This is a plug! That's cool, right? Of course it is.

I have a new job with a new website, called Eegra. The concept is, in a nutshell, smart and funny content, for cool, smart guys and girls who like videogames but aren't ANGRY NERDS about it. So I think there's a lot of overlap between our thing and The Gamer's Quarter's thing.

Here is the website, and here is our, I guess, 'statement of purpose'.

If I might suggest some starting points...

We want to establish friendly relationships with other websites and publications that we feel share our outlook to some degree, which, as I said, certainly includes The Gamer's Quarter. So please don't think of Eegra as this 'other thing'. We're just another voice in the ongoing cultural dialogue about videogames. We're not gonna be like, "THIS IS THE ONLY WEBSITE; DO NOT VISIT OTHER WEBSITES; WE HAVE ASSIMILATED AND CATEGORISED ALL INFORMATION ABOUT VIDEOGAMES" and shit.

ALSO! This is the good bit. Once the company has some dollars coming in, we are going to get a freelance budget! I don't know when (or how much), but once we do, I personally would love to get some TGQ-type people on board. So please, have a browse of Eegra, and if it seems like the sort of thing you'd like to be involved in, please LET ME KNOW. You can email me, or say something in this thread, or whatever.

Okay, that's all. Thanks for readin'. Feel free to, you know, DISCUSS. I'd love to know what you guys think.

Oh, and we have forums too! If you're the type of person who posts on multiple forums, we'd love to have you.

I like it. I like it a lot.

Consider yourself bookmarked, and such.

Alright, so! Discussion. Commentary. Yes.

I don't really get it.

Maybe I'm looking too hard. Maybe I'm up too late to be trying to make this sort of evaluation. Whatever the reason, Eegra isn't gelling for me. I understand the desire to distance yourself from pretension and cynicism and nerd rage and such, but actually saying as much with content like yours (to say nothing of your tagline) feels really insincere.

That sounds harsher than I intended.

It's an interesting start, certainly, even if your strategy mystifies me. This feels very much like a spiritual successor to the Gaming Intelligence Agency. I'm curious to see how you'll develop.

Thanks for your thoughts, Mr Wrong, though I'm not sure I totally understand them. But I'll go ahead and respond anyway.

It's not cynicism that we have a problem with (obviously) -- it's cynicism for the sake of cynicism. Cynicism as the automatic response to everything, you know? I think so far on Eegra we have some stuff that is very cynical, but also some stuff that is very positive and enthusiastic.

As for pretension... well, we really, deeply hate pretension. If there's some wanky stuff on the site, well... rest assured we totally mean that wanky stuff.

The tagline, 'Videogames for Attractive People', and I hope this doesn't come across as disingenuous, is not meant to be exclusive (of ugly people or whatever), but simply complimentary. It hasn't escaped me that the tagline might also ward off angry videogame nerds ('cause I get the impression they pretty much hate themselves), and if that's the case, good.

Do you think of yourself as not attractive, Intentionally Wrong? Sad You seem nice to me.

The comparison to the GIA is one that Daniel and me have received before (regarding Total Gamer, our old magazine). I wish it meant something to me! I remember that website being around, but I was never very familiar with it.

ANYWAY. Thanks again for taking the time to check out the website and respond. It's helpful to know how we might be coming across to people. Keep readin'! You know, if you want to!

I think it's really funny when on Consolevania they make fun of New Games Journalism and have a similar anti-pretention stance to you guys, but then they come out with some of the most pretentious stuff I've ever heard said about videogames.

It's got character and a nice layout. I do have one problem with it... I have no idea how it's expected to be pronounced. Please advise!

It's a gaming website. Angry nerds will eventually overrun you.

Edit: Just read some stuff, and I have one question.

"The concept is, in a nutshell, smart and funny content, for cool, smart guys and girls who like videogames..."

Was that statement meant to be a joke or something?

EE as in bee and GRA as in granola. Stress on the EE.

Apparently it's Clockwork-Orange-language for 'game', which is... well, a pretty okay name. There's no stylised joystick in the logo, so I'm happy.

Yes! As you'll have noticed, the content is actually dull and stupid. We're targeting the desirable and influential 'boring dork' demographic.

Does it have anything to do with the Russian words for "game," "play," etc.?

I thought it was a viagra reference.

"E-agra"

Get your E on!

Sexy fun videogames.

For smart attractive people, not fat potato chip eating ugly people.

It makes me think of that movie that was on MST3k.

Well, the slang spoken in A Clockwork Orange was based on Russian, so yeah.
