Ok, I've been ignoring this thread to avoid spoilers because I've been so far behind. I'm now caught up and all I can say is man the last four episodes have been AMAZING. Exceptional. Especially considering that I wasn't digging the season as much up till now.
Anyways, I also happen to see this:
aderack wrote: | So current word is that Paul Cornell (pal of Moffat), Neil Gaiman (pal of Cornell; recently had lunch with Moffat; is going out of his way to avoid confirming or denying the suggestion), and Rob Shearman ("Dalek", Scherzo) are all in the tentative jar for series five.
To which I declare a tentative holy shit.. |
Jesus shit in a handbasket that's... I really don't have words for how brilliant that COULD be. Scherzo is the second best episode from all the audio's I've heard (which would be most of the Mcgann stuff). Gaiman, well, that's more of me being a huge fan of both Sandman and Neverwhere.
Aderack, have you seen Neverwhere? You must if not. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

I've not seen Neverwhere. I really like Gaiman's voice; just reading a few of his random paragraphs about nothing can give me great pleasure. I'm not really sold on his storytelling, though. If he can match that style and flair with a succinct and fresh narrative, he'll be on top of the world.
His authorial tone reminds me a lot of Seamus Heany's translation of Beowulf.
This season... it's not been bad, really. It just has been pretty flat until recently. I think before Midnight the most interesting episodes were the first two, Partner in Crime and the Pompeii thing. And those weren't perfect either. They were, however, different and engaging. The former is about the funniest the show has ever been, and the latter is just packed with so many ideas, presented so earnestly...
I've convinced myself that Midnight has got to be the single best script for this show, ever. And the performances are pretty great, too. The woman who played Skye, the repeating woman... Good Lord. _________________

I'm not quite sure if I'm happier with what we ended up with instead. I'm going to reserve judgment on the Supreme Dalek business until the next part, where it will hopefully be explained a bit. The Harriet Jones business was...odd.
Tangentially, I just discovered that the former Outpost Gallifrey forums no longer require a non-free email address for registration! That was always what kept me from registering there, seeing as I am a lowly teenager who does not pay for his own internet. |

The last four years were foreplay, and this is the orgasm.
So many grace notes, played so well -- who knows who, who's seen what -- with such gleeful payoffs. The episode is probably pretty unforgiving to people who haven't watched the spinoffs, but who cares. On a similar "but who cares" note: the logic was a bit dodgy on the super-phone call bit but in this case I'll happily allow story and pacing to trump technobabble. |

Aside from torrents and rapidshares and youtube, you can go to the BBC site, and... click "play". If you use a proxy.

They didn't say it, that I noticed, but it seems like that was enhanced by the Archangel network. There was the characteristic bee-bee-bee-beep, bee-bee-bee-beep. So it was basically an overt redo of the clap-if-you-believe-in-time-lords thing from last year, except less dumb.
And hell, it's awesome to see Mr. Smith and the Rift Manipulator networked like that. Whoever built that statue must be pretty thrilled with its visibility...
Rose's reaction to Martha is lovely. So many almost invisible references, like Martha again having to be told over and over to look out the window, instead of just doing it.
You all notice that honkin' establishing shot of the hand, at the start?
This is so cleverly assembled, and so well-paced. This could have been such a clusterfuck, but it's all so organized and elegant and effortlessly dynamic. It feels determined. That's what it feels like. _________________

Some odd Donna stuff. There's definitely something going on there. People are going crazy, some saying she's the Master, that she's the Rani, that she's the Doctor, etc. Fandom can be hilarious.
Interesting (though reaching a bit) nonsense here, nontheless -
Donna (Italian) = woman, lady
Noble = lord
Donna is a temp. Latin tempus = time.
Oh dear, now I'm falling into the clutches of foolishness.
And here, new trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWos8c6usxQ Some interesting little shots in there, including Donna flailing around inside what looks like the TARDIS filled with flames. The most faithful companion, I assume?
I like the plinky Davros music.

Yeah, that's what I was going to say. What more faithful companion has the Doctor ever had?
That link is down now. I assume it's today's trailer? Here's another one!

Man, yeah. I've never seen a man so deranged. I kept rewinding that moment.
...
And then I saw this trailer. Looks like Davros is truly at the end of his rope now.
Davies brought up an interesting point in the Confidential. (It's worth watching, this week.) Unlike most of the other returning characters and monsters, Davros -- though played by four different actors -- is meant to be the same exact man who has appeared since Genesis of the Daleks. The Master, and the Doctor you can regenerate and reinvent. The Daleks and Cybermen, you can futz with at will. Really, this is the single biggest piece of character continuity there's been from the classic series.
Sarah Jane... well. She's kind of different character now also. She's also only one season older than Davros. _________________

Meanwhile, I've been amusing myself by rewinding the trailer so that Davros keeps saying "THIS!" and shaking his finger over and over. It looks like he's doing some kind of dance.
And on Davros, yeah. Hence why he seems so utterly deranged now. His speech in that trailer is almost spine-chilling in its lack of...well, sanity. He has, as you said, reached the end of his rope. The Confidential was quite good, too! I was pleased to see McCoy and Davison in there.

It could very well be Donna but I'm not ready to commit to that. We have 4 companions available! It can't be Sarah Jane because, well, she has her own series to get back to. Martha doesn't quite carry the weight of the other two. I see no reason why it wouldn't be Rose, either.
Donna has SOMETHING very special about her, and SOMETHING very tragic in her future. But...
Question Mark! |

Watched the Confidential. Laughed at "I've got you under my skin".
Also: Noel Clarke is visible in a clip from the script read-through so it should be no surprise (not that it would have been anyway) when he shows up next week. He's probably on the other end of the Rose's phone, managing her teleports. |

No. Though Rowan Atkinson's appearance was written by Steven Moffat. Both he and Richard E. Grant are just alternate Ecclestons.
Cushing was the misunderstood big-screen Hartnell.
Why do you ask? Did you see this somewhere? Did I post it somewhere? I don't remember things. _________________

For me? Where?
Eric-Jon, are we allowed to use this thread to speculate on who the next doctor might be? I will keep this stuff in white text until someone says it's ok not to.
Here are my speculations:
Dawn French
Paul Daniels
Prince
James Nesbitt
Alan Moore
Actually I really like that last idea. |

I was intrigued by that at first, but remember that McCoy has a reputation for being well-dressed, and he made an appearance later that day in that outfit (http://i31.tinypic.com/k37msi.jpg). Still could be something, though!
And, uh, we are almost definitely not getting a new Doctor, correct? Considering that Tennant has already filmed/is filming (is filming done yet?) the Christmas Special and has recently signed on for series five.
I found this amusing.
Wow, the former OG forums are terrible. I've already blocked someone simply because they seemed to be posting in every thread that I had any interest in and made no effort to be comprehensible or intelligent. This is the first time I've blocked anyone on any board! |

Yes, true. And the Seventh Doctor's hat was McCoy's own, even. Still it is rather curious, isn't it.
Totally. Well, almost totally. He's shot the Christmas special, is signed for the four specials next year (one or more of which will have Simm, one of which will apparently actually feature McGann... according to Graeme "Butter Tongue" Harper), and is... very probably doing series five. Not technically signed yet, though he might as well be. I've even heard he's informally agreed to do three more series with Moffat. Which would be kind of whoa, and would bring him neck and neck with Tom Baker.
Yeah, OG is kind of the Neo GAF of... television forums in general. Once you block, you can't stop.
Mind, the ignore list has a limit of 1000 names. So be judicial.
Oh, incidentally, R1 DVDs are almost caught up with R2. This box art was even presented before the R2 equivalent. _________________

So okay, here's how the specials are looking, right now.
Christmas '08: Cybermen
Easter '09: Sea Devils
Christmas/Boxing Day '09; New Year's: Huge epic thing with the Master, Paul McGann, Time Lords, the Time War, and everything.
And apparently the Brig is turning up in SJA. _________________

It's actually three specials, over the 2009 Christmas week. Christmas, day after, and New Year's. Which... uh. Even if they're only an hour each, that's quite a lot of room to tell a big story.
As for content, I say "apparently" as the guy is extrapolating a bit based on some details (in particular, the presence of Simm and McGann), though he's pretty confident in his conclusions. I think I've mentioned him before; he's a fellow on Roobarb's who is oddly clued-in about things. I don't know what his connection is to the production team, but clearly he's pretty inside the loop.
He mentioned what was going on with Torchwood 3 (five hour-long specials over a week, with Mickey and Martha) months back. I think around January or February. It was only announced a couple of weeks ago. He outlined what was going on with Moffat taking over from Davies (including a lot of specific details) some while before that was made public.
Months ago, he mentioned that the fellow who played Mr Copper in Voyage of the Damned was meant to turn up again in last week's episode, except he was so abrasive that Davies wrote him out and replaced him with Harriet Jones. And lo, there's Harriet Jones teleprompting about a "Mr. Copper foundation". Though honestly, I don't know why Davies wouldn't have used her to start with; it provides such nice circularity to Tennant's era, his first big decision come back to haunt him...
Oh, also months back he talked about Graeme Harper blabbing that the finale would have Daleks and Davros, would be the most "bonkers" thing he'd ever done, and that there would be a failed regeneration in it. Seems Harper's lips sink a lot of ships, especially when lubricated. Last year, for instance, Harper was the first person to mention that the Master was in the show, and was played by John Simm.
So. From what I gather, the guy was in a bar with Harper a while back, and Harper mentioned the McGann business. Considering the guy's record so far, and Harper's modus operandi, I'm inclined to take it at face value.
EDIT: Quote: | 6 months out from filming even starting I'd say there's a 75% chance of The Sea Devils coming back - that is not speculation BTW.
What is speculation is the timing, but Easter sounds the most logical to me. With a massive fanwank, lunatic final Russilon finale over Christmas/New Year with The Time War/The Time Lords/The Master and Uncle Thomas Cobley. |
I'm guessing the 75%/no speculation business is allowing for potential rights problems. You know how it is, with the original writers rather than the BBC owning the content of their scripts. _________________

It's not high art by any means. Still, of Colin Baker's two seasons, I think this one is a lot more tolerable. They seem to have gotten the performances and the relationships and the tone down. Also, that umbrella almost justifies his outfit...
The Mysterious Planet and Vervoids are unobjectionable, if unremarkable, stories, buoyed by the relief of seeing Colin Baker working properly in the role. (The former is also, possibly, referenced in last week's episode.) Mindwarp is kind of icky. It's written by the same guy as Vengeance on Varos, and is sort of a sequel. And once again, he's doing the tortuous deformation thing on Peri. He later did an Eighth Doctor audio where he pulled the same stunt on Charlie. The enemies in that story were once again slimy, gurgling creatures. I don't know what his problem is.
The Ultimate Foe... is weird and anticlimactic, yeah, and doesn't really make any sense. It's got a lot of nice beats to it, though. It makes a decent conclusion to an agreeably mediocre season.
Generally what I get out of Trial is a glimpse of how Colin Baker might have been in the role, if he hadn't been given the bum's rush. And I'm really surprised at how well Mel sets him off. She doesn't quite work with McCoy, I don't think, yet the two of them have great sparks in Vervoids. _________________

So, Sarah Jane. As suggested a while back, Maria and her family are being written out in series two. Seems the deal is, Yasmin Paige's parents want her to focus on exams so she won't be available. Thus the Cornwall reference in "The Stolen Earth", presumably.
She will appear in two episodes, though, along with the guy who plays her dad. And David Tennant will put in an appearance somewhere, too.
In the meantime, she's being replaced by a character named Rani Chandra. No telling if Yasmin Paige will be back for series three, after she's done with school. Rani is literally moving into Maria's house, though, which is suggestive.
Also, there's going to be more focus on Clyde's family. Which makes some sense, as Daniel Anthony is an adult -- so he's as free as he wants to be. It might help a bit for next year, also -- as it'll be Thomas Knight's turn with exams.
Phil Ford, he of the rather awesome wedding episode of Torchwood, is the new head writer. Looks like all of the episodes are in familiar hands:
Episodes 1/2 written by Phil Ford, directed by Joss Agnew
Episodes 3/4 written by Phil Ford, directed by Michael Kerrigan
Episodes 5/6 written by Gareth Roberts, directed by Michael Kerrigan
Episodes 7/8 written by Joseph Lidster, directed by Joss Agnew
Episodes 9/10 written by Gareth Roberts, directed by Graeme Harper
Episodes 11/12 witten by Phil Ford, directed by Graeme Harper
Story 2 deals with evil clowns. Story 3 is about some kind of mesmerist. Story 4 is heavily Clyde-centric. The finale involves the Sontarans and, apparently, the Brig. The readthrough was this week, so there's not much doubt about Nick Courtney's involvement.
Curious about the Lidster episode...
Michael Kerrigan directed the McCoy serial Battlefield -- making him the second classic series director to graduate to the modern Whoniverse. (The other being Grame Harper, and oh look at that...) No clue about Joss Agnew. He's done some other shows, like Casualty. Means nothing to me. _________________

Maybe I'm too critical, but that wasn't very good. Especially after last week. |

Yeah, the actual events were fine, and often rather great -- but even at 65 minutes, the thing was so perfunctory. There was no time to digest anything. So it comes off not so much as drama as a math equation. This happened, check. That leads to this, check. And here's this explanation. Moving on.
I like the note it ends on.
I think this story really needed another episode. Frankly.
Again, in theory most of the stuff in this episode is pretty neat. It's just, there's no time to dwell on any of it. _________________
