An LJ friend posted a quote from bash.org. My response was as follows, and I thought I could get more of an answer here:
Quote:
Hadn't thought about bash.org and its ilk for a while.

Is there a name for that particular brand of humor/snark?

It's so often juvenile, but often scales to tremendous heights of hilarious sophomoricness. I see traces of it - and sometimes try to generate some- in some of the indy game forums I frequent.

Does anyone share this feeling? I don't know if it's fair to think of it as "frat-ish" I see it as part of what started the LOLCats back when they were called Cat Macrost, and stuff like http://ftw.generation.no . (It's always interesting when you see a bit of awww, cute sticking out.)

For bash.org, I'd say you'd call that brand of humor, "Pre-planned garbage."

Well, maybe bash.org is a bad example. Or else you take offense or beg to differ when I say that sometimes the funny on these kind of forums is of the same mold?

It's... I dunno. In some ways its better than what Usenet used to offer, pithier and more observant, more prone to snarky bon mot, full of a certain self-aware ironic swagger. Also, generally free to ignore taboos on racist and homophobic etc remarks, but also self-deprecating, and not afraid to show a sweet side, saying "awww, puppies!" when appropriate, with that putting it one step beyond some of the usual frat-ish idiocy I'm used to.

The example I've got stuck in my head from this site is dhex in the FPS thread talking about the women characters in Japanese Arcade Halflife 2:
Quote:
aw man i just notice she has high heels on.

man japan why you gotta be like that?
Analyzing something like that always runs the risk of ruining the funny, but I do think it works on a few different levels.

I'd like more of this kind of funny in my life, because it's funny.

I saw a bit of it in the IRC chats during the Glorious Trainwrecks 100-in-1 Pirate Kart weekend. During the event, it was fun to go boasting in a silly, grandiose style, no one took it seriously, but it was amusing to be explaining how you're making the best games in the history of the universe, and then BAM! There it is.

I guess I've been thinking about it since the last GT event; I finished with about 2 minutes to spare, and then did the IRC equivalent of kicking back in my chair and musing aloud about how I was going to use my extra minutes. And this was meant in good fun to annoy people who were sweating the finishing touches, or who frankly might be running a few minutes over, and they took it in that spirit and responded appropriately, and it was reasonably funny. Not a funny that bears that much repeating, this analysis not withstanding, but funny in the context.

Speaking of frat-boy humour, how the hell has Pointlesswasteoftime.com managed to go from one of the most unique, individual, well written and inventive comedy sites on the internet to a humour portal that links to articles like 'Top 5 Mental Disorders That Could Totally Get You Laid'?

Money.

I never knew Pointlesswasteoftime.com back in the day.

Cracked is kind of interesting. One guy's blog I read links to the articles all the time. Its hit or miss, and when it misses it just seems juvenile and angry and self-glrofied and stupid, but when it hits its pretty good. A curious evolution from the old ghetto-MAD print version.

And MAD magazine... man, I hate to be one of those "they sucked because they sold out" guys but they sucked because they sold out. MAD with Ads just feels wrong, especially with some of the "X-treme!"-style adds where you lose track of where the parody stops and the real crapitalism begins.

no. what was it?

when i was a kid i was kind of literal so i never "got" mad magazine and i wonder whether i was just transcendentally stupid or i lacked the pop cultural know-how to understand parodies of pop culture. (it was around the age 11 or so where i thought doonesbury was funny)

it also wasn't available at the library so it's not like i could spend a lot of time reading it anyway - same reason i never thankfully got into comics or any actual gen games for that matter. (having no money pays off in the end or something like that)

but it was one of those things that seems to have been a part of everyone's life. weirdness.

lowbrow.com would randomly produce a story users decided to send in. These anecdotes would usually be on the verge of somewhere between awful and hilarious.

You know, like stuff you hear from the bros, y'all.

This South African guy I know says it a lot too and it sounds like 'broo'.

You used to be able to look at the old pointlesswasteoftime.com through the wayback machine, but now it's blocked by 'robots.txt'. What is wrong with people?

Anyone remember when SA was funny?

dhex, what years were you not looking at Mad magazine, roughly?

For me it was an 80s thing, which I've picked up is probably past its golden age but a lot better than what it became.

Lowbrow.com was great. I hadn't thought of it for the longest time. The front page
Quote:

seem to betray a certain lack either of A. the possibilities of inoffensive ads-and-crap, B. running a site on the cheap and/or C. judging people's willingness to pay for momentary novelties.

"Bro" is ok. It's that weird (California?) "Bra" that gets me.

Only thing that site has going for it these days are David Thorpe and the Let's Play forums.

When Lowtax wrote the front page all by himself, in the first two years. It was consistently funny every day! That, and the humour was completely fresh and like nothing else I'd seen. I don't know how he kept it up for as long as he did.

I guess the problem with getting internet famous is that you have too much of a direct connection with your rabid, devoted fanbase. David Wong of PWOT said 'I work a dead-end job all day and then when I turn on my computer there's a thousand people waiting for me who think I'm Elvis'. If that's what it feels like, I can see how you'd easily become complacent and feel like you don't have to try anymore.

Sometimes I think about becoming an interenet celebrity since it seems so easy, but then I decide, nah. If anyone can do it, why bother, you know?

I remember when SA was funny! Those were the days.

I used to read humour sites all the time when I was in college. I can't really remember any of them these days, and nothing seems to have taken their place. I remember when the internet was fun and exciting and not a shithole Sad

Man, everyone remembers when SA was funny. My favorite SA article is I Wanna Be an Internet Tough Guy. It's not even that old.
