The new NIN is pretty cash, me droogs. If I were one of those people I'd say something like this is what the second disc of The Fragile should have sounded like. The singles were misleading as to the overall ominous tone of this one.

Yeah, this is the best thing I could have woken up to. Downloading the Apple Lossless and MP3 versions right now. Did I ever pick a good time to become an audio junkie.

While I kind of agree with you here, I don't think that The Fragile [right] needs replacing. Actually from The Fragile, through Ghosts I-IV and into The Slip the music feels very cognative and well thought out. With Teeth is kind of the black sheep of the past 10 years.

But I'm not one of those people. ;(

And yeah, [With_Teeth] does feel out of place the same way Pretty Hate Machine feels out of place, but you can see how its pop-rockish elements went into elements of this album.

Also, you forgot Year Zero. ;(

Yeah, honestly I forget about Year Zero quite a bit! I've only listened to it once, so I don't talk about it much.

year zero is probably one of my favourite albums for a long time. It's been in my car cd player for most of the year.

Love is Simple (Akron/Family) has been in my car stereo since it was released, and it's probably better than Year Zero ( <--- Uneducated opinion based on similar circumstances).

I was going to buy an Akron/Family album the other day, but it was too expensive so I went for a Sigur Rós one instead. Sad

Which one of theirs would you recommend as a taster?

Love is Simple is a very good "taster" as it's kind of all over the place (in a good way). Their self titled album is very good but a bit more on their slower side, where something like Meek Warrior is much faster and more tribal.

Oh, also, a reminder that Peter Adams' new album is nearly out. You can check out his first album for (pretty much) free here: http://www.peteradamsmusic.com/orderform.html. It requires a donation of $0.01 or higher. It's worth every penny though!

Though I don't always agree with Marcello Carlin's musical taste, I can't argue with his dedication, musical knowledge and writing ability. He seems to be taking Portishead's Third track by track now, and I thought some of you folks might be interested.

After my ipod crash I've slowly been re-ripping and re-downloading stuff that is either only left in parts or missing completely. Tool was one of those bands and as of this morning I now have all of it back. While going through my albums I realized that Ćnima is now over ten years old. I couldn't believe that the auto id3 tagging was right when it said 1996 because it doesn't feel like it was released that long ago.

I feel a bit older now than I did when I woke up.

Hate to be a douche, but is there anyway to download those tracks? I'm not all that familiar with MySpace.

Time to ask for help.

So I noticed that in a few songs I've heard, I'm really impressed by Tom Waits' songwriting. I don't admire his style consistently, but I can tell by a few songs--"Anywhere I Lay My Head," for instance--that he really has something special going on. So I checked out Rain Dogs and found it, uh, mostly uninspiring. Anyone wanna tell me where I should really start with Tom Waits?

That's generally where people suggest to start with Tom Waits, so, ah, well.

I guess I would suggest Frank's Wild Years and if you like that, start working backward into his more blues-y free-jazz period. And if you don't, try Mule Variations and if you like that, check out his post-Rain Dogs output.

Really though, Rain Dogs is the canonical Waits album, so if it's not sugaring your donut, I'd give more than half a mind to shrugging and moving on.

and dhex, i was listening to that M83 the record store today. they had it up on display. it was way too much for me. it didn't seem to show much restraint.

Which is why it's good! (Actually, I'm not entirely sure what you meant, since it sounded uh, fairly conventional, I guess would be the right word?)

I admit that I was not expecting the similarities to the Psychedelic Furs.

I'm not even sure how it's a bad thing.

This makes perfect sense in light of the specific creative commons licence they're using at the moment, but I hadn't realised: Nine Inch Nails' Ghosts, all four volumes so far, are up on the Internet Archives, as is The Slip.

dhex, I'm glad you enjoyed Variations of Static, even though I find the computerised voice detracts from it enormously. Have you heard Eulogy for Evolution yet?

Quite accidentally, I found Einstürzende Neubauten's new release, The Jewels, yesterday while window-shopping (I also got a bunch of Arvo Pärt because I love the composer to death from what I've heard, and I need to hear much, much more). I had no idea they were releasing new material, let alone so soon after their last album Alles wieder offen, but it was a welcome surprise, especially considering it's a collection of their short experiments previously only available on a monthly basis to members of their online supporters project. I missed out on my chance to join that when it closed off, and couldn't find these jewels on P2P. It's a welcome addition to their catalogue, by the by, and demonstrates a lot of resourcefulness on their part, after being criticised for becoming too familiar and ego-centric. Worth getting if you were let down by their most recent albums, I'd say.

Now I just hope they start releasing their Musterhaus projects too.

Hmm. I guess my issue with it was that the sound felt needlessly big to me. Like the way Coldplay's X & Y album sounds until the thirteenth track. Or most U2.

Granted, aside from the bigness of its production, it didn't sound like either of those bands. Also, I listened to two minutes or so of each of the first four songs, so it wasn't a complete listen. Just a taste that I wasn't grooving with.

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, it would appear that Thom Yorke listened to it and came to the conclusion it wasn't good enough to be on the front page of Radiohead's website, and my remix got deleted. I can't imagine why. Sure, maybe I'm not the best musician in the world. That's debatable, I suppose. But if people voted for it, doesn't it deserve to be on the list? What's the problem? I can't imagine it has anything to do with the fact that my remix contained the phrases "I downloaded the multitracks from The Pirate Bay," "Thom Yorke can suck my dick," and "it's like trying to remix a root canal," so I'm really scratching my head here trying to think of what it could be.

Hey guys I probably have really horrible taste in music but I really like ?uestlove's new production of Pharrell William's In My Mind Album. It's called Out of My Mind! It's good!

He's really brought out the best in all the songs Pharrell wrote for that album. To call it a 'passable pastiche of Off The Wall era Michael Jackson' would be completely accurate and yet the album is SO MUCH MORE. Well not really. It's a good pastiche, though!

I must have terrible taste in music because I'm still listening to that Pharrell / Questlove album. In fact I was running out of space on my hard drive so I thought 'fuck it, this is the post-mp3 age, I'm calling it' and freed up like 30 gig just by deleting all my mp3s, most of which I can just listen to on youtube or internet radio anyway, or if I'm really desperate I can just download them again off Soulseek in less than a minute. So it's not like there's much point in hoarding all this crap if it's just going to eat up space.

Anyway, I didn't delete the Pharrell album. Huh.

Harvey, are you waiting for someone to tell you listening to that album doesn't mean you have bad taste in music?

?uestlove is a remarkable individual. Pharrell is kind of silly.

Speaking of, the more I listen to Rising Down (the Roots' latest) the more interesting it becomes. Also, living in Philly gives me a much better reference set for listening to them (in the same way that listening to Outkast, Ludicrous, T.I., Goodie Mob, Killer Mike, etc. works best when you know Atlanta's ins and outs).

Hey, Pharrell is a genius rap producer! His NERD stuff is shit, admittedly, but I suspect he just does that stuff to get white teenagers buying his music.

Also, he designed these trainers:

I also nearly bought the pink ones he designed with the teddy bears on. They were 'ill'. Also he's good at singing, writing songs, and rapping. I'm not good at any of those things! Also, sometimes I see korean kids wearing bootleg Ice Cream t-shirts. So. Stick that up your arse.

In the interest of balance, I listened to the original version of that album. It's almost hilarious how rubbish it is. You can hear the songs are in there but the production is just not up to scratch at all; it's almost like he didn't didn't have any confidence in the product he was trying to make. It's funny how bad lyrics that just seem cute in Questlove's version are hilariously awful when heard in the original.

Seems Questlove checks his youtube account a lot, so I sent him a message that I really like his album and that he should check out the music video I made 6 months back. Who knows, maybe he will like it and I will be TEH NEXT HYPE WILLIAMS

Yeah, it's also his first attempt at online-only distribution. I enjoyed it. It's perhaps a lot more ambient than most people are used to from his material, but I'd suggest it to you.

You'll also note they still have a few copies of Jesu's Pale Sketches remaining.

I also hear rumours that Jesu is going to be turning to a more electronic output - permanently. If the Envy/Jesu split is anything to go by, I could live with that.

so boris was pretty frickin' god damn good last night, even if parts of their stage show are basically whitesnake circa '88.

I've been listening to a lot of music on the road.

Bon Iver works falsetto and folk into surprisingly catchy (if delightfully puzzling) songs all over his new album For Emma, Forever Ago. Flume and Skinny Love are good stand-alones, but the album really shines as a whole.

I don't like that new Roots album very much anymore. Black Thought just bores me.

Surprise of the trip: My friend Dave brings out a cd called Mescalito by a man named Ryan Bingham. Dave is into classic rock and country. Sometimes he has good taste, somtimes he has bad taste, nearly always he has safe taste. Mescalito, though, takes chances and doesn't miss. Bingham sings with a cigarette-addled West Texas/New Mexico drawl that vouches for all the cocaine he's done before he ever mentions it. Strains of Johnny Cash and Hank Williams percolate through his blunt lyrics; "Hard Times" is both socioeconomically evocative and a heartrending portrayal of a father's legacy. [I would like to repeal the phrase "socioeconomically evocative" because it is the worst combination of words I have ever devised.] The steel guitar riff that opens "Bread and Water" rocks in ways that most steel guitar phrases have long since forgotten--it isn't just a drab attempt at false emotion, but soars beyond country music's most boringly received emotional tropes. If anyone here cares about daring songwriting that emanates from real country tradition--as opposed to the over-produced ,cliched, easy, and mostly money-driven contemporary pop-country [even though I still love listening to "Before He Cheats]--please give Ryan Bingham a real listen.

And I know there's no real reason to tell anyone here about Bob Dylan, but Freewheelin' has become one of my favorites in the last few weeks. Nothing on it quite reaches the heights of "Talkin' New York" or "Baby Let Me Follow You Down" from his eponymous album ("Corrina, Corrina" comes awfully close) but in its entirety the blistering, penetrating, and frequently hilarious scope contributes to an even more intriguing experience.

p.s. really, a lot of you ought to give Ryan Bingham a shot.

Belong have released an old tour EP from 2006 for free. If you like ambient shoegaze, give this a listen.

October Language was so good.

I've found like half-a-dozen Joy Division live bootlegs and culled the best tracks from them into a new mix that's quite nice. There's one show where their equipment all starts breaking down and it's just perfect.

French black metal band Celeste have their first album up for free. You can order the CD or LP versions of it too, or make a donation if you wish.

More Justin Broadrick chicanery:
