Try EVE instead. It's great for not playing. (Unless you enjoy the generic template missions.)
All that mining has really helped me work through that pile of unread magazines. Starting now on all those books i was going to read. _________________ I felt sheer anarchic joy when I ran over my first pedestrian. |

Yeah, my girlfriend's old roommate was addicted to it for years. She pretty much flunked out of school because she played it so much. The only reason she started was because her best friend got into it, and she's even worse. She doesn't go anywhere or do anything. When she rarely does step out of the house, it's just for a few minutes and she makes sure to call her friend and have her log in for her in case someone needs to reach her in-game. There are three or four other people I talked to for years on IRC or Palace that have completely vanished into WoW the past few years. Strong medicine. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. I played WOW for like 5 minutes before I realised there was nothing there for me.
Someone once said World of Warcraft does us a favor since it takes all the dumb people with no taste out of society :O That's a bad thing to say though. |

i am unnaturally fascinated with tales of people led astray from their lives, be it by cults or by everquest.
it's much more interesting than the usual drugs and hookers --> redemption type arc.
and i do wonder what was missing in their lives that they found there. _________________

Me too, actually, as long as it doesn't actually affect me.
A friend of a friend has become a complete stoner burnout because of WoW. He is a complete empty shell of a human being. My wife was never like that; she just used it as an easy leisure activity when she could be doing something — anything — else. Thank fuck we're free of it. |

Tell me more about this. I'm honestly interested. I didn't think you played.
Though it is nice to see everyone think that I'm going to vanish into a black hole of WoW and never emerge. I can see the fear and worry in all your eyes and it brings a tear to soul. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

i have to admit, i've been playing WoW too.
mostly this was to see what the expansion's like, and what they've done with the game. I was in the beta.
Like any other MMO it's not bad - in moderation. Doing other stuff, playing other games helps distract you from the generally monotonous quests. Also the undead quests up til the end of Arathi tend to be pretty radical.
The rest of the game feels bland and uninteresting after you concoct a new plague and poison a farmer's dog. <3 _________________

space invaders extreme looks very excellent!
I was playing Dino Crisis 2 earlier. I really like the game until all the old survival horror troupes start showing up. I wish there was some sort of arcade mode version of this game where you just went down a linear path with the occasional boss. As it stands I've never finished it, yet I've started it nearly ten times. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

SPACE INVADERS EXTREME IS VERY EXCELLENT god i hate fucking space invaders but that game takes everything sucky and slow and boring and THROWS THAT SHIT OUT THE WINDOW it is like no one is going to pay attention to space invaders anymore, lets add all sorts of colors and techno and lines and pointless graphics that make it look like a new wave party
also the cool like powerups that let you clear HALF THE SCREEN and the bosses are rad and the bonus rounds are so much fun that i pretty much just keep an eye out for the rainbow ship and only half-pay attention to the actual invaders while i play
also i played it with that little arkanoid paddle and i think that made the game super, my friend said it looks amazing in widescreen psp-ness though |

Yeah I can see how it could get addictive. I remember trying to collect every last little thing in Wind Waker. The thing is, once you've done everything there is to do, all you're left with is a hollow feeling of D: . Pleasure is a bottomless basket! They should write that on the box like a cigarette packet warning.
The thing is WoW has the genuine incentive of you being able to sell your maxed-out character for real $$$, so you can even justify your behaviour to yourself! It's ridiculous though, since you could earn all that money and more if you put that much time into something worthwhile.
On the latest One Life Left podcast http://onelifeleft.libsyn.com/ here's a song by a group called " :( " about a man who works in Tesco's stacking shelves and gets no respect, but at night he is a hero within the World of Warcraft. I can see how that's an attractive proposition to some people. |

Hey guys! Sorry, I've been gone I've actually just been posting a lot more at Select Button lately. It's not just WoW, it's also that nobody here really plays the games I've been playing lately.
The games I've been playing recently are Rainbow Six Vegas 2, World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, Halo 3, and a tiny bit of Smash Bros and Shiren. Today Gran Turismo: Prologue arrives. These are games that I think most of the posters here couldn't give a shit about. Come to think of it, I can't think of anything that's really caught on around here lately. Maybe we need to start a game club or something...
Oh yeah! And I swear I'll update the banners soon! The biggest issue is that I can't access TGQ from work anymore since they banned sites that are hosted outside of the US. I'm posting this from my phone!

You know, over the three characters I've made for Morrowind I put over 350 hours into that game. WoW reminds me a lot of the things that I loved about Morrowind, which is mostly the freedom and world building. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

That guy's excuse for playing WoW 24/7 and neglecting his family was he 'didn't want to get too attached' to his baby in case it suddenly died! What!
They destroy the game discs on the show, but presumably he can just get another disc/ torrent it and log on to his account, right? I bet that's exactly what he did after the show.

You can just download World of Warcraft from fileplanet, filefront, or from an official torrent. PC Gamer was giving it away free with each disc for a while. The entire time I imagined him thinking about that night's raid. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. We shall depart. |

I know this guy who runs a game store, and he blames the lack of PC game sales on WoW because people will just play that for months and months and never buy anything else for the machine. _________________

Yeah, and we know his excuses are lame-ass from the whole SIDS thing. 'NO HONEY, TYRA BANKS DESTROYED THE *DISC!* I'M NOT USING THE DISC, AM I? SEE, I KEPT MY PROMISE! NOW SHUT UP WHILE I SLAY THIS DRAGON!' |

Yeah, that guy is a tool. The game is actually very good guys. I understand being upset about how it makes people act, but that's the people's fault, not the game's. If you can't put the game down long enough to do something (like update banners) that says that there's something wrong with you.
Wait. What?

Because of Deets' blog about the Japanese rerelease, I decided to bust my way through Phantasy Star II again, considering I never finished it properly. I forgot how goddamn infuriating the game is. At least in the GBA version, which was all I had handy, the probability of enemies getting the drop on you is insanely high relative to other games--something like one in five battles gives the enemies a free turn. Which would be fine if you could garner the same probability in your favor, but at least in this version it's impossible to get a preemptive attack. It's the very definition of cheap. Is it like this in the original version? In the remakes? I just don't know.
All the grinding has made my brain bleed. I'm at the end of the game and can't beat the last boss, so I'm walking back and forth until I learn Megid, and by this point am pretty tired of having to heal so often because all of the free attacks enemies get. Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.
Edit: Managed to beat it at level 34, one shy of Megid. The ending is. . . something else. _________________

Space Invaders Extreme FINALLY got here! The box art is gorgeous. Very M.I.A.-y but with fewer machine guns. I will play it and probably agree with everyone a little later.

Hey, I assume every one knows this by now, but Trackmania Nations Forever (they have terrible naming schemes for these games btw) is free for download on Steam. I got it on a lark and you know, it's really good! It has everything I liked about Grip Shift, without all the stuff I really hated (like, oh say, jumping). Apparently there's other ways to get it free without signing up for steam if you don't want to, so I recommend giving it a try! _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Oh yeah, it's pretty awesome. I've always been a fan of Trackmania since the first game.
It was so hard to get people to try it because most of my buddies don't like driving games. When they finally played it they were like OH MAN YOU WERE RIGHT IT'S AMAZING and I was all like TOTALLY and we chugged beers and crushed the cans on our foreheads. _________________

I'm playing Marathon!
I got stuck on the third level and asked Cycle for help. Turns out I didn't need it, the game just glitched out a switch I needed so I had to start over. I love playing on kindergarten because of how ludicrous it makes the whole situation. "Our entire, moon-sized ship has been taken over by aliens! You can kill most of them in one shot. Kill them all I am a computer." I am assured the storyline gets much more complicated, and the series gets much better. Until then I'm still enjoying myself. The levels are compact and easy, and the hi-res texture pack shields me from the motion sickness I normally get with old FPSs. _________________

It's kind of weird that Marathon is becoming to me what Portal is to Cycle, just as Portal is to me what Marathon is to Cycle. AND YET WE REMAIN FRIENDS
Seriously what is the deal with Marathon. |

In the chunks of spare time from school and work, I've been able to play some Roma Surrectum for Rome: Total War, Warlords Battlecry 3, and Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis. The latter being for coverage, but I can respect a game that has a main character's best friend as a cat (hey, earl!). I also got in Iron Soldier for the Jaguar the other day and am looking forward to trying it out in a bit. _________________ Come to me, Mordel. We shall depart. |
