Hey Wes, thanks for the recommendations. I do still have the PS3, and like I said, I'm pretty much stuck with it. Which I don't mind. I'm sure I can live without PS2 compatibility until such time as the games I really like (which aren't a lot, when you think about it) end up as downloads or compilation re-releases. I know the PS3 can still read PS2 game saves, so it's only a matter of time, I'm sure.
Besides, PS2 BC wouldn't matter to my wife and I that much, considering that half of our library is Japanese, and a portion of that consists of bootlegs.
And besides, we all know I'd probably just be playing Mortal Kombat II anyway, and that's on PSN!
A friend might lend me Uncharted, but to be honest, I want to play Portal next, so my next purchase will probably be The Orange Box for 360.
One interesting note: after getting the PS3, I cancelled my Live Gold subscription. Partly to save money, partly because I never seem to play games online, and partly because after getting a free service with PSN, I realized I don't want to pay for Live ever again. Hmm!
My wife's first question was: are PS3 games region-free? I love the fact that they are. Is there anything worth importing? |

It seems lately that the only import games worth playing end up getting released in the US eventually, and that's especially true of systems in dire need of games. So uhh, in answer to your question: no, not really. The only thing I can think of that might be decent is Boku no Natsu Yasumi 3, but I think it requires a lot of Japanese and it's probably more interesting from a quirky perspective than a quality perspective. Better to put $10 towards everyday shooter I'd think.
You'll be interested to hear that the US and Japan share the same Blu-Ray region code though! You can import Japanese Blu-Rays if you want (but not DVDs)!

Pretty much the best PS3 game is Everyday Shooter. I'm not even that big on flOw really (not the PS3 version anyways). Yeah, Uncharted is good, but not worth $60 (to me). If sony was smart they would have offered it up as a killer-app $50 title kind of thing, but they're not.
Also: for DVD support. The PS3 is quite good with video, but it manages audio terribly. I don't know what else to say, or even why it is, but the levels come out of the PS3 exceptionally unbalanced. I was watching some TV show on my PS3 that i'd been watching on my DVD player and I thought the audio was really messed up (the music/effects too loud, voices too soft) and then I put it back in my DVD player and it was fine, so I can stick the PS3 with all the blame. I'm also disapointed that Sony boasts about the fact that the PS3 is hdmi 1.3, yet most of the blu-ray audio codecs that are exclusive to HDMI 1.3+ can not be output from the PS3. I didn't know that until after I bought my receiver for all those fancy lossless codecs
Anyways, yeah, you probably don't care much about all that audio stuff, but to me it's important. If mine wasn't a hardware BC unit for PS2 games I would be feeling a shit-ton of buyers remorse.
You could always play SH2 on the 360... _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

It's true, I could do that. I haven't noticed any major audio issues on my PS3 through my 5.1 system. Hmm!
Hey, Shaper, have you every played SH2 on Xbox 360? I thought I remembered Toups or somebody saying it was kind of gimped. |

From what I recall the flashlight has some weird issues, and there's some texture problems from time to time, but it is fully playable with little annoyance. If you listen to aderack it actually makes the game more surreal. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Interesting! I was just listening to the soundtrack CD while doing something and then I thought — hey, PROTIP: Don't listen to the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack while alone and tired. Yipe!
I think I'm finally not-sick. Let's see how long this lasts! |

Well, call me stupid, but I have had this inexcusable urge to play old Game Boy games -- on an old Game Boy. So I headed over with some games to trade to my favourite game shop and lo and behold! they actually had a brick. It was in great condition, so I bought it, and a copy of Gargoyle's Quest.
What I really wanted this thing for is Super Mario Land. Game Centre didn't have it, but I'm sure I'll find it somewhere.
But goddamn this thing kills your eyes! No wonder my vision is so poor -- to think I played Metroid II all the way through (more than once!) on a Game Boy, next to a lamp, at night. I think I remember my mother warning me of losing my eyesight -- she was right!
Still, the feel of the brick, and those delightfully springy buttons, and that crunchy speaker -- it just can't be matched by an emulator or a newer system. I could have got another GBA SP (I used to own one), but it's not the same.
Hello, Game Boy, good-bye, eyesight! |

the way you word it "free agent" sounds completely different than what you're actually meaning.
Anyways, I don't know how but I missed your last post. I got a very similar urge a few years back and wanted only to play OG GB games on a GBPC (in B&W). I really hate the brick GB, but have always liked the GBPC. I bought about 3 of them for around $7 a piece just in case they break in the future. I have a purple, yellow, and green one now. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Oh, how I wish! How I wish.
Tonight's class was a bit of a tough one. Really had to bust out the teachin' chops, and I still think that some of my students were confounded. Well, at least I got to mess around with a photo of Captain Kirk and get paid for it. |

Dammit. Oneechanbara R came out today in Japan for the Wii. Without a trace of irony I can say that I really want to play this game. I wasn't really interested in it on the Xbox 360 or PS2, but waggle + zombie-killing = good, clean fun.
Also, I hope to god the movie comes out on Blu-Ray. I'm not even kidding.

Aw, that sucks, Skonrad. If it makes you feel better, it looks like we're about to experience our second sloppy snow storm in two weeks—the kind that leaves your feet wet and your boots covered in salt.
When will you be by this way again? |

Wow, adventurous! Maybe when you come back, you can make a game about it.
In other news: I finally have Rock Band! My local game shop was selling the standalone game for really cheap, and they had a used set of drums as well. I wasn't planning on buying anything today at all, but I couldn't pass up the incredible deal. So I slogged home the kit and set it up right away. In one sitting I cleared about 16 songs on Medium.
Holy sweet mother, I was not prepared for how fun this is. I tried a song on guitar, and it was pretty mindless. I tried to sing something (through my Xbox Live mic) and I failed by the end of the first verse—not unexpected, if you've ever heard me sing! So drums it is!
And this is really what I wanted the game for. I've always wanted to learn how to drum, and after this, I may actually take lessons. My first few songs were pretty painful, but my coordination is getting better.
Hilariously enough, I can sing some of the songs while drumming, because I know them well enough. I probably sound awful but at least my coordination isn't complete garbage (and my drumming doesn't suffer). Drum fills take some getting used to; they just appear out of the blue, and half the time I haven't a clue as to what I should play. I love a good end-of-song freestyle rock-out, though. It's so satisfying!
And finally, my in-game avatar is like a psychotic, battle-hardened version of me. I love it. God damn, this game is impressive. |

Whoa! My wife and woke up to the smell of wood smoke this morning. "It smells like bacon!" she said, half-asleep. My sister phoned and I turned on the television (a rarity in itself!) to see that there was a six-alarm fire happening down the street.
It's far enough away, I think, that I doubt my own building is in danger (that'd be quite a distance in the middle of winter for a fire to travel), but it's really freaky to see. Goodbye, Suspect Video! Goodbye, place where I bought my old record player.
I'm going to see if I can sneak some amateur video on my way to work this morning.
EDIT: I didn't take any video, but the Torontoist has these photos. |

Hello. It's my birthday today. I'm also going for my driver's license today (many, many years late). In the rain. Wish me luck!
P.S. I bought a new iPod yesterday and when I went to sync all my music and get my library on the new device, it deleted all my tunes! Thanks, Apple! |

Is getting a drivers license something that's not standard/common/easy in Canada? You're not the first person over 20 who've I've heard mention this from Canada. Most americans get a DL between 16-18 even if they don't need it. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

I was going to say that perhaps we're less car-centric, but that isn't really the case. My situation was unique; most people I know have their license.
We have graduated licenses now in Ontario, which are slightly more arduous. It was easier before the new system took (mid-nineties).
Regardless, this monkey's been on my back for thirteen years, and it's quite a thrill to be finally rid of it. Oh well, except for the fact that I still have to take my exit test in a year.

Ok, honestly I just wasn't sure. I don't know much about DL laws in other countries.

No no, rentals are fine for me. I don't want to tie myself down with that bullshit just yet. Besides, I live downtown in a large city; there is absolutely no need for me to buy a car. I can rent cars at any number of locations for an hour, a day, or a week.
Actually, the first thing I want to do is rent a Smart Car and whip one of those little fuckers around. It'll be like I'm Mario Karting around Toronto. |

So, folks, I might be making a game!
Long story short: I attended No Media Kings' Artsy Game Maker hang-out event. last night with Superbrothers' Craig Adams. It was a great show; participants of the incubator showed off their games. My favourite was Albacross by Rosemary Mosco—oddly, I've met her several times and hadn't even realized it.
Craig showed off his awesome pixel videos, and afterward we all chatted. (Jonathan Mak was there, but I didn't get a chance to talk to him.) It was all very, very cool.
Anyway, I'm looking to join the next iteration of TOJam and actually make a game. I've already been brainstorming what it will be. I'm so excited I could puke. |

Okay, here's the good stuff! Here's a batch of photos from today's shenanigans. Today was really fun. I only put in about 6.5 hours or so, but fuck it—I'm not 18 and I am long past the point of pulling marathon all-nighters. We actually made some good progress, but I've got a lot of assets to draw for tomorrow.
Wes, I'm up for drunken game design talk anytime! Have half-dozen for me!

I don't feel the game is ready yet (there's so much more we have to put in) so it won't be released online for a while. However, I'm going to prepare a page with proper screenshots and a description soon enough so you can all see what it's about.
Here are the images from Sunday. You can see some of the other games there too. |

Ryan, you can call him whatever you like!
Thanks for the support thus far, guys. I hope this doesn't suck. I'll do my best to make sure it doesn't. :-) The music that our "floater" sound guy did is great; I can't wait for you to hear it.
Oh, Jonathan Mak came to the show yesterday when everyone was done. I got to speak to him a little bit this time. He played our game (such as it was) and liked it, which was encouraging. Everyone seems to like the visuals, which is, of course, radicool. I love the way the party-goers bob and move around. They look hilarious. |
