I wonder what the difference between Vegemite and Marmite is, though; I could have sworn I've seen jars of Marmite on store shelves here a few times. So what's the deal with folate anyways?

Tomatoes were banned for a long time because of their relation to nightshade. I don't think that stopped anyone though.

Mmm, vegemite is damn tasty! I just had a huge piece of bread with vege for breakfast. Delicious! It's awesome too, because I've never met anyone from any other country who doesn't absolutely hate the taste. It's like the entire world is allied in its hatred of vegemite. I've given samples to Germans, Japanese and Britons, and they've either politely and excruciatingly slowly finished just that piece, or just outright and immediately refused to ever touch the stuff again. Australian taste for the win!

But yeah, that ban sounds pretty crazy..

Laco's right on the money. I've yet to meet anyone from outside this wide brown land who hasn't threatened to physically violate me if I feed them move vegemite, yet I gobble the stuff like it was candy.

I'm from Britain and I like Vegemite. It was sold on the store shelves here for a very brief period of time, but I guess the British public never.warmed to it.

Nope. Plain old V8; I noticed it a year or two ago (they'd also placed a Campbell's logo more prominently on the bottle, so I assumed it was a new acquisition/corporate rebranding). I can't actually remember if it was real sugar or high fructose corn syrup. I don't know how long it lasted, but I'm assuming the V8 market tends to be a vocal one, so they probably fixed things quickly.

Hey, so like, I finally ran across a very small (4.4oz) of Marmite! I'm excited, but how should I eat it? This is one of the most polarized food I know of and have been intrigued on what it tastes like for a long time.

EDIT: Also, Wikipedia says that this thread was based on lies!

On hot buttered toast. Then spread marmite on it. Start with just a small amount. Then add more and more as you go on.

If you don't like it at first, stick with it! A lot of people don't like olives the first time they have them, either! Also, coriander.

Marmite is the pasty red-headed cousin of Vegemite - more savoury and without the ball-punching bitterness. I wouldn't exercise as much caution as a Vegemite jar requires, but that's not to say you should dive in headfirst. I would suggest you acclimatise yourself to the taste by toasting some white bread, melting some butter/margarine into it, and then spreading a thin layer of Marmite over the top.

I've heard stories of some who melt it into boiling water and enjoy a delicious cup of the stuff, but frankly those people are batshit crazy.

We have something over here called 'Bovril' with is basically Marmite made with beef instead of yeast, and they advertise that as being for drinking. Delicious on toast, too!

Ok, I tried it by taking 1 piece of bread, toasting it lightly, applying butter, then a thin layer of Marmite, and finally folding it in half (vertically).

It wasn't bad. It was kind of like eating a soy sauce butter sandwich. There where a couple of spots of intense salt that was nearly overwhelming. I'm not really sure if it was good or not. I'll have to try more I guess.
