Neither did I; I only realised how silly some of it is when I recently tried to replay it.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe a leap of logic can come as a bit of a delight sometimes. When I first played it I thought it was pretty cool! Wow a monkey used a a monkeywrench! It seemed sort of anarchic and irreverent. It's only my critical, grown-up self that thinks OH HOW SILLY. I don't know how I'd react to it if i was playing it fresh today. I probably would like it!

oh yeah sorry I forgot my opinion was manufactured to make myself stand out, i actually LOVE how horrendously divorced from real-world logic Monkey Island 2 is, i'm sorry i guess i shouldn't care so much about how people i don't even know perceive me

I might try again on easy mode now that I know how stupid the normal mode is. The overall atmosphere and sense of humor are charming enough to be worth it, as per usual Monkey Island standards.

Don't pay any attention to Harvey, he listens to Prince and sometimes the artist formerly known as.

Continuing my Batman Gaming Binge, I installed The Adventures of Fatman: Toxic Revenge: Special Collector's Edition. It's probably most well known for being the first commercial AGS game, later released as freeware, then re-released as a special edition later to fund the upcoming sequel.

It's pretty entertaining! It's very much a traditional adventure with all the crap that comes with them, but it has a lot of heart. It's about a once great hero who has become complacent and a bit bored now that he's wiped out all the crime... but a new villian is about to rise! Fatman actually does a surprising amount of detective work, but naturally most of the game is spent getting around obstacles impeding your investigation. For example, the first quarter or so of the game is spent trying to get around a cop so you can collect your first piece of evidence. Despite this, it's a fun romp with entertaining characters and mostly good puzzles, apart from three or four really stupid ones. Luckily, easy mode not only lets you instantly respawn after deaths, but will also drop hints when you get stuck for too long. Oh, it's also full of comic references so that's cool, too. So yes, was a fun way to spend a Tuesday night, but nothing spectacular. Hope the sequel is good!

There was a Batman adeventure game for the ZX Spectrum you might want to check out. It was pretty cool! It had The Penguin Plot on one side of the tape and The Joker Plot on the other side. NEAT. I could never get very far with it, though.

You know what movie would make the perfect translation to an adventure game? Dude, Where's my Car!

Think about it! You have a hangover and can't remember anything about the previous night, the only thing that's clear is that your car is missing. The goal of the game is obvious; locate your car! Starting with a clue in their house, the player slowly retraces their steps and eventually locates their car (or saves the earth from aliens, whatever) while encountering the same WILD AND WACKY cast of characters from the movie, who would fit right in among other adventure game npcs.

It would totally get made if the movie was released in the early 90s.

80s maybe. 90s it would run the risk of being made into a largely tangential platformer, a la Rocketman, Wayne's World, etc.

Man, if only Capstone was still around. They would have been all OVER that.

Oh man oh man just imagine "DUDE!" and "SWEET!' coming randomly out of your speakers whenever a character says it

(crosspost)

Hal Barwood (Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis) and Noah Falstein (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) team up to make what looks like the next Awesome Adventure Game. It's really hot. And froth-worthy.

dessgeega already found time to badmouth it though Sad

hey, i WANT it to be good. just, you know, adventure games are the videogames that most often get videogames wrong. i would love to have another good one, but the tropes of the genre run in a contrary direction to compelling game design, and those people have stood waist-deep in those tropes. it would be easy to make this be just another adventure game, far harder to make it something worth playing.

i hope it will be the latter.

I don't know if I completely agree with that. I think they can be stilted, and yes, do fall into some pretty frustrating non-compelling design sometimes, but I've realised as time goes on that the only kind of game that will have any hope of legitimising the medium for myself will necessarily utilise an adventure game framework--however loosely. It is one of the only kinds of games that doesn't rely on some asinine variation of Robotron (though it isn't a one-way street to be sure; since the only viable mechanic in this framework is puzzles, there is the tradeoff of potentially arbitrary and unintuitive solutions).

And if you think about it, purely in terms of narrative, they are the only games involved in storytelling that isn't some typical geek fantasy of dragons/guns--mostly because their framework gives them the leeway to do so.
