I wouldn't be able to get to it until this weekend at the earliest.

If someone were to go through the thread and download all of the new banners and zip them up and email them to jeremy.penner@gmail.com, that would probably speed up the process a whole lot.

And if you do it, you should award yourself the custom title Bruce Banner, ok?

ok I am going to take my mad hacking and coding skillz and assume that no one has special knowledge about the batch of banners up there and make that which ApM hath requested but maybe even better and easier for him to UPDATE THE BANNERS.

There will be perl scripts. By the love of god almighty, THERE WILL BE PERL SCRIPTS.

Hey does anyone know why we have like,
http://www.gamersquarter.com/banners/tgq600.jpg
and
http://www.gamersquarter.com/banners/tgq600alt.jpg
???
i.e. what does the "alt" mean? I don't remember seeing 600alt come to think of it.

Hey guys! The reason for the alts is because originally people were submitting like 20 banners for each game that were only slightly different, so rather than choose one and delete the other I decided to save the alts with the other extension. They don't show up because they were never supposed to!

So yeah, I can update the banners, but it's nothing but busywork and it kind of sucks. ApM and Kirkjerk are both willing to update the banners, but only if someone else is willing to do all of the busywork for them. So yes!

I'm going to get on the banners tonight, but that doesn't mean you guys can quit what you're doing (making it easier to do in the future). If we can make this easier to do then hell yes! Lets do it!

(To answer my previous question, http://www.gamersquarter.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=77&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=500 has the last update info)

(and still tgq590.jpg dups tgq496.jpg and tgq591.jpg dups tgq531.jpg )

I also like that these two banners by dessgeega

and

are both exactly 18149 bytes.
(there are some other duplicate sizes, but none have this karmic connection)

Wes, I'm about 15 minutes away from having a zip file with images (renamed to match the naming scheme) for you to peruse, check, and upload...

In my defense, I had them all downloaded and converted to jpegs up until October of last year, but I never had the time to rename them. It takes for freaking ever to do all of that. Kirkjerk is the bomb.

HEY FUCKERS! BANNER UPDATE! (thanks to Kirkjerk)

(Also we're sold out of issues 6 & 7. Dess, when you get a chance, could you please update the images on the shop page? I updated the page itself, but the SOLD OUT images aren't there. Thanks!)

Shit. There's only 1013? For some reason I set the banner updater to update for up to 1017... We need 4 more banners quickly!

I suggest this image:

Hop to it, friends!

and I was like YES!

Sucks a bit that we didn't do the PNG thing, but then again that means that the banner identifier just works without me having to do anything. Thanks, Kirk and Wes!

Yup. It was a screen shot I took from the game. A particularly stunning vista.

that is from ALL POINTS BULLITEN which is an awesome game and is totally the inspiration for GTA even though the creators deny it.

Game play (badly) video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Orw3_f3flHE

A few thoughts:
1. Wow, I'm impressed at what a recognizable sound feel Atari Games had at that point, from the satisfying coin drop sound, to the music style, to the character of the low fidelity samples... it reminds me of like 5 games at once, from "Super Sprint" to "Marble Madness" and "Indiana Jones" ("Paperboy", "Gauntlet"...)

2. As for the GTA influence... perhaps. But then again, there were some other games with that kid of feel. Even Spy Hunter to a certain degree. And also, I'm not 100% sure this is relevant, but when GTA3 came out, it was almost creep how much like the 2D games the overhead view looked. It could be that if you do an overhead city/cop driving game, it's gonna look around the same in some ways....

Haha, 'Freddy Freak was arrested for selling drugs'. That game is on the same hardware as Rampage, Destruction Derby and 720, the skateboard game where you have a whole city to explore! And if you spend more then 10 seconds exploring it you get mauled by KILLER BEES and you get game over

I SURE COULD USE A DONUT

APB is like my favourite arcade game of all time* and it will never be the same under emulation. Actually, all of the arcade games I really miss are games that require a steering wheel. (I owned the high score board of Pole Position at my local high school arcade, mostly because absolutely nobody else played it.) I wonder if I should just get a proper steering wheel controller.

I was looking into this. The code for the banners is a bit of dead simple javascript that lives in the browser. I could easily update the script to handle PNGs + GIFs; all we'd have to do is be careful with a naming scheme, and I could help with that.

Wes + ApM, should we do this? I'd be willing to help pull it all together, the only thing I don't have the power to do here is replace the code snippet itself, but I could rig up a full demo etc...

I played the demo of Bookworm adventures (don't ask) and had an excellent opportunity for decent word points and seeing what kind of dictionary the game really has...
