HAR

The funny thing is I did actually mean something by posting that pic, the first time.

Yahtzee wrote in the small print of the last ZP that he wants the address of the person who reviewed his game in ZP style so he can go over and 'burn his fucking house down'.

He doesn't need to make the effort. When was the last time he did, anyway?

There seems to be a lot of real visceral hate for this man, this Yahtzee, who has committed the heinous crime of playing video games and then posting videos about them on an inter net. I dunno, I mean I find him funny, and you don't. So what who cares etc but there seems to be real simmering, vicious loathing here which I do not understand.

I've explained it before in the thread. What it boils down to is: He's a fucking goon. He's not funny, he's not doing anything new, he can't take a joke or his own advice, and the fact that he's the sole reason that The Escapist gets so much traffic now is beyond laughable.

This is really stupid but I just realized why the "Edge" website looked so bland and corporate and not layyed out in landscape mode was because I was actually thinking of the Escapist. Whoops.

Well, saying he's not funny is a bit redundant but where did you get this "can't take a joke or his own advice" thing from? If you're referring to his response to the parody video (as espoused in the one line on the end of the latest ZP) I dunno, I thought it was pretty clear that he was just playing to his jackass-personality he cultivates. Just because something isn't new doesn't really mean anything either, I'm not sure why that would be such a huge thing to you.

And as for the question of Traffic to The Escapist, that really says more about The Escapists' ability to spot a popular thing and throw money at it than anything about what Yahtzee is doing.

Look at his output (His later games), look at his feedback (Ranty reviews).

He plays to his audience like every other British fuckhead to American teens and it's disgusting. The fact that he receives any form of recognition would make me groan if it wasn't so fucking common.

He's doing nothing new and he's doing nothing of interest and the Internet lap it up.

Then again, consider The Escapist's forum-goers in light of their articles. That's even funnier.

Yeah, and it's now their main source of traffic. You know what that says? That their content is dire and they needed t3h lulz to have any form of appeal at all. Which is fucking hilarious. It's like Pitchfork hosting wacky Flash movies.

n the hilarious flipside of the coin ScrewAttack tried to counter their "all we have is the angry nintendo nerd" status and hosted a series called "The Art in Gaming" about aesthetic decisions in games. After four episodes the guy behind it finished the run of things he had planned and asked the forum what they wanted to see next. And the show's been nothing but toilets in games ever since.

Harvey, I remember you saying about how the stark black/white tone of space is beautiful and should be explored more often. Allow me to introduce you then to this nice, gravity based puzzle game, entitled Once in Space, by one Arvi Teikari. Music by Nifflas.

Cool, but the stars wouldn't move like that unless that guy was trillions of light years high, and they were somehow aligned to two flat planes only :O

So it doesn't really have anything of the majesty of space I was talking about :O

Flywrench is out and I was right, it is damn difficult.

Or maybe tedious, that's a good buzzword.

yeah, it's pretty brutal.

I'm a big fan of flap mechanics, and the general concept of directional flapping is novel. The "must be in a certain flight mode" to pass through gates is a bit sketchier, and the roughness of the physics and scrolling just make it not so fun.

I remember people yelling at me for JoustPong being too tough, but it's a cakewalk compared to this.

I find that constantly getting killed off due to me having to wrestle with the controls more times than not boring and tiresome. Everything outside of that though...

Oh, fair enough then. I don't have that much of a problem with it, honestly, what with the instant reloading and the puzzles being very short. I can see how it would get frustrating, though.

Oy, now I almost want to struggle through this to see the end credits.

I think part of the problem is it's easy to get a wrong idea about the physics model: steering can be done independently of flapping, and I didn't know rolling can be done in perpetuity as defense against yellow.

EDIT: also from a design point of view, I'd say adding so many boards to the first security gate might've been a mistake. Some of the gates have only a few boards, so the effort/reward ratio is a bit more in line.

For no particular reason other than a bit of annoyance at the difficulty of this game
(actually I got through, because I think for some reason my home computer was playing it a bit below speed) and because I actually like "flap" mechanics (see: Joust, and Balloon Flight), I made a parody mashup of this game: Flywrench meets my own Atari 2600 JoustPong in the thrill-a-minute world of: flywrenchpong
(You can also play it online).

It also features a homemade electronic soundtrack! (Made by slowing down and "wa-wa'ing" an Atari 2600 Supercharger .wav)

I think if I died tomorrow, the # of people who "get" the joke because of familiarity with both indy game flywrench and atari homebrew joustpong would go down by about 33%.

Flywrench

Here's a video for it. It's got excellent design and deceptively simple puzzles, but it's pretty great. And brutally hard.

I think it was greater slowed down a tad-- I think my home desktop is slower than my work laptop. Maybe it was the keyboard, though.

I got through it. Thought the credits were a tad over-rated.

Overall I liked this game.

And messhof described my parody mashup of it as "amazing" after I pimped it there.

That phrase is kind of like "appropriately impressed" in how it scales positive and negative, but I'm just in it for a nanosecond of my Wahol-ian fame anyway, so it's all good.

That's a lovely little piece. I'm not sure if I agree it shouldn't need an explanation... or rather I agree that it shouldn't but think it does... here's one, though obviously you should check out the game first.

It is a gem, but not without its flaws, but maybe the flaws add to the experience.

Ultima 5 remake in the Dungeon Siege 1 engine.

Must have DS 1.

So not exactly a free game.

I don't know if any of you yanks have been paying attention, but the Australians and the Japanese are having a bit of a tiff right now about whaling. We think it's wrong to slaughter whales to extinction for snack food, especially when it's in OUR waters, and the Japanese are all like oh no it's science research even though we can clearly see them butchering the things on the boat, and even accidently slipped out that they were selling it as snack food in a little anti-Australian propaganda film they recently released. Oh and they are all like, we don't recognise it as your waters so get lost!!!

We Australians are a bit miffed by the whole thing, with pressure being put on the goverment to do something about it (one idea they're throwing around is taking huge destroyers out to sea, pointing guns right at their ship and telling them politely to get the fuck out of Australian waters), but one fellow from TANTALUS GAMES, a little Australian development company, made a game about the whole thing. In his words, its a "Cetacean Research Simulator, where you play the role of a Japanese scientist performing research on whales around Antarctica". Essentially its a bitingly satirical game where you play the part of the Japanese "research" vessels, harpooning whales which are then researched into whale burgers and catfood, all the time avoiding icebergs, Green Peace and the media.

Nice! I'll have a play with that, I will.

Seriously Japan, what the hell. When you have to give whale meat away to kids in schools because nobody will buy it, it's not tenable to turn around and say that "whaling is our culture and our right". Especially in Australia's goddamn waters.
