I am saddened that the Salvou is not in that picture.

you mean the solvalou from xevious? if it were up to me the metarion would be replaced with the x-lay or black fly. maybe even the caesar from star soldier.

This thread should have been titled "options and bits" although the darius ship wouldn't fit in then.

There are links to lots of nice models on this page. Look at this one, for example. And here's the Ikaruga ship from that same page.

One thing I'd like to see one day is the Xevious movie that's mentioned here.

You know in actual space there is no benefit to having wings and aerodynamic styling on a spacecraft since there's no air. Enjoy your MILITARY FETISHISM!

did you just accuse opa opa of being military fetishization?

(because if you did i should point out opa opa never travels in space.)

Perhaps they have an aerial function.

yeah, if you're going to go that route it should be noted that most shooters do not take place exclusively in space. most of rayforce's areas take place on or in the earth.

In that case, if the ideal of aerodynamics is a flying wing, then a big hippo thing with little wings stuck on it (like those r-type fighters) is the opposite! It would just sink like a stone! They should either make no concessions to aerodynamics or go completely the other way. Shit or get off the pot. That's my advice to you, R-Type!

Maybe the wings are for corrections only. Like the little fins on a missile.

Maybe they have anti-grav and the wings are just to save power.

Lifting body.

Best example.

It's just a videogame Harveyjimjams, it's allowed to be unrealistic.

WAT

You're kidding right

Everytime I play a videogame I have to somehow justify it as being realistic, otherwise I'm not into it. For example I see the Mario series as the dream of a shell-shocked vietnam veteran who now works as a plumber. It makes the whole thing a lot more emotional. This OPA OPA thing, I ain't down with that.

Didn't the NES have a couple more of similar games?

Yeah!
My favorite work by him got released as "SimTunes"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IjmskFuXuk
gives you a slim idea of what it was...
basically a block paint program, except you had 4 or 5 "musical bugs" walking on the surface of it, and every color then corresponded to a note, plus each square could also have a "movement" command, like turn left, or warp to another square. And each bug had a set of instruments it could be set to: some musical, other perscussiony

So you could use it as a poor man's sequencer, or just focus on the art, or both, with lots of room for cleverness.

That along with "Kai's Power Goo" are two programs I wish worked on modern windows. (SimTunes works, but modern computers just don't seem to guarantee that the sound playback will be properly synchronized Sad )

I might have to finally get into DOSBox or some such

Because of the strength of my love for SimTunes, ElectroPlankton became the Killer App for me to get a DS.

And only if it's about SimTunes too because it's great.

I keep forgetting, what game is that ship on the right from? (And why are there two different Vic Vipers?) I remember it's a way less high-profile game than the others. You'd think it would be Thunderforce, but nooo....

(Just talking about visibility here.)

isn't it from image fight?

i was hoping to see a solvalou in one of these sets, myself. though a thunderforce ship would be just dandy.

chubby little silver hawks!

these are the cutest ever.

the ship on the far right (in the original picture) is the daedelus from image fight.

i thought the inclusion of the metarion (gradius II) was kind of a dumb choice. but they're apparently releasing them in chronological order? though the vic-viper they chose is the gradius V model.

Ummm, they figured out the bumblebee thing.

Their wing flapping bounces wind off of a wind bubble that is created by the flapping of their wings, thus increasing the virtual area.

or something like that

That's the Gradius II Vic Viper. Ihe MetaLion flew only in Gradius 2 (MSX) and probably by implication the Nemesis 90 Kai remake. The idea being each numerical gradius has a different model of Vic Viper. Canon!

Tell that to Harvey James, Frank Cifaldi.

One of the Vipers should have been a Lord British.
