This just in: "Juno" is amazing and also suprisingly lovably feel-good!

I like a few of his movies, but most are style over substance and end up being dissapointing.

Ed Wood?

He hasn't done much of real import since then.

I watched the Charlton Heston version a few weeks ago. (Omega Man)

Have you seen that one?

How do the two compare?

Trailer for the Moses version.

The 70s/manson thing in Heston's version was amusing but also a bit lame.

Topical perhaps.

i have not, though from the trailer i'm going to venture a guess that I Am Legend is, generally speaking, better and not simply through superior effects.

This just in: Juno made me want to punch children.

I Am Legend is apparently actually quite good. That is, until the ending comes round and they turn it into some ACCEPT CHRIST nonsense with survivors instead of the book's brilliant conclusion.

When her water breaks she screams "THUNDERCATS ARE GO!" I'm not even kidding.

Yeah Juno is pretty great if you're okay with falling in love a least a little with a fictional character. It just abouts ties with No Country for Old Men for best of the year with me.

Napolean Dynamite is terribly boring yeah. And I don't think that's "the point" of it, either.

I Am Legend is an adaptation of The Omega Man rather than of the book. Both kind of suck with camp being the saving grace of the latter.

While watching the Omega Man I kept expecting a Monkees chase sequence.

That's such a weird movie. It's so twee and 50's, and you're like what the hell are the Ramones doing in this movie. Also you get the distinct impression that the lead actress does not actually find Joey Ramone attractive.

Also Joey Ramone only eats pizza and his manager forces him to eat vitamin supplements when they're on the road?? You have to assume that is actually true because they can't have put it in for comic effect.

Granted, The Ramones just recycled twee 50's rock and roll but yeah, it is really twee and 50's.

Quote:

They are in there because they couldn't get Cheap Trick. There were a few others that were suggested for the film like Devo and Van Halen, even Todd Rundgren was supposed to be in there but nothing came of that.

Quote:

I don't think anyone finds Joey Ramone attractive. He looks too much like a buzzard, in a leather jacket. Also, Dee Dee can't act. He had, like, one line in the movie and he couldn't even get that right so they had to cut it down to "Hey, pizza!".

And then they blow up the school whilst playing the title song, this film has a little of everything if everything means rock and roll, total lame-o authority figures and explosions.

Any movie is better if Devo is in it. I really wonder how that would have worked out. Not a single member of Devo is sexually attractive at all, with even them making jokes about it, so I can't imagine very many actresses being able to fake it.

"Oh Mark, you are so dreamy!"

The film is really quite dumb, if it'd had a better script I'm sure they'd have had no problem getting Todd Rundgren and Cheap Trick and Devo. I'm still impressed they got the Ramones!

Also I heard the producers wanted to make the film 'Disco High School' but the director talked them down because 'DISCO SUCKS'. You know, 'Disco High School' would probably have gone down pretty well in the UK.

I got some box in the mail and it had a film in it.

It was called Expect to Die.

It was terribly awesome. The director/producer/writer was also the main actor.

Thank you cycle.

That would make the movie all the better, but the guy had what seemed like an Italian accent, not an Aussie one.

When I first watched that movie I thought it was from the 80's, but then I discovered it was made in the year 2000 and something and decided it must be some kind of deranged tribute to bad 80's movies. I love how the game is stored on two floopy disks and... well man, there is so much to love about how bad that movie is.

The company that did the special effects are actually a z-grade game company. I owned a couple of their games which I bought out the dollar bin years ago.

The other movie I sent you is also interesting. Do you remember the company Digital Pictures? They released a bunch of FMV "interactive movies" on the Sega CD and what not back in the day, Sketchpanic is probably a big fan of their work. ANYWAY, what this movie is, is a bunch of scenes from their different games, with a new movie filmed to fill in the gaps and tie the scenes together. It's pretty funny, some of the footage from their earlier games looks like it was recorded off VHS tapes, the change in quality is so obvious. A friend of mine actually owned one of the games...

Those other DVDs I sent you are worth watching too, Dess can vouch for them!

Actually it seemed more like an early/mid nineties softcore porn on Cinemax more than anything I've seen from the 80's.

It's what you used to watch scrambled in the early morning because your parents wouldn't pay for premium movie channels. And every now and then you'd imagine you could spot a green, distorted boob.

I watched Tron last night.

Matrix in 1982.

The computer usage stuff was pre-GUI. And phoney even for keyboard paradigm.

Filming at Lawrence Livermore was a good call.

Cindy Morgan looked like a cross between Kim Cattrall and Michelle Pfieffer.
With big glasses.

Mmmmmm.

On the sleeve: "Mixing Alice in Wonderland, Star Wars, Ben Hur and German Expressionism, Tron amazes".

Probably better with chemicals.

I want to watch TRON again!

I once saw a pretty weird deleted scene from that film where TRON had it off with a Byte Hooker or something. It was good.

Apparently, the game is quite good (Tron 2.0, not the arcade game, because everyone knows that one is fun times already) With Marathon references too!

I saw Sunshine tonight. The last act was really just ... ugh. What? I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone, but holy shit that was dumb. I'm not talking dumb as in 'What? Comms shouldn't rotate! That makes it harder to communicate!' dumb, but dumb in a general 'Fuck this movie!' dumb. I was really looking forward to seeing this too.

If you liked it as a kid it's still pretty good, honestly.

I also use to have a friend who had a Tron arcade cabinet in his garage that his dad picked up for cheap. That set me on my quest to own real arcade cabinets and I had two before I was 21. I blame Tron.

I've always wanted my own arcade cabinent... don't know what game I'd get though.

Also, Tron 2.0 is pretty swell at first, but it gets tedious about half-way through. I find this to be the case for most Monolith games.

Things you need:
1. A much bigger (HD)TV
2. A much bigger surround sound setup
3. MORE VOLUME

aka: a movie theater.

i have concluded that elektra blows chunks.

the messengers is really slow and plodding. it'd be a lot better if it were, say, an episode of The Outer Limits.

decasia is pretty cool, but i rented it knowing firsthand that it's basically a 67-minute version of the tape from ringu.

Funny, that's the same as the first draft of Kind Hearts and Coronets.

I'm looking at clips of Flesh Gordon on Youtube! It has really good Ray Harryhausen-style animation. I also like the way Emporer Wang says lines like 'I'm going to burn your fucking planet to a fucking crisp!' It's so direct and to the point.

Watched it 2 weeks ago.

What wonderful cheese.

Very similar to Barbarella.

Last night I watched Devil's Playground. Was interesting, but I thought it would be more of a wandering documentary.

I was impressed how rapidly those Amish kids figured everything out.

Cellphones, cars, sex/drugs/rocknroll, etc.

It was nifty.

I was also amused by the cracker thing. They are rural, not suburban or urban.
So the males in Rumspringa go for the wigger look and the redneck look, sometimes both.

I wonder what Rumspringa was like in the 60's/70's.
