Hey guys, Lestrade and I were talking and we're trying to decide if TGQ needs a game development forum - a place for people working on games or who want to work on games can go to discuss their projects. Who's for it and who's against it and why?

I am totally pro-anything that encourages people to make videogames.

I think this cast of people brings something completely worthwhile to game dev discussion, and I know I for one appreciate the opinions of the people here. I would love to discuss ideas, ask for help, etc.

Can we bug people with questions? I'm going through a C++ book now, and though I've yet to hit the complex stuff, I can see myself needing some assistance here and there. Well, maybe not too much to bug anyone since I'm going sslloowwwwwww, but I like to have my bases covered - "I warned you!!"

Sadly, my involvement with games is limited to a more auxiliary position. Currently involved with four right now. The one I'm most excited about being Mount & Blade (yesssssssss!), and I will take credit for them fixing the title from Mount&Blade.

I would imagine that's fair game. I'm a lowly artist/designer, so I can answer no programming questions (unless we're suddenly talking about websites).

I know a good bit about production process in general, with a strong focus on localization (as one might expect). But I also deal with a lot of VO folk as subcontractors and nothing but product and brand managers on a daily basis. I've also worked with brands outside of gaming, like Red Bull and Geico. Really, everything outside of programming and art: marketing rationales, box design, game design documents, website and promotional materials, in-software material, manuals, strategy guides, character bios, etc. with liberal amounts of content creation sprinkled throughout. I also hire a lot from around here (hey guys!), so I do like to poach the local talent as well.

So I went ahead and made it. WITHOUT MATT'S PERMISSION EVEN! Based on the community feedback of a total of four positive responses. Woo!

Currently I have this forum set up so that you need to be registered to read posts in it. Do we agree that this is a good idea? Should I open it up for everyone? Should I make it invisible to anyone who isn't registered?

Should I require registration to read posts or to even see that the dev forum exists?

Also, please suggest different names/descriptions for this forum if you don't like the one I came up with. I have a feeling that we already overuse the word "Quarter" around here.

Well, I guess it makes sense for people to see the forum, but not be able to read the posts. That way they have an incentive to join.

It would make more sense for people to be able to read the posts, but not reply unless they had permission. There's no reason to keep the content hidden from the general public, and if they don't know what the content is and they join and it's not what they expect, then they'll be all "Well, that was a waste!" and the whole exercise will be pointless. If however they could see what was on offer, the temptation would become more meaningful.

Jimminy crickets, I just found this.

S'funny, I was thinking about asking "could we start up a general 'games you have made thread?'" cause I thought me pimping every damn GloriousTrainwrecks Klik of the Month I made in its own thread would grow tiresome.

Also, in general it answers some questions for me about if TGQ is about The Industry or does it extend to our own efforts however humble...

Is the visibility issue in case people want to write about stuff that's a bit secret?

As for a name for the forum... I dunno, "Nickel and Dime Game Design"?

Done!

As for why make things secret, I guess it's just in case you want to work on something and reveal it to this community during the process and not have to worry about your half-finished ideas ending up posted on the front page of Kotaku. Not that this would realistically happen, but it's a worry.

I have a few videos (and even code if someone would be interested) of half-finished games I'd like to post at some point, but I don't think I'd want to do it if there's a chance it might end up public domain.

No, this totally makes sense to me. It does make a very small community even more restricting, but it also keeps people from prying into things and flat out copying and pasting your ideas without needing to give up any of their information. While it may never end up on the front page of Kotaku, you don't have to worry about some small jerk community running across it and slapping it all over their forums for slander or jest (or worse).

I like the new name but I dunno about 'so you like-a the game making? So do we!' How about just 'development forum' instead?

I chose something shitty so that someone would come up with something better. So do it! I don't like "development forum." Needs more pizzaz.

Why don't we combine the two?

"You want babies? You make 'em. (Babies are videogames)"

All this baby talk reminds me of the Nutrigrain ad that never was:

I like that.
At the risk of being too pedantic,
Video games = babies. Now we make love.

I dig how it allows for, just like the point of sex isn't just babies, sometimes game design is more about the fun of just doin' it.

I'm not going to push the metaphor further, but I love it up to here.

I like this line of thinking, but lets get less obscure with it. How about, "We know videogames are your babies, now use this forum to talk about making babies."

Wes, making love can lead to babies. I think you need to know this.

See the drama that one comma adds!
