while i appreciate the attempts to establish libertopia (and other -topias) in a hyperconnected modern age, i'm also really afraid of drowning. the article details some of the earlier schemes along these lines (isolationist reboots of human culture) but there's a whole history of various kinds of these attempts spurred by a variety of factors - social and religious pressures or responses; socialist and other political utopic drives; to live outside of the established cultural order; or to even just mildly tweak the existing framework.

it's obviously doable but still, i am frightened.

Let's call a prequel "MuleShock" and set it at Brook Farm.

Haven't other attempts at libertopia been tried before? Haven't they failed miserably?

yes, yes they have.

BUT THIS WILL BE DIFFERENT.

actually, one of my pet things is communal arrangements outside of the boundaries of normal society. i briefly considered doing a project on it (i know some folks who know some folks who live in one in south carolina) because while i find the entire concept rather dingbatty, i find it's execution very interesting. and the day-to-day challenges of dealing with human nature fighting political utopianism of one stripe or another quite fascinating.

yeah, i forgot about those guys! no small wonder why.

on the other hand i've always said there's going to be a lot of weird outgrowths from the ron paul thing, and so far as that's an obvious bet that even dead people couldn't lose, i've been right.
