Topic.
I like random Queen, yet have never sat down and listened to a full album before. _________________

A Day At The Races is probably the most fun and accessible (and my personal favorite) followed by The Game.
My friend Zoey is stalwart in her assertion that Jazz is the best though. _________________ Signature:

Is it not ok to just recommend a greatest hits album?
Which album has Bicycle Race on it? I say get that one. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Greatest Hits albums are evil.
"A Day at the Races" makes me think of the Marx Bros. I'll start there.

I'd say you buy Greatest Hits 1, and then probably when you're in the market for another follow that up with Greatest Hits 2.Then maybe see about exploring the rest of their catalogue in due fashion. Greatest Hits 3 is a good place to start.
I knew a kid in highschool whose parents died and left him an inheritance. He bought Queen's Greatest Hits 1, 2 and 3 twice over, once for his car and once for his house. |

Greatest Hits 1 and 2. Straight up.
Just go out and get them both right now. Or stay in and download them both. Whichever. |

See, the problem with greatest hits albums is they lack context -- which is what I need to understand something. And that's what I'm looking to do here.
They're fine if you already know the material, and you just want to relive a highlights reel. _________________

And then if you want to hear the Queen-est band of today, go for some My Chemical Romance. Cheerfully absurd, inanely passionate, big and fun, listens like a parody but somehow isn't. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

I'm not! They're really a lot of fun. Nothing to take seriously, but Queen's the same way. And the line, "Teenagers scare the living shit out of me" is spot-on funny. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

I've previously compared Ween to Queen, though only loosely. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Have you started this yet? I currently listening to A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races back to back and I can't recommend either of them highly enough.
Greatest hits Queen just gets the bombast- it misses the silly little bits, which are nearly half the fun of their music. _________________ "Worlds turn the new machine to thee. To thee. Though, thine the new machine space."

Just after I asked this, uTorrent started to act retarded on me. The new version keeps giving me memory errors. I may just buy the darned thing, next time I need shipping saver padding on Amazon. _________________

I feel the same way about greatest hits albums, and wonder what you think of concerts? In both the band plays their hits, outside their original context. But it's the artist who decides the concert set list, giving it a brand new context. Do they put their fast songs in the first half and their slow songs in the second, or alternate every other song? Do they start with new songs, or play in chronological order? I love this shit.
Most greatest hits albums are ordered by somebody other than the artist, in order to "give you an overview." Overviews are boring, and they make the musician seem boring too. A CD needs to tell me a story, or put me in a mindstate that's worth paying 15 bucks for. |

Concerts are all about recontextualizing in the moment, yeah. It's basically theater; no two performances will be the same, and half the point is in seeing how things differ in a real, relatively messy environment from a controlled, ideal one.
I see absolutely no point to "live" albums, though -- except perhaps as an archive, for posterity. You might as well point a camera at a stage and call it a movie. Which... is kind of the way most movies were for the first few decades. And that's kind of the way most recorded music was up until Spector, Wilson, et al.
You can relate this to videogames and board/p&p games, if you wanna. _________________
