if you go for emotionalism, that's a pretty good track to use.

the video is worth watching. the text is greenwald, so i'd say you have better things to do.

edit: the poet professor gets off on his rocker but that's to be expected.

having your kids fingerprinted by the local police isn't that odd. they did it when i was a kid, if i'm remembering correctly.

i think it's the scale that freaks people out more than anything else. the idea of trusting anything on that scale - internationally - at the very least confuses the fucking shit out of people. be it immigration, or trade, or what have you.

on the other hand, europe is the scariest fucking place on earth when it comes to this kind of shit.

stuff on that kind of scale is hard to scale back. i am more convinced each day that's why the ultra-paranoid get even more paranoid. we all have a limit to understandings of scale that, outside of ideological considerations, has a profound impact on how we view the world around us.

I don't know about that. He comes off as kind of clueless in his assumption that she should just sell the house to cut her losses. He seems to not be aware of the fact that selling a house takes money to get listed, and get it inspected as liveable and the like, or that people are not really buying houses right now so selling may not be possible or that even if she does sell if she doesn't make enough to cover her balance she's still going to hav to pay off the bank note while finding an apartment with a landlord who doesn't balk at having an unemployed tenent who has to make $2500 house payments every month on top of paying the rent.

nothing like it when a stereotype comes to life.

jeeze louise. i swear these people are plants from some kinda weird government agency to make us all lose hope. they're the same group that supplies the commentors at feministing who had no idea that various kinds of vaginal and penile cosmetic surgeries existed for, like, a while.

actually, it reminds me of a bit in the godfather novel that touched on that very subject - not the labial shaping and whatnot but the pelvic muscle pulls they did in the 60s.

Quote:
None of That Explains Carrot Top

First man: So after Cain killed Abel he was sent from exile and went up Europe way.
Second man: Not Asia?
First man: No, the Caucus mountains... that's up Europe way.
Second man: Oh, you mean like Turkey.
First man: And since black people don't like the cold, Cain went to live in a cave and started to grow and was the first caveman. Now at that time there was dinosaurs but they weren't really dinosaurs, we call them dinosaurs but that's just how God made animals, you know, until you start messin with the DNA of 'em.
Second man: Oh!
First man: Then Cain met his sister and they had a baby together but since Cain was cursed for being the first murderer their baby came out an obino.
Second man: An obino?
First man: Yeah, a red-headed blue-eyed obino and that's where white people come from. Then they went to the north pole and you know it's light there six months and it's dark there six months and the wind is always blowing and that's where Asian people come from. That's why they eyes is like that because the wind was always blowin in they faces.

--D Train

see, people are all worried about creationists - even if they don't know fuck-all about evolutionary theory - but they should really be worried about this kind of stuff. this shit isn't even vaguely coherent; at least the creationists have a playbook to work from!

http://www.winecommonsewer.com/the_wine_commonsewer/2008/04/declare-the-p-1.html

aside from some interesting information concerning a dude who was in jethro tull, i find this the most evocative point:

Quote:
That said, it is instructive to note that despite all the accumulated tax reforms, today's Americans, on average, work 113 days per year to support the government and we spend more on the Tax Man than for Shelter, Food, & Clothing, combined. Heck, taxes are even a bigger chunk of the budget than gasoline.

Think about that as you make out that final check to the US Treasury on April 15th. And while you're at it, ask yourself if you're getting your money's worth.

Don't matter you're political stripe, the way I see it, those guys are going to spend your money on something you don't like and it's going to happen faster than the toilet tank on a low-flow eco-friendly model can refill after a flush. Every dime you gave them in tax during 2007 was spent in the time it took you to read this sentence.

According to the noted genealogical etymologist Eddie Murphy, Chinese people have such small genitals that they 'can't find their shit'. The constant squinting required for them to locate their tiny genitals apparently accounts for 'why their eyes be all slitty'.

The same logic can be used to explain why 'black folk be walkin' all crooked and shit.' According to Murphy, it's because 'they got too much shit, and it done fucked up the way they walk.'

man there's a guy whose life took some really odd turns.

actually, this sort of fits into the african american gnosticism-lite routine i've seen out of a few preachers (creflo dollar being the biggest example) and as it's been filtered by what was left of the garvey splinter groups in new york. at my wife's surprise b-day bash, a friend of mine made a point about the 5 percenters being a manifestation of this as well; i think it makes a lot of sense, even with the odd deification/parochialism towards women that's generally involved in those groups.

after popping around some feministing threads i'd forgotten how dreary the public version of "debate" about the sciences is. (in this case evo psych, itself in need of some more years stewing in the pot, as it were)

to recap so you don't have to:
"women were meant to work in kitchens and get knocked up" or "everything about humanity is socially created including the parts of it which are shaped pre-natally"

stuff like this makes everyone dumber by osmosis.

someone was telling me recently that one of the pop science mags was running a "things people think they know about evolution but don't" type article that was worth checking out, since i've noticed creationists aren't the only horrendously ignorant people running about and playing kultur war in the guise of policy debate.

i totally agree with the woman at 1:15 though, even if further along she comes across as maybe less than totally with it.

I'd noticed that too about modern hostility to evolutionary theory. It's not just the hicks from bumfuck nowhere - a lot of people who wring their hands about creationists start behaving in exactly the same manner when evolution’s implications start spreading to their patch. However far they are from belief in the supernatural these people's discomfort with evolutionary psychology seems to spring up because they just don't want it to be accurate (and, of course, believe that it will go away if they wish hard enough).

I really, really hope that basic tribal hostility continues to keep post-modern and pre-modern vandalism to science operating separately. God help us if they all start working together.

thankfully i don't think they're capable of that on any extended level. the dworking/mckinnon and fundie axis from the late 80s and early 90s was probably the beginning and end of that.

in happier news:
This story also reminds me of why I hate “guys.” Take a look at the picture of the gentleman who was tased, and think about how many times the word “bro” was used that evening. Think about how, every night in America, groups of guys who look exactly like him go out thinking they’re reinventing the wheel by getting drunk, getting loud and getting in fights.

“Yo, bro, me an’ my boys are goin’ to Vegas, muthafucka! Yo, bro, it’s my boy’s bachelor party, bro! Yo, we got a suite at the Borgata, we got limos, an’ we got VIP passes for the pool party, bro!”

I really fucking hate guys. I hate everything they do. I hate seeing them, hearing them, and having them inflict themselves on the rest of my senses. I hate watching them get the shit kicked out of them after their drunken, drug-addled auras of invincibility put them in situations they’re incapable of handling. I hate how ordering UFC pay-per-views and wearing Affliction shirts makes them think they can beat everyone up. I hate when they say “bro.” I hate the whole fucking guy thing and what they’ve turned it into.

i call them "dudes" but it's the same basic idea.

i had to google affliction shirts, but i must confess i haven't seen a lot of them around. on the other hand, they look sort of like bad metal covers, so maybe i have seen them around and thought "huh, that guido who does a lot of curls and no squats likes shitty metal, how queer."

oh yeah saw the murakami exhibit at the brooklyn museum last week some was interesting and some was life-sized soul cancer complete with jizz lassos. i've spent 10 bucks in worse ways but i've also done it in better as well.

i know the embedded expensive handbag shop from the people with the annoying logo that's reprinted all the time but whose name escapes me right now vutton? yeah vutton anyway it's whatever, man. it's pretty fucking silly for a fine-arts museum - whose existence relies on expensive donations and 40 dollar t shirts - and whose very mission is to highlight what stamp collecting is like for the megaultra wealthy to be all "oh ho ho this exhibit comments on commercialism" and whatnot.

no, homeslice makes expensive knicknacks and giant murals and the occasional acrylic jizz lasso. there's nothing shameful in that. but pretending that's not what's going on? bah. purity is for puritans and retards.

if i'm making limited edition shirts or figurines or whatever, and i'm selling them at high margins, i'm not "commenting on capitalism and modern life" - i'm actively participating in in a lucrative niche market. that's (an idealized) free market in a nutshell.

(and conclusively demonstrating that the labor theory of value is fucking retarded, but that's another story for another day.)

i've never cared for dave barry for the most part, but this was genuinely funny.

Quote:
Be sure to mail your return in a timely manner, because this year, filing taxpayers will receive an Economic Stimulus Payment. This is a very exciting new program that I will explain using the Q and A format:

Q. What is an Economic Stimulus Payment?

A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.

Q. Where will the government get this money?

A. From taxpayers.

Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?

A. Only a smidgen.

Q. What is the purpose of this payment?

A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.

Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China?

A. Shut up.

personally, i'm using mine to pay for black market and second-hand goods only, so it's all unreported and unmeasured income. (of course that has secondary effects that may be measured, so unless it stays entirely off the radar blah blah blah blah blah LEVIATHAN WOO!!!)

http://suicidefood.blogspot.com/

i'm not entirely sure if the people running this are serious or not, but i have the worst jonesing for bbq right now.

if they are serious, well...ehhh...we are death. the jains understood this and went to lengths you would consider mad, in your secular and safe environment, because they were trying to reconcile the deeper issue involved with humans being the products of death like all living things.

She's Not Even the Toughest Woman on Avenue A

30ish girl, looking at twenty-year olds: Are they going on about how old they are? Oh, please.
45ish rocker chick: Yup, they are.
30ish girl: I think I'm older than they are!
45ish: Me too. From the look of things, they're about the age of my first abortion.
30ish girl: [Chokes on beer.]
45ish: Wonder how old that would be now?
30ish girl: Please stop.

i am going to continue to pretend that the suicide food thing is a joke or a stealth marketing campaign for some veggie line of not-dogs or whatever. (hot dogs made with tofu are called "not dogs" - get it? some are pretty decent.)

because damn - do they really think that a) most meat eaters don't think meat is delicious, and most meat sellers would be meat eaters and whatnot and b) that most meat eaters don't realize that what they're eating is dead animal flesh?

who cries for the lettuce, you smug fucking pieces of shit?

That site reminds me of Chomsky part of the "Philosophers Answer The Question Of The Chicken And The Road" thing.

@Dracko:

I wonder where he went.
