Listening to that anecdote about "The Bullshitters" in the AB review of King of Fighters Maximum Impact 2 recently got me thinking about some bullshit supposed cheat codes that I'd often find online in my younger, more naive days on the internet. Also at a time when it seemed like the video game related internet was just a younger and more naive place in general. Many of these centered around the supposed existence of "Pokegods", but they were around for just abut every game I owned at the time. As unbelievable as they were, I thought they were intriguing to no end and tried a lot of the simpler ones only to of course realize that they were fake.

I figured I'd make a thread to reminisce about a few that I remembered. Feel free to share ones you guys remember and all that.

Here are some Pokemon ones I remember seeing different variations of:

Prof Oak's Tired of Taking You to the Hall of Fame
(Never attempted this one because it was too tedious sounding)

There were several variations of a code for the Pokegods that revolved around beating the Elite 4 a ridiculous number of times without saving, turning the game off, healing your pokemon, etc.. After beating them x number of times Prof. Oak's usual dialouge would be replaced with "I'm getting tired of this" and he'd then leave you to walk freely in the hall of fame room. Once in that room, by walking left or right just a bit off of the visible screen space you'd normally be in with Oak, you'll find a door.

That's where some variations of the story come in. In one version I remember reading that you'd end up in an island where people would trade with you for these legendary Pokegods. There was another, and far more elaborate, version where you were taken to a volcanic island that was going to erupt in x number of minutes, and you were responsible for leaving the island before your time expired or else your file would get erased or something. On this island were different patches of grass and in each one you had a chance of encountering a Pokegod. In particular I think there was supposed to be a 2x2 square of white grass with Mew in it while all the other made up ones, like Venutoise, were in larger patches.

Discovery of Pikablue (aka: pre-release Maril sprites)
(I tried the one I discuss in detail)

There were about 1000 different stories going around about this. There's one I remember standing out though because it was easier to attempt than the rest. You needed to have all 150 Pokemon (which I had) and a specific party that I can't remember for the life of me, but I know wasn't too hard to assemble. After meeting the aforementioned requirements you had to equip the item finder and surf around that body of water leading to the Unknown Dungeon while using it repeatedly. After using it 100 times, a message would come out of no where, telling you that a new Pokemon has been discovered on Cinnabar Island, Go there, surf around in that glitched coast Missingno resided in, and you'd get attacked by a Pikablue.

...I never got that message Confused

Togepi egg in Red and Blue version's Mount Moon!?
(I tried one of these, but I can't remember the details now)

I can't remember the details to any of them right now, but there were a lot that said you'd find a Togepi egg in a specific area of Mount Moon after fulfilling certain requirements.

Weird Truck next to the SS Anne
(I tried a few variations of this)

FACT: There is a small truck parked just to the right of the visible screen space in the docking bay of the SS Anne. To find this truck simply prevent the ship from leaving by exiting it via escape rope as opposed to the conventional method of walking out the door and having it leave without you. After getting the surf HM in the Safari Zone, go back to that docking bay area and surf over to the stretch of land to the right of that boardwalk you're usually limited to. There you'll see a 2-tile long truck. I think it's the only automobile in the game, but it's typically hidden from the player and serves no purpose.

Video of the truck: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFn9pqOYvus

BULLSHIT: Doing a series of weird events and talking to an old man in the Casino (I forgot its actual name, but you should know what I'm referring to since there's only one gambling location in the game) will cause this man to give you a key for this truck. Go back to the truck, examine the door, and OMG! There's a pokeball inside there with a Mew in it!

A more popular version of the story also said that you could move the truck with strength and find the Mew underneath it.

-----

Well that's all I really feel like talking about for now. I'll update with some more from Pokemon and maybe a few from some other games later.

God I remember that fucking truck and the rumors surrounding it. To this day I don't understand its function in the game. I also remember some other rumors about pokemon red/blue, namely obtaining Flareon, though think that may have been one of the ones involving beating the Elite 4 100 times or whatever.

The only one I remember is resurrecting General Leo.

Go to dinosaur island, kill 4,000 dinosaurs until a gold ones appears, etc.

I faintly remember a complicaed "ressurect Aerith" scenario that required getting swallowed by the Midgar Zolom, which is of course impossible.

I had a friend who was a chronic liar. Based on some silly internet rumors, he told me that, if you bring one of every car to your garage and gather every secret package in GTA3, you will unlock a garage that holds every car. He did it, but his memory card got erased somehow. Of course. Then he did it again, but the game broke. He tried to find corroborating evidence for me online, but all he could gather was some stupid all-caps forum posts.

I think he has a kid now.

Gen's actually from SF1, as well as Birdie and Eagle.

When I was 7 some kid at school told me, because he thought I'd find it funny, that the music for Super Mario Land on the game boy went 'doo, doo-doo-doo! doo-doo doo-doo doo-doo doo doo doo doo! doo doo doo doo, doo, doo-doo-doo-doo! doo doo!' And I said 'and when you walk to the left, can you see little men with saxophones playing the music?' and he thought for a second before saying '...yeah!!' I was like 22 when I finally discovered this wasn't true.

i was about fourteen when final fantasy 7 came out and i spent a good amount of study halls in the library reading gamefaqs. although i've forgotten most of them, there was an endless supply of bizarre rumors and theories and secret materias and hidden bosses that you could only find by saving in slot eleven a hundred times and rebooting with the game disc upside down and a fish in your pants leg. the only one that i still recall is when one guy claimed that somewhere on the world map was a mountain that looked like all the others, but if you checked it on disc 3 after fighting ruby weapon and emerald weapon, would come alive and fight you. as brown weapon, no less.

in the completely opposite direction, as i was a kid i never made it to the ice world four in super mario bros. 2. when a friend that was given to embellishing his stories about games told me that you pulled up this one weed and it totally turned into a rocketship that you rode into the sky, i didn't believe a word of it and called him a liar. i remember it made him really upset. years later i actually got to that part, immediately remembered this event and suddenly felt like a tremendous ass.

The Man on the Roof has a Present for You!

I can't really remember the details, but there were a few that said if you did all sorts of save tricks, and then did that maneuver on Cinnabar to see that glitched old man sprote on top of the gym, he'd walk down and give you a Mew.

Get the Triforce in OoT!?

There are a lot of crazy versions of this it seems, but most of them require you to have acquired everything in the game without dying. After that prerequisite is met, they're all pretty random, but I recall a lot of them having to do with Lake Hylia. I was unable to get the last upgrades for both the deku nut and sticks due to that glitch I mentioned in the derailed intro thread, so I never attempted these.

I found this searching around just now: http://internal.tbi.net/~max/ztrifoce.htm

Photoshopped or not, it's a cool image.

It's so dumb that people are still hanging onto that 'WHERES TEH TRIFORCE' shit. It doesn't even make any sense in the context of the game, since we learn Link, Zelda and Ganon each possess a piece of the Triforce IN THEIR HEARTZ or some shit, and then Ganon gets banished to another dimension. Like the game shows you quite explicitly where each piece is.

There are a few games with hidden or unused sprites or maps that turn into rumors of larger things. In OoT, it's the Light Temple. (It also turns out Fox's Arwing is in the game, but I've never seen any rumors that there's a way to get it to appear normally.) In GTA3, the ghost town became a place you could actually land if you learned how to fly the plane, and it had every car in the game, etc. Was there ever a rumor about Crocomire in Metroid: Zero Mission? His sprite's in the rom.

Protip: Due to the awesomeness that is real time cutscenes, there are really 2 Triforces!!! One above the Temple of Time, and the other above Zelda's room! O_O

(I'm actually not sure of that as I've only used levitate to fly up to the Temple of Time one, but just thinking about it logically, there should be one around Zelda's room too since you see the Triforce in a cutscene there as well.)

My mum has french students staying in their house, and sometimes they're there at the same time as me which is nice because sometimes we share common interests, like music, videogames, MY DICK IN THEIR MOUTH LOLOLOLLOLOLOLOLOL

(That last one was a joke one)

One french kid told me he was playing through OoT and he had scoured ever single inch of the game looking for the triforce and he was really going to find it and did I have any ideas on where to find it?!?!?!?

I had some ideas. He didn't like them so much. Remember your face when you found out Santa Claus didn't exist? Yeah.

My father banned me from my super sweet AOL screename for awhile (Dr Andonuts) in my youth (bout...7-9 years I'd say) for sending a random user who I'd seen in a chat room a list of fake Goldeneye cheats, all of which involved nudity or sex in them (ie Nude Natalya, etc. etc.).

Ask Dess. It's a platform game for the SNES where you play a little girl with a fishing rod, which acts as a grappling hook. It's genius because you have all the techniques needed to complete the game from the very start, but actually mastering all of them as a player takes a lot of skill and practise. Players who have mastered all the techniques can complete the game in 4 minutes.

Play the game and complete a few levels, and then watch one of the speedruns to see all the shit they do that you'll never even consider were possible, and you'll get a sense of how clever it is.
