I have the greatest book...
Free (and almost free) Software for the Macintosh

it was an inspiration for writing little toys on the PalmPilot.

Early Palm and early Mac had many similarities.

This is awesome! Since I grew up with PCs, I have had very little exposure to Mac games at all. The variety of visual styles in these screenshots is really impressive! But I do know a few of these:



I distinctly remember having a great time with this game on some public computer somewhere. I think in my elementary or jr. high school? I feel like it's called Spin Doctor. What is it?



Oh my god. This is immediately recognizable to me, yet I have no idea what it is. I can almost hear it. Like, the fucking swab button on the dash right there--I want to press it so badly. I remember everything here. Please, please identify this for me.



I've played this! I don't know how or when, but I have!



Oh wow. Long ago, my mother worked in a library, and I used to kill time there by playing this on a Mac they had. I loved this game. Please tell me what it's called!

Spin Doctor, Cosmic Osmo, Ingmar's Skiiing Game (right?), and Spectre (this one is Spectre VR, I think). The former and the latter ended up as pre-loads a lot.

The above is correct! Spectre VR was pre-loaded on our first macintosh. I spent many hours with that game! Like others in this thread, I wish I had the chance to actually network some of these games.

I've actually been contacting alot of people behind these games, most of whom sadly have left the game industry. I've been thinking of forming some kind of article around it, but I haven't got a solid idea yet... plus I have a bunch of other ones I need to finish.

It was actually a kind of way to make up for never paying for their games! I was young and had no money, but I spent so much time playing their games that years later I decided to track down all my favourites and let them know how much I enjoyed their work, and in some cases sending along some cash or some such (most politely decline though) and we end up having a conversation about the good ol' days of mac gaming and some such. It's been pretty great.

That's actually based on an older black & white mac game called Camel. They're basically the same thing, except Desert Trek added colour. It was so damn addictive, I played it constantly. I don't think any ports exist, but you could emulate it easily.

Spectre VR.
Too few tank games in the world so it's said that I couldn't immediately remember the name of this one.

I had it for PC, but man I was jealous of my friend and his Mac at CWRU were they had Fiber in all the rooms! Real Internet without a modem. In 1992-3, that was the shizzle!

Ahh, that makes sense. I just remembered both of those screens. I use to play TONS of crappy PC games in the 90's. There was this one that was basically an interactive movie that had about a dozen outcomes (and took place in space) and I played it enough to get all of them. When I decided which one I liked best I sat the family around the PC so that I could present the game to them like a movie and they enjoyed it well enough. I wish I could remember what game it was. I think the only thing I remember is that red was a prominent color throughout.

This is really great cycle. There are a ridiculous number of games here that I loved, but had forgotten. Did you ever play Hellcats?

I've no idea, I left the mac scene around the time iMacs and OSX were being introduced (never had either myself, performa and os8 for the win!). I hear the mac game scene has pretty much turned to shit since them too, which is odd considering they are doing much better these days in the market.

I never played Hellcats but I know it inspired one of my favourite mac games! (Avara).

re-organised the thread, posted what i and many others consider to be true classics on the first page, posted ones i and many others remember fondly on the second page, but aren't exactly in the same league.

i'll probably expand on that method in my next installment. we dont have any 56kers here, do we?

Ingemaar's Skiing Game is fantastic. I wasted so much time playing that and his Sokoban port my freshman year of college. That, and Angband.

I talked to him a few times over e-mails back when I played his games, he was a really great guy and I loved almost all his games. His Sprite Animation Toolkit helped SO many other mac sharware authors, too. Plus, he released an annual christmas game each year!

Sadly, he seems to have left the games industry. He hasn't even made a christmas game for a few years. Last game he was working on was a non-violent 3D game but he scrapped it due to the tech being too out dated.

is there some way you can hack into aol's software archive or something like that? I'd (almost?) pay money for someone to put everything from 1992-1998 on three dvds and send it over here

I missed out on a lot of black and white games because it seemed like that they almost never worked or ran too fast on our family's performa (and later, our imac dvse)

My favorites are the Brett Crain games, they always had an eye for smooth-running, physics-based gameplay. There are two I can no longer find: a real time strategy game that let you choose automated behavior for your units (or let you control one individually) that had a host terrains that had all sorts of effects on your units (and it also had an included map maker). It was "published" by Gaz Software, a group I can only find at http://www.electric-games.com/gc/g/gc-gaz.html . I think I have invented my memories of trying out Ketos, and Igneon doesn't even exist afaik. It uses Offroading's engine.

And there was also a game in which you swung on vines whilst running from a wall of sludge.

I can still find a mention of Offroading (but no download link), which is an awesome two-player rc pro-am type game that lets you slide around mud and oil. If you set a ramp the wrong way in the track maker you could get hangtime that lasted for like 6 seconds. The Macintosh Garden has Cyber Fighters and Super Ships II, both of which are nice (for what they are. actually Super ships is pretty great).

Cobra Gunship is my favorite helicopter game (I don't think a better one even exists)

I don't think I've played those Brett Crain games you mention!

But yeah, Cobra Gunship was flippin' sweet! I played that so much in the day. By far the best Choplifter style game I've played (unless you count Armor Alley).

I found Explore while looking for a PC port of Desert Trek. Looked interesting! Unfortunately, I no longer have a mac.

There is this one HL server that has every game you could possibly want (mostly) but it's down like 90% of the time. I need to download everything off it one month, and back it all up.

Ryan, that Void Ruins shot was from A Mess O' Trouble, one of the Ray's Maze games. They were these cool adventure games where there were all these little worlds, linked by portals you had to find. So you could go from an abandoned mine, to an alien holiday resort, to a steampunk world. I never really got anywhere in the game, but it was just fun exploring all the different worlds and meeting strange characters.

I forget what the engine was called that let you create those games. I had made a couple myself when I was in middle school that were your basic "run around in a dungeon and kill things games". In lieu of leveling, they had a series of amulets that would grant you increasing power so that you could go deeper and kill more dangerous monsters. Kind of like an adventure-game version of Moria.

agreed. the palette is just too big and the coloring too sloppy. suddenly they had all these colors and no idea what to do with all of them! the original, though, is perfect for the black and white monitors it was designed for.

i think cyan's goal-less here-is-stuff-you-can-tinker-with approach to children's software is probably the best. it certainly seems more effective than all those kid's point-and-click adventure games. which, though their hearts may be in the right place, are point-and-click adventure games.

cosmic osmo's going to be on gametap next week. i wonder if it'll be a wonky recolored version.

Trying to pin down the early Mac, and then Mac Color look...
for the latter I guess the hallmark was high resolution, relatively low color depth.
really low rez, high color depth is random atari, low both is like, I dunno, EGA.

cosmic osmo's on gametap. it's the original, gorgeous two colors at the original resolution. i'm glad.

i think the cyan approach to educational software is far better than the humongous approach. the typical collect-the-four-arbitrary-whatsits of traditional adventure game design evoke the authoritarian nature of compulsory schooling. in cyan's model, children (players) are not taught but are allowed to learn. the energy and investment comes from the child, inviting her to own her own learning experience.

and besides, collecting arbitrary whatsits is bad design for adults, so how much worse must it be for children?

their games also really allowed kids to feed their curious and inquistive nature, thanks to all the exploration and experimenting they could do without anything holding them back (in fact, the cyan brothers referred to these titles as "explortainment") but i think the greatest thing these titles did was allow children to be creative, something most educational titles avoid. Spelunx, for example, was pretty much a collection of creative tools tied together in an interactive, explorable world. brilliant.

have we had an educational games thread? i made one back on ic, i think... man that must have been a long time ago.

Somebody remind me what this game was. I remember it being somewhat like early Wizardry/Bard's Tale, only better*.

ETA: I went back and read the first page and lo, this is a stupid post because peeps had already worked it out. I won't delete this post though, because Citadel was awesome.

ETA: I had about one-third of these games, usually leeched off of BMUG (Berkeley Macintosh Users Group) since I had a friend who was a member.
