Holy shit. That's as close to conceptually perfect as a video game's ever going to get in my eyes.

just in the game

generally speaking boys are okay with it, especially if they can close their eyes and pretend

that's why prison works so well

Do you reckon that was a cynical attempt to make a cult classic?

They almost seem to be too aware of what they're doing.

I'd have to agree with Harvey after seeing the reaction to it. It can go straight on my "piece of crap" list.

Judging something based on a fandom is retarded. Everything has a retarded fandom.

Arguably, no.
Yes, they are both game/genre parodies (ain't nothing wrong with that) and both are of the "very easy", can't really lose variety, and have some of the trappings like gratuitous strategy guides etc.

The newer game parodies different things though, and not just genres; the idea of how your main weapon can't really work against the big boss, big bosses hanging out in a place that can easily kill them, instructions built into a game world, presumably breaking the 4th wall, and the catchy jokey relevant custom theme song.

Anyways, I like it. I won't come back to it, but it's not like I resent it.

it feels like robot work. it's just a chore, there's no strategy or planning involved. plus it won't ever let me past the second screen even though i've put the tiles exactly where the blueprint dictates. (i guess it doesn't help that the blueprint is needlessly dense and easy to misread, which i suppose goes with their high-clutter design aesthetic.)

I got the second screen wrong too. You have to compare the blueprint with the 'artist's impression' on the right hand side, otherwise you might make the whole thing facing the wrong way (as I did).

ANYWAY, fuck that shit

Christ that website. The pixel art's great, they get top marks for that but that's no reason to needlessly stick it all over the joint.

Get Lost is a brutal point and click adventure game done in flash. Expect to die more than you do in most other games of this sort. Also expect the game to not hold your hand at all. There is less direction at the start than even Zork gave.

Couple interesting, formerly commercial games:

Titans of Steel: Warring Suns is a lovely over-complicated turn and hex-based strategy, that involves GIANT ROBOTS that you can customise freely. Also has RPG stats and four races and stuff! I had a quick go and it looks interesting, if you like this sort of thing check it out for sure. Thankfully, it includes tutorials.

http://www.matrixgames.com/games/game.asp?gid=237

Storm Angel is an old school horizontal shooter featuring 3D POLYGON GRAPHICS that is pretty average really, but still entertaining enough to check out if you like this sort of thing. Can buy upgrads between levels and what not! It's from the creators of BLIP & BLOP: BALLS OF STEEL, who went out of business not that long ago so they made the game freeware (I'm led to believe... the person who posted about it is trying to find proof but their official site is down, but he says they released both their games via torrents before closing shop). Right now the only place to get it is at this french abandonware site:

http://www.abandonware-france.org/ltf_abandon/ltf_jeu.php?id=802

p.s hi derek, i wrote about your database thing in the latest issue of my magazine. i wish i could add games but i guess people would abuse that.

this looks amazing. now to play it and see!

The graphics are the best for a custom roguelike I've seen since the japanese JoJo Bizarre Adventure one.

yes, they're lovely.

i actually really admire sewer goblet for the way it uses hunger to balance EVERYTHING. it has three keys that manage to be contextual for EVERYTHING (E is for eat, equip, etc.), making it really progressive for a roguelike.

Komatsunaya has released a Hatsune Miku typing game called Byoukan Vocaloid Typing free for download for a limited time. You’re supposed to type every letter from A to Z and the lower your score the better.

via canned dogs.

Dino Run didn't really jump out at me when I saw it on some indie game Web logs a while back, but someone recommended it to me a few days ago and I think it's great.

Yeah, I echo that sentiment. I'm not really a fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog games, but if they played something like that I might be.

Although this is old news, that Jojo roguelike is awesome and somebody with infinite time and programming savvy needs to get to doing an English patch for it. I love the slavish love Jojo games have for their source material.

Petri Purho put out a new game and it's not Crayon Physics Deluxe. It's Jimmy's Lost His Toilet Paper and it's quite lovely with the visuals and the music and so on.

To play the game, you at least need a list of the stands, since the books that power up your equipment (like the scrolls in Shiren) require you to know which part of the series each stand appears in. Which is, you know, kind of silly.

The game itself is also pretty grindy. It seems like the only way to make it through even the second dungeon (which I'm still working on) is to gather lots of equipment you can meld together, because the enemies get noticably stronger every couple of floors and there's a real dearth of escape/panic button items. You can buy some good equipment from the hotel you start in, but that requires doing runs to rack up money, and so on. Of course, I used to think that tempering up a mastersword in Shiren would solve all my problems, so maybe I just need to play this game some more.

Somebody else has to have heard of Kongai already, but let me mention it anyway. I guess you could call it a cross between Street Fighter and Pokemon? The primarily method for getting new characters and items is completing a goal in a sponsored bad flash game of the week, but the actual game is great fun.

Really, though, the search tags (stolen from another forum) make the most eloquent arguments:
