That religion guide looks quite handy...really should use the Ecumenical temple area more aside from my Mummy Stealth trick. My "best" characters that can only seem to get to like floor 13/12 have all had no religion...so this may well plug some holes in my understanding and success along with the rest of the goodies on that site! |

Recent happenings:
-Have had quite nice results with Troll Bererker Hand to Hander's. My highest score ranks are of this type, with my new deepest level being 16...plus I actually managed to clear all the way down to the 4th floor of the Orc Mine...though I got killed by a bad pack on the way back up what was an alternate route that would've led me to the Magic Elf area (which I would have not gone to...no way).
Another interesting thing to me has been the Weapon Shops I've ran into with this character....several cool sounding named weapons and expensive bits of equipment tantalize me for when I'll come across them again with a character that could actually put them to good use. All ofther builds I've tinkered with have pretty much failed to get off to a running start ever since the MA Troll Berserker started getting traction....I guess that means it is the easiest build to play for at least the first dozen or so dungeon levels.
Next time I will think to train Dodge on some random weak enemy that shows up in a good chokepoint place in a deeper level when I have a lot of skill exp to blow since fighting/MA only advance so far and have ample oppourtunity. With the Troll HP regen...it should work.
-One question: At what level of worship does Trog and the like start making with the goodies(AC and RES seem to be my downfall pretty often)? I tend to get all 3 skills easy enough yet only use Berserk so as to not lose Piety...and I think my rank has gone as high as Champion/Slayer/something cool sounding like that by the time I wind up dead either to some powerful force or stupid move like forgetting to use great wand. |

I am playing this. Thanks for the reminder that it exists! I sure wish I could find my DS so I could then homebrew it and then put this game on to it.
I am not very good at this game and I haven't played a lot of it. I tend to shy away from classes that are purely hack and slash, though, for whatever reason, though also avoiding pure spellcasters. However...
My favorite race/class is naga venomancer. Thoughts?
edit: I also really enjoy playing spriggan assassins. _________________

Finally gotten a decent start on a necromancer. I've got seven spell levels left to memorize, any suggestions?
Kind of leaning away from animate dead. Skeletons were really useless, and non-big zombies are kind of seeming that way too. Plus Makhleb wants the bodies. _________________

Know your strengths, and figure out what will or won't work on what. Use any offensive scrolls you have (though they can be tough to identify) when you're in over your head, and don't shy away from emptying your wands since scrolls of recharging and more wands can be found.
Some monster strengths and weaknesses are pretty obvious (ice beasts get chewed up by fire) but some are a little odd (many/most demons are immune to Wrack). Don't be afraid to let a few characters die to figure out what works best when.
And when you've got nowhere else to go and you're in over your head, run like hell toward stairs down, since there'll be more loot and xp to be had whereas a floor up will almost never help you.
Also, it's usually not the best idea to dive into a side-dungeon right away, usually it's wise to go down a floor or two, THEN backtrack to the branch in question. I jumped right into the Lair on Nommus, and so far it's been really hard. If I weren't a Makhleb kind of girl, I'd be utterly screwed.
(don't use slashing damage on hydras unless your weapon's on fire btw) _________________

LOL, I really need to get back into this game again...especially since I (somehow) only recently discovered Stone Soup and I can't help but be curious how it stacks up to the Vanilla Crawl. |

It's much better! There are all kinds of little interface improvements, like being able to see if enemies are dozing, your avatar accurately representing your equipment, and a bunch of more subtle stuff that I've forgotten but it all makes the experience much smoother. I was skeptical at first about some of the changes (do we really need a god of orcs?) but after poking around the discussions on sourceforge it seems the dev team really is devoted to avoiding bloat and focusing on what makes for good gameplay. |

Stone Soup 0.4.4 is up folks with lots of fixes and enhancements(though the real big show 0.5.0 is steaily coming), let's revive this up again with new adventures---such as newfound vampiric ones.
I actually had some degree of success lately with a Deep Elf Fire Elementalist for the fist time last night. Died a foolish death due to not using my items proper and on my first ever run in with Snorg the Troll. My advice....don't let him get anywhere near you... |

I've gotten the new trunk version.
It's pretty sweet. The two new gods are decent. Fedhas (plant god) works really well with my Merfolk Crusader, which is one of my favorite classes and definitely my favorite race. It's a fine fit, though I'm still not sure which god would be the best fit for my Kobold Enchanters. The snail god with the name I can't spell seems kind of not fun to me.
I'm still not terribly good and haven't made it past level 12., and even then only with an Orcish Paladin. On the downside the new tiles version is SLOOOWWW on windows if your graphics drivers aren't up to date on their OGL. _________________ Signature:
