http://starmen.net/ebsiege/japan/

The Starmen.net community made a package of gifts to send to Itoi, Iwata, Miyamoto, and other people directly involved in Earthbound. It's such a beautiful and professionally made package they've produced, and the boxes they've sent them in look exactly like the ones you find in the games!

Inside the boxes are resin figurines, two books translated into Japanese ('Thank Itoi' and 'Earthbound Anthology'), a fan music CD and a fan video DVD. Earthbound Anthology chronicles the dedication of Earthbound fans over the years, and 'discusses the future of the series outside of Japan'.

While the Japanese mailout is planned as a thank-you, there will also be a US-side assault designed to raise awareness of the level of enthusiasm that exists for a wider release of Mother 3.

I love Earthbounders.

P.S.

CATTLESNAKE

That is so clever. Itoi is a genius.

I've long contended that Earthbound fans are just bizzaro-world Fallout fans.

I still wouldn't want to get on their bad side, though. They've got baseball bats and yo-yos!

Yeah, I couldn't imagine this thread getting invaded by psychos and becoming NSFW.

This is like the antithesis of that thread. We should fill it just with nice things, like pictures of us eating our favorite foods and stuff .

NSFW?

I guess all that stuff got edited out of the FO thread.

Never saw any of it myself.

It changed so quickly it was hard to keep up.

At least it was contained to just that thread.

(Aside from the spy left behind to monitor for future heresy.)

Man, I remember the first time I finished Earthbound! I didn't even know anything about the game, either. I holed myself up in my room at university for days to play it. I'd go to lectures in the morning and then go straight back to my room to play Earthbound before lunch. Then lunch, then lectures, then more Earthbound. A couple of days later I finally emerged, bleary-eyed and unable to talk about anything else.

It's funny, I'm sure that for the most part I was just buoyed along by the sheer charm, quirkiness and style of the game. It wasn't until I met Poo and was like 'whoa, this Nintendo game just explained the buddhist concept of Nirvana to me in extremely lucid and relatable terms' that I realised that some deep shit was afoot. By the time I reached Magicant I think my mind was completely blown. I was so receptive to whatever high-concept shit the game could throw at me by that point that I actually went as far as to think that Magicant was the end of the game- you just wander this dreamland forever and never get out.

I started trying to play Mother 3 with a translation guide. I can't do it, because it tells you the order you're supposed to do everything in. If I do that, I'm not going to feel as though I'm playing the game. I think games like this rely on the illusion that story events are unfolding as a result of your actions, to heighten the drama. I'm not going to get that if I'm following a walkthrough the whole time.

I did think 'you can't get past because there's an ant blocking your path' was genius, though.

I just finished Mother 3. It was phenomenal.

I await the translation patch eagerly - spookychee's translation thing leaves a lot to be desired, I think.

I'll bet they had the police open their suspect packages... awesome work though! I'd like to see a similar thing for Ico/Shadow of the Colossus.

You do. Everyone does. As soon as the full translation is finished, it's going onto a flashcart and joining a small collection that I loan out to people who don't otherwise have interest in videogames.

Well, the concept designer who worked at valve at the time was eastern european, so maybe that's not a coincidence.

Guys...seriously? Those aren't Russian riot officers. The text isn't cyrillic, nor is it the word for police in Russian.

And, um, look at the background. That thing is not modern art.

So in conclusion "coincidence" doesn't really apply here.

Yeah, I spotted the strider. I figured someone has just put that there to point out how much they look like the Combine.

The faces aren't photoshopped. They're still real riot officers in real europe (where the Valve concept artist came from). He even based City 17 on a European city. I was saying that based on these facts, it's probably not a coincidence they look like the Combine since in all likelyhood he based them on these guys.

Yeah, a lot of the ex-Warsaw Pact countries use gas masks that look near-to-exact like the Combine masks. I posted an ebay auction for one in another thread once upon a time.

Like, say, this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Soviet-Military-GasMask-Officers-CCCP-gas-mask-NEW-PBF_W0QQitemZ180177571770QQihZ008QQcategoryZ70985QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Oooooor, this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Soviet-USST-Military-Officers-Gas-Mask-PBF-white-BN_W0QQitemZ120181045739QQihZ002QQcategoryZ70985QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I think the one I posted was this model though:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Soviet-Military-GasMask-Officer-CCCP-Army-gas-mask-PBF_W0QQitemZ250185889190QQihZ015QQcategoryZ70985QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

As for the original pictures, I'm guessing that they're from Georgia. No, the other one.

I trust that you've heard this version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUE3eheJdKQ

It's so cheesy and light-rock, but I can't help but love it.

Is that a Metal Gear type walking tank in that alley? Looks like something out of War of the Worlds. Or maybe it's just a lightbulb thingy.

It's a strider from Half-Life 2. This was also posted in the Half-Life 2 thread because those masks also look quite similar to the combine soldiers.
