Japan are killing whales because they secretly have developed intelligent robot whales to take their place. The robots we have seen so far are only a diversion as western countries wouldn't be able to comprehend such a technological leap at this stage.

Yep! And you know why they had to resort to whaling after WWII? Because of the trade embargo placed upon them by the United States! Good times.

i don't usually like the kind of shooting game where the player's vehicle is big and clunky and slow, but robotix has some compelling level design.

so nifflas has released knytt nano, a tiny, gorgeous little adventure. it comes with a clever little puzzle game with no instructions and a portfolio of sara sandburg's (who created the creatures in knytt) work.

Dracko recently pointed me to this Aliens remake. The production values are pretty low compared to other remakes I've played recently, but they do their job and the game itself is pretty fun. I found it pretty interesting to see how they handled HORROR and TENSION back in the olds days, not to mention first-person action!

Weird. Just read the Game Informer preview of the new Aliens game, and then I thought of that old Alien for the Atari 2600. Who knew that the movie had so much in common with Pac-Man? All it really needed was the addition of a flamethrower.

i have never wanted to like a bernie game as badly as i do stargirl and the thief from the exploded moon, but bernie still has a problem imbuing his platformers with any sense of speed.

Ha! That's exactly what I like to joke about in regards to Space Hulk. It's Pac-Man. In space. With guns!

it's awful is what it is. we had to design levels for it in my level design class. the emphasis on luck in that game is absurd.

The random factor just goes to show how the best laid plans of mice and men, etc. etc. It's all about strategy. I had a lot of fun working out what the trick was to Space Hulk on that freeware windows version Dracko showed me. The game is based around establishing bulkheads and perimeters and blocking off areas and protecting the flamethrower guy who can't defend himself, and all that jazz. I like it.

The emphasis on luck in Cataan is absurd too! "Thaty must make it a horrible game too. Except for the fact that it's totally not.

alright, strawman.

here's the thing.

one side in space hulk is at a tremendous disadvantage. for that side, no matter how good your strategy is, if you get a bad result on a critical dice roll, it's over. you're done. bad guys win.

you try designing levels around that.

I don't know about levels, but I designed my strategies around that, sure! You have to make your unit flexible and allow for failures.

The idea that one side is at a disadvantage is definitely a planned element that's been there since the original board game. I think it's been designed so the Genestealer player doesn't have to use any strategy at all, as all they can really do is run at the Marine player. Because of this it means the game is ideal for solo play, unlike (for example) chess.

karoshi is suicide salaryman: the puzzle game. aside from having genuinely devious puzzles, it also has screens which play with the conventions the player has learned in clever ways. kill yourself to win!

seven minutes is a game that uses the newly-minted masocore genre to meditate on death. masocore games aren't defined by difficulty, i think (though they are often difficult), but to the extent to which they are mindfucks: they fuck with the player's assumptions, they violate the player's most basic expectations. they approach player death as a narrative device rather than a penalty.

(there's an article here that i have yet to write. well, i've kind of written it, but it's scattered in different places.)

the influence of cactus on the freeware scene is palpable and entirely a good thing.

gunmute is great. most interactive fiction, when you try to attack an in-game character, gives the stock message "violence isn't the answer to this one". gunmute's "about" page happily assures you that, with most of the puzzles in the game, violence is the answer.

it is a nice little game.

i thought seven minutes was a bit rubbish, though.

a game with so much replaying should have faster transitions. the music is super catchy though.

rom check fail is pretty great. the game contains a player, enemies and scenery. every few seconds, all of these will change (the scenery is purely aesthetic). you may be fighting the qix as mario, or goombas as the ship from defender. you may transform into the tank from space invaders and be suddenly unable to move up and down. and there are ghosts from gauntlet coming after you. oh no! the game breaks sometimes, but you can't blame it. and the window says "mame32" and wears the mame icon.

I haven't gotten deeply into the game yet... is there a way to beat a level except as Pac-Man?

Its interesting to compare this game to the short story Mallory that boingboing just linked to..... people read that and let me know what you think.

Hm, yes?

I’m the Mekuri Master, the Skirt-Flip King. The name isn’t their idea… It’s mine. I’m a man who was born to lift skirts. You think any so-called “rules” are gonna stop me? When classes get out, I race through the corridors like a fearsome wind, flipping, flipping, flipping up girls’ skirts and letting the whole world know that I am the Mekuri Master!”
