Like the Google aesthetics of the title? It's like we have virtually infinite taste in games!

Alright, the purpose of this thread is not serious. It's totally arbitrary. It isn't going to be definitive or accurate or maybe even representative. But I like year-end lists and I like compiling things. Plus, they're a neat way to reflect back on the year that was. We'll be like a Mirror Shield, but even more gimmicky!

Just as with any good arbitrary activity, there are rules here, and strict ones. Not following the rules will result in castigation, and hopefully ostracization.

RULES
1. Each contributor lists FOUR [4] games. There are no also-rans. No ties. No honorable mentions. Any posts with excess games listed will not count during tabulation.
2. The criteria for each contributor's choices are: a) game originally released in 2007 (in whatever region). Major release, vc/psn/xbla, indie, snake v. apple, whatever; b) game fits individual contributor's definition of "best." That's right, no illusion of objectivity here. You can pick a game just to help it out, or to screw with the compiled list; c) game has been played by contributor. Honor system, folks.
3. Rank your games from 1-4. Your top-ranked game will receive 4 pts, your lowest-ranked game will receive 1 pt. '1' is the designation for the top-ranked game, with '4' the designation for the lowest.
4. I will total up the list every 4-5 days so that we can see what our list is looking like.
5. If you want to change your list after it's posted, just say so and post a new list.

So let's get started! I'll go first.

Sound good?

Oh, and The Orange Box is NOT 1 game. It has 3 possible choices.

Pac-Man C.E. does get an honorable mention from me BTW. It's a solid choice, it's just that 4 is ... so few!

Honorable Mention: Pacman C.E. (haven't played it)

Just didn't find Mario Galaxy that exciting, that's all. Good game though, most polished thing I've seen in ages and the controls were amazing, but I guess I've just moved on?

I have a very simple litmus test for whether I think a given Mario game makes me happy or not:

Is it fun to move?

Super Mario Brothers passes. Mario 3 passes. Super Mario World passes. Mario 64 passes with flying colors. Mario Sunshine passes.

Mario Vs. Donkey Kong doesn't pass. New Super Mario Brothers doesn't really pass, either. Mario 64 on Nintendo DS flunks hard. Super Paper Mario doesn't pass. (Paper Mario 1 and 2 dropped the course before grades were assigned. Mario and Luigi, however, got a solid A.) Mario Galaxy doesn't pass.

Anyway. My list looks like this:

1. Portal
2. Kororinpa
3. Team Fortress 2
4. Picross DS

If I had a fifth slot, I'd give it to Halo 3's replay mode.

There are a lot of things I might put on the list. Trying to limit this to things I've spent a good deal of time playing, though, and that really stood out to me. I haven't bought (therefore haven't played) many games this year, since, you know, money. What I have played, I've mostly played in bursts here and there.

1. Uncharted
2. Ratchet and Clank Future
3. Call of Duty 4
4. Portal

I really really want to put skate on this list every time someone asks for the top 10 but it just doesn't fit. Also the Darkness because I never shut up about it but it also doesn't fit. Also Persona 3.

What, not even when you're jumping around the little flying saucers? It's tremendous fun. Don't just judge it by comparing it to Mario 64. It's different.

1. Crackdown
2. Mario Galaxies
3. Bioshock
4. Halo 3

This was a tough list, looking at my "media consumed log", a few of my favorites were actually '06 games I got late, like Twilight Princess and Chibi-Robo.

Surprised Crackdown isn't getting more love.

Portal would probably be there if I had played it.

Wes, my parade is going to be really soggy if you keep up that attitude.

This is supposed to be arbitrarily brutal about exclusion! You don't have to feel guilty about not having enough spots! No one has enough spots! Moderation was kind of the point.

Can't you just tell people that 5-10 don't actually count? Or if you want it to be arbitrarily brutal you can tell people that Portal doesn't count.

wes, this is just like when anyone asks you what a good game for [system] is and you say 46 games afterwards.

but fine, 5-10 don't count if you want to list them. Only the first 4 do.

hey the three of you who listed Uncharted: would someone write about it in the games i'm playing thread? I'm very curious.

It's interesting that 5 of the top 10 so far are PC games (basically).

Dhex: this video is awesome.

1. Crackdown
2. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
3. Portal
4. Bishock

Of course, no. 1 should be Dwarf Fortress, except that as a constantly updating piece of software that hasn't even hit alpha yet, it hasn't really been released and while the massive update that came out late this year was certainly akin to a "new release", I couldn't really justify putting it on the list. It's in my heart though.

It's interesting that you two haven't got a room in a motel, had a huge argument where you ended up uncomfortably close to each other, then spontaneously embraced and had mad, frantic sex, for Christ's sake.

I got portal. New list:

1. Crackdown
2. Mario Galaxies
3. Portal
4. Bioshock

Bioshock really is there just because of the ambience; come to think of it the "loot every corpse for items" mechanic was annoying.

Admitedly I haven't played Portal that much yet; but based on writing and my fondness for Norbacular Drop I think its place is pretty secure.

I think I may have played some games, but I don't quite recall what they are. Been PC-less since April now.

1. Every Extend Extra (wikipediasez the EU and Australia got it this year. I got it this year too.)
2. S.T.A.L.K.E.R., even though I feel like it's the one that killed the computer.
3. Mario Galaxy
4. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (haven't actually played it yet, but I'm assuming it's the same as the gamecube one so that's fine)

It's interesting that 3 of those 5 wouldn't be on the list at all if they hadn't been released on Xbox also.

Does that invalidate my statement suddenly, or are you just being a pouty baby?

Hey, 13 of the top 25 are Xbox Games! That's pretty neat.

I do feel like if more people had played Uncharted it could have scored even higher. Part of this has to do with the fact that it's on the PS3, but a lot of it lies with the reviews. Everyone reviewed it with 80-90ish ratings (except for Play, who gave it a 10!) and now they're getting to the end-of-the-year voting and giving it PS3 GOTY. It's sort of fucked up.

When was the last time Play didn't hand out a 10?

Hey man, Halverson might gush a lot, but there are a lot of great games that would have flown under my radar had it not been for one of his reviews. His tastes are a lot more in line with mine than most. He's pretty much the only reviewer I can think of who liked Gunvalkyrie, Heavenly Sword, Billy Hatcher, and PSP Ghouls and Ghosts. He also liked Sonic 360, which I'll never understand but I'm glad I didn't miss out on those other games!
