Man when I'm controlling a dude on rails with a luchadore mask and dual grenade launchers, running into a closet where a anime french maid lets me save, I feel like I can go ahead and call that satire.

given that the "puzzles" in question are incredibly easy, i'm willing to guess that they're intended as parody. that doesn't mean the time you spend on them constitutes a worthwhile playing experience, though.

don't let me stop you being a jerk to everyone who disagrees with you though james.

I'm still playing through RE4 and the puzzles are actually about the same level of difficulty as the ones in Killer 7.

Yeah, the ability to be satirical while avoiding being bad in the same way as what you're satirizing is, is ah, a little tricky. One might even say that doing so is the mark of good satire. It's tough in videogames because you still have to do the stupid stuff that you're supposed to be laughing at -- you don't get the cathartic buzz that you do from say, the "racism" in Blazing Saddles.

Or to put it another way, even if you put scare quotes around "fetch quest" or "find the eagle crest", you still have to spend an hour or so farting around with it.

Yeah, this was the problem with Deer Avenger and The Bards Tale... they constantly made fun of how stupid the game conventions and mechanics are but uhh, you still have to put up with them. AND repetitive jokes!

Okage was maybe the worst example of this, since it was a boring JRPG making fun of boring JRPGs.

It did have an NPC who would do nothing except scream "Spider babies! Get 'em off me!", so it had that going for it. Which is nice.

Yeah, I actually preferred the way that Killer7 did it's satire/parody, in that it wasn't constantly rubbing it in your face and telling you it was bad, it just kinda was.

As for what I was talking about Harvey, if you had bothered to pay attention to the game, you might have noticed that all the key items, while shaped differently, were all called the same thing. I forget what that was, but it was there. It was basically making fun of no matter what the item was, it was just going to open some door somewhere.

But it's OK, you can be an ass on the internet and not actually pay attention. It's what the net is for!

i want to make this conversation be about barkley shut up and jam gaiden but that would just be an unfortunate reminder that i don't have the time to finish the game.

I didn't pay attention because that game was as much fun as pulling teeth :(

It's easy to satirise worn-out gameplay tropes. Harder to actually create a game that avoids them. Killer 7 seems like a pretty pointless exercise to me.

Despite FREQUENT annoyances, RE4 is keeping me slogging through it. Salazar is one of the worst villians in history, though.

Game would have been better if it were cut in half, though.

Been playing Sam and Max hit theroad which I accidentally pirated. Man, it's kind of a pain. The commenting on tired adventure cliches was done a lot better in Le Cirque du Zale. Speaking of which I downloaded Cirque du Zale and gave it another playthrough. It's still moderately difficult with only a couple hotspot finding parts, and I'd reccomend it to anyone who would like something in the Spirit of Monkey Island.

Personally, I always found Sam & Max to be one of the lesser LucasArts adventures. Great writing and characters and all that jazz, but the gameplay and puzzles are very ordinary compared to their other efforts.

I'm definitely feeling that, Cycle. It reminds me of Zak McKraken, and it actually makes me pine for the game ending deaths of Sierra titles.

I finally finished Dead Rising on Infinity mode, meaning I survived for 7 days. I've attempted this twice before only for my 360 to freeze right before I hit the fifth day. I'm curious as to why I did it though, I'm not that much of an achievement whore... I guess I really wanted Arthur's boxers.

That mode pissed me off, just because the only real way to succeed is to avoid doing anything the whole time and only kill when you have to, i.e. on an orange juice run. I remember at the time I said it was like Pacman if pacman required you to hide in the jail the whole time. There's no actual incentive to play Dead Rising (that is, slaughter huge amounts of zombies for kicks) when you're playing that mode, and in fact the best strategy is to avoid Dead Rising-like activity. They should have made it so the only way to recoup health is to kill 100 zombies, or somthing similar. It should all tie into the score meter! It doesn't though :(

I finished RE 4!

HIT RATIO: 90%
ENEMIES KILLED: 875
NUMBER OF TIMES KILLED: 51
CLEAR TIME: 18:43'53"

It really did get better again on the island. Game would have been better if the castle was cut out... wish I could skip it in future plays! There were only a couple cool bits in it, like when you're Ashlee and all helpless and STUFF.

Those guys which you have to use the IV scope on were awesome... one of the few enemies that were actually scary and it made the game tense and feel like a survival horror game again. The bit with the helicopter was also awesome and the final boss and jetski sequence were fun. So yeah, despite FREQUENT annoyances, I enjoyed this game enough to finish it. Would have been better with some of the stupid bits cut out and if it was shorter.

Amazing how much I thought of killer 7 while playing it, though.

Also I'm not realy sure what the hell was going on with the story. What did it have to do with Umbrella? I don't know.

So yeah, this game officially doesn't suck.

Awesome. Yeah, the Castle does kinda lull, despite having what I think is the funniest cutscene in the whole game (the midget guy getting the knife in the hand and his subsequent reaction crack me up to no end). And yeah, I thought of Killer7 a lot as well while playing it, but in a way that was good for both games, if that makes sense.

As for the story, I don't know that any official connections have been made, though i kinda suspected as I was playing through that maybe Umbrella's viral research had its start in the same parasite that yielded the plagas? I don't know that this is true though. A friend and I are slowly clearing out the Umbrella chronicles disc (which is both a good and bad game), so if anything turns up in that that ties the games together, I will let you know.

I always thought Umbrella Chronicles looked neat. Is it right to assume most of the criticism it's had thus far is unfair? I mean the House of the Dead games are pretty damn stupid and rudimentary, and they're still a blast. I don't see how it can be much worse than those.

In some ways it's better because it looks really good, there's plenty of guns and lots of things to shoot those guns at that aren't only zombies but in other ways it's much worse like no zombie dismemberment. And Wesker has a voice that is camper than Liberace and Julian Clary on a backwoods camping trip. That's not a con by the way.

Umbrella Chronicles is actually interesting. There aren't as many zombies to shoot as, say, a House of the Dead game, but the game prioritizes critical hitting the zombies. The boss fights are really actually well done, and usually involve a good mix of "shoot this dude before he hits you" ala HotD and "gesture somehow or hit buttons" to avoid attacks. This works pretty well.

In addition, the game wants you to shoot freaking everything: lights, tables, boxes, books, anything. This is how you find new guns, ammo, files (which all have data on the game and such). The game kinda fills in some side stories of what Wesker is doing, and glosses over the unimportant shit in the games to get the general story across.

2 player is pretty odd. You share one life bar, and both of you have to dodge attacks together, but the motions/buttons for dodging are different for each of you, so it can be a bit confusing. Playing with a second player does guarantee at least one guy can swing around a knife to fuck up whatever is coming at you.

I like the game, but I would definitely say only pick it up if someone else is around. Even in the one player only missions, alternating players is nice for fighting some of the more evil fights.

I've started playing through Final Fantasy 6 again. (Damn you Daphaknee!) It's interesting to see the differences between the original and this product, though I'm not sure that I like it as much as the original, audiowise. I'm glad that some of the essential bugs were fixed, though, like the evasion percentage, blindness status, and others. I must admit though, that the blindness bug was very endearing. I liked to have cool shades on my characters all the time. It's also interesting to note that, when you've played through a game several times, there's still little stuff you can find that gives you that satisfaction of doing something clever. For example, in the first part of the game where the mogs help you defend Terra, taking off Mog's gear and putting the shield on Lock, plus the mythril knife that you can steal from the commander there, you've got a very nice set of starting gear for Locke/whoever. Also, learning the dance in the cave. I think it's the only chance you get to learn that dance before the 2nd half of the game. Maybe it's just me but I find little things like that pretty satisfying!

Yeah, it's a mixed bag.

It runs on a modified version of the Neverwinter Nights (Aurora) engine.

Very clunky, and the camera sucks.

Many have alleged that Aurora is poorly coded.

I wish that some Deathsword action was included.

Also the AI is rotten.

More complaints later.

In spite of its myriad problems, I'm enjoying Assassin's Creed. It reminds me a lot of Spider-Man 2, in that the combat is bland, but exploring and running around is fun.

It would have been so much better off as a Batman game.

so i'm about halfway through the witcher and, well, it turned into a dating sim.

i'm more impressed with the emergent theme of "neutrality is impossible" however. i'm not sure where this is going, but i hope it goes somewhere.

It's so fucked up how every time you make it with a woman the game marks it off in your pokedex and you get a trading card. It's about the most casually mysogynistic thing I've ever seen in a game.

THEN AGAIN, they should totally do it in the next James Bond game.
