|
|
When it comes to first person shooters, I'm a compulsive light shooter. If I see a light bulb, I shoot it. In Perfect Dark I used to add an imaginary "shoot out every light fixture" second to last objective to every stage I could. Fast forward to the 360 and PS3 though, and despite the overall look of the games being amazing, I all too often find myself emptying entire clips on light bulbs with no effect. I find that just a bit unnerving and inexcusable. In no way, shape, or form (with the exception of sheer fun factor) should we see our behemoth games of today being shown up a modified version of the Goldeneye engine. Yet, here they are lacking something as obvious as destructible light bulbs. Seriously, the only new game I can think of atm that allowed you to shoot out any light was The Darkness, but that was probably just due to the fact that it was a necessary game mechanic.
Now going back to the title of the thread, I was just wondering if the magical Crytek engine allowed you to shoot out any light in the game. Or perhaps if it's like some current-gen games where some lights are invincible and others aren't, are a majority of them destructible at least?
Feel free to just generally discuss light bulbs in gaming ITT as well. |

There's a light bulb in Super Mario World just before you fight Bowser. You can switch it on and off. It's neat. It doesn't appear anywhere else in the game. |

The Richard Pryor routine when he talks about shooting his car's tires out is one of my favorites! |

Torches are like medieval lightbulbs and Rise Of The Triad is full of them. You even get an end of stage bonus if you destroy them all. And because the discerning evil cult is the evil cult that keeps up with the times there are more modern lighting fixtures to shoot as well. I guess flaming skeletons are also like torches and those are special because you make them yourself... with weapons! _________________

dhex, if you still have the game installed, think you could boot it up just to test light bulbs real quick? Maybe make a stage in the map editor that has a ceiling full of light fixtures and see if you can shoot them all out? |

Unfortunately I only have a 360 though (and even that's not with me atm due to RRoD), and Butcher's Bay isn't B/C. In the even that it is made B/C though, my gf said she'd give me her's.

Dang, oh well. Just keep the light bulb thing in mind next time you feel like playing a normal mission in the game or something I guess. They're probably destructible, but it would say quite a lot if they weren't. |

honestly, i don't remember seeing any lightbulbs anywhere in crysis. there are standing lamps in some areas, but i don't remember if they can be destroyed or not.
i was actually playing a bit last night and damn it holds up under scrutiny real good. damn. _________________

you could shoot out any light source in escape from butcher bay.
another starbreeze game where it was tied to a game mechanic.
they even gave you a tazer-gun-thing that which primary function was to kill light.
it had infinite ammo.
that what i did all throughout the game. i wouldnt engage anybody until the entire area was pitch black.
cant wait to do it again in the remake.
but yes, agreed, its absolutely unacceptable in a game like crysis. _________________ you cant spell selfish without fish |

I remember being annoyed that I couldn't shoot apart a chess set in Call of Duty 4. Then again, maybe it's one of those 'you can't do it because (your character) Soap McTavish wouldn't do it' things. |

Is it because you're outside all the time or something? I know very little about the game. Just brought it up because it's probably the most advanced FPS around right now.

Oh man, I remember that damn chess set. And yeah, it pissed me off too. |

It just felt like they'd missed a trick, especially since you're fighting the Russians who the chess set seems to symbolise. Maybe that's precisely why they didn't let you shoot it apart. |

i would think so, yes. also all the soldiers have flashlights on their guns at night so i would probably be redundant.
also you can punch buildings apart! _________________

Is the game awesome enough to let you shoot out the light in their flash lights? |

Meh, I'd rather spot a lone guard walking around with a gun mounted flashlight, take cover in some bushes, take careful aim and shoot out that light with a silenced pistol, watch him get all confused, sneak around behind him, then beat him down with some melee action. |

i deal in concrete reality, personally. | The concrete reality of punching buildings apart that is. What about headlights on jeeps and other vehicles? I'm thinking of Bill Murray in the Ragged Edge breaking all the glass out of his ambulance so there won't be any reflective surfaces to gleam in the light. _________________ Signature:

tires and windows, yes. headlights? i don't know if i'd even seen vehicles with their headlights on. i will keep an eye out.

it's still incredibly impressive. shooting out tires is something that's been a long time coming.
i think there's a part with jeeps at night later on, iirc - i will check again there. _________________

well well well
yup you can shoot out headlights on jeeps. the only other lights were these tower lights, caged, that couldn't be shot out.
edit: and the tower lights could be destroyed with a mounted gun!
so throw your wiis and their racist mascots into cleansing the fire and bow down to crysis _________________

fun with physics i had tonight: (in the harbor for those in the know)
- shot my way through the glass ceiling of a warehouse before jumping through said ceiling while shooting for no real good reason.
- climbed my way up to the very top of a ship, then jumped my way to the very top top top bit of radar. jumped off, landing on some thing (missile battery) which then fell off its mount and tossed me to my death several stories below.
- running through an accidental ambush i hear a jeep pulling up on my left as i break through a narrow crate corridor to the strip near the water. i shoot wildly, blowing out a tire; the driver swerves left, overcompensates and drives right into the ocean.
- jumped my way to the very top of an otherwise locked warehouse, surveyed the ground and wiped out all of my targets. then in an attempt to jump across to some other perch when the helicopter showed up i sort of missed and died. again.
finally, i climbed to the very top of the tallest structure i've seen in the game beyond mt. foreshadowing and enjoyed the view. sun reflecting off the waves, patrol boats lazily circling the harbor, soldiers frantically yelling in korean (that .cfg edit is absolutely recommended, btw, and quite simple), laser sights flicking hither and yon. _________________

the one to make them talk all korean and shit.
http://www.tweakguides.com/Crysis_8.html
Quote: | Diff_
There are four files starting with diff_ under your \Program Files\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis\Game\Config\ directory. Each one corresponds to the in-game difficulty setting of the same name, and note that diff_bauer is the file for Delta difficulty in the game. These files hold the various parameters which are affected when you alter the game difficulty. For example if you compare diff_easy with diff_bauer, you will see the variable g_playerSuitArmorModeHealthRegenTime = 8 in the easy file, while the same variable has a value = 25 in the Delta (Bauer) file. This means that to regenerate your health back to 100% takes roughly 3 times longer when in Armor mode at Delta difficulty compared to Easy difficulty.
To begin with, find the difficulty file corresponding to your in-game difficulty setting, and then you can alter the parameters to better suit the particular challenge you're after. One particular difficulty aspect which is more related to atmosphere than difficulty in my opinion is the ai_UseAlternativeReadability variable. When set to 1, it forces the Korean soldiers to speak English, which can be quite unrealistic. You can set this to 0 to force the Koreans to speak Korean, something which normally only happens at the Delta difficulty level. Check the rest of the commands in the Advanced Tweaking section for more details of what the other settings here do. Note that some of these difficulty settings are tied to saved games. For example if you change ai_UseAlternativeReadability and then load up a saved game, it will revert back to its old value as stored in that saved game. In that case, you must alter the variable then save the game again to store the new setting. |
