated rubber duckies in the bucket of maya?

amazing and hypnotic in its restraint: (no not that kind of restraint)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAokUZS4ISM&NR=1

Didn't researchers also come up with some kind of fake fish that was sexier to male fish of the same type than any real fish could, be isolating the very few characteristics the male fish were actually looking for? I always want to find a reference to that.

you have to imagine my raising an angry ham fist at the sky and screaming "animeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!" when i see stuff like that.

one unifying theme of a lot of animal research is that male sex drives in higher animals are rather single-minded, especially if you monkey with early imprinting. (i.e. the old goose and tennis ball routine)

Has that author even jerked off to a pair of viritual tits?

I mean how do you write a 3 page article which amounts to what everyone already knew "we're still animals".

It was a trick question, he has and refuses to admit it even though it would improve the quality of his article. Any one with a bit of brains and a lack of shame can realize that there is very little difference to your average jerker between Jenna Haze and Lara Croft. Though these guys get paid per word, and the escapist needs to have other content on it, otherwise Yhatzee might realize he can get t-shirt sales ALL ON HIS OWN.

i wonder what the american market ratio of live performer vs. virtual/cartoon pornography is.

or for the world, for that matter.

Aren't the live performers acting as virtual/cartoons?

in one sense, yeah. or at the very least they are "representations of unreality."

on the other hand, flesh is flesh and though we're dealing with at least two layers of mediation (camera -- the put on) and perhaps three if you want to count the tv/vcr/dvd/internet connection, there's yet another layer of abstraction when it comes to the truly unreal rather than the somewhat unreal.

of course what this makes a strip club in the porny version of second life mentioned in the article is up for some of our media studies stalwarts to dissect, i suppose.

Shitm if it weren't for Yahtzee, that place wouldn't have an audience. Now though, they can get away with writing bullshit because fanboys will agree with them no matter what.

Business as usual.

on the other hand it's the only major outlet that writes things like this (or "major" if you prefer) even if it tends to be rather lukewarm and flat in execution. partially because they're adopting a newsweek style generalist approach that tends to play around in the gee whizz sandbox.

also the seemingly dozens of "how can i make my girlfriend like what i like?" articles are fucking creepy.

But how can you make your girlfriend like cutting off strips of her own flesh to roast and eat?

i would think you'd have to make her really fat first, no?

so the answer is complex carbohydrates. and video games.

A little while back, I found an OfflineList (basically a database of known ROM dumps, complete with screenshot download function) dat file for the PC-98 (which, for those who haven't heard, was basically the dominant computer platform in Japan during the late 80s and early 90s). I downloaded the screens, but reluctantly, because the PC-98 was where the entire hentai game genre took off.

The very first game in the list, 101 Kaime no Approach Shot, is a hentai golf game (insofar as you apparently get to see hentai for playing golf).

(naturally, the second game listed seems to involve chasing a woman and having sex with her afterwards, although the sex seems to be enjoyable for her whether it's forced or consensual)
