So Microsoft have released an early build of Popfly, a new entry into the no-code style of game creation. I am weighing all options for this kind of software as I want to try my hand.

Note: I see that PopFly requires Silverlight, which I haven't tried/read very much about. Will any of you be giving this a shot?

Wow, ok, I feel out of it. What the hell is going on here?

Basically people aren't sure if this is a for-real game development package or whether this is Microsoft trying to compete with Flash and thus just shoving something out onto the market to say that they've done it.

ETA: After doing some more reading, it's more of a Microsoft-version of AIR and could be a lot more business-oriented than Flash. In any case, early returns seem to indicate that it's horribly slow and clunky thus far.

OK, so Scratchmonkey you are talking about Silverlight and not Popfly, yes? Yes.

Anyway, Shaper, Silverlight is a browser plugin like Flash or Java that is designed to do fancy-ass animations and games and stuff. It is pretty cool, because you can write code for it in a bunch of different programming langauges, and however slow and clunky it might be, at least Silverlight apps start up a thousand times faster than Java applets.

Popfly is a web-based game creation tool for non-programmers built using Silverlight. It contains weirdly ugly shiny huge-ass clipart which, because the graphics editor doesn't work*, every game uses. Everything that has been made with Popfly thus far is aggressively terrible.

Anyway, I am interested in this, simply because I'm interested in all rapid game dev tools, and especially game dev tools with retarded clipart.

* No drawing tools are enabled, and it actually crashed my browser when I tried to use the non-drawing tools.

I was kind of talking about both, in that Silverlight is their AIR competition and that Popfly seems horribly slow and clunky thus far.

Knowing Microsoft, it could be really awesome and usable right about the point where everybody's forgotten about it.
