Well, I'm going to play it again anyway! Maybe I'll like it more in portable form. I hope this port is in a decent state.

Also, has anyone managed to get DooMDS working? help me plz.

EDIT: ROTTDS works pretty well! It has a few glitches, but the game seems to work fine. Wish I could turn up the gamma, but apart from that, it's pretty solid so far.

EDIT 2: Finally got DooMDS running. Gets a little sluggish at times, but fully playable, I like how the map is down the bottom. I think both this and ROTT should make the run button toggle it on and off though. Like capslock!

Man, Space Hulk is hard! It's pretty one-sided for a board game, too, since besides a couple of line-of-sight blocking tactics the Genestealer player isn't really able to do much beyond move his hungry hordes towards the Space Marines. Being the Space Marines is all about strategy, though, and it's bloody hard. It kind of feels as though it must have been designed for solo play, especially since the odds are stacked so viciously against the Marine player and it takes a few attempts at learning the ins and outs of each level before you have even a hope of winning it.

Are there any more good Warhammer games? I used to love Warhammer 40,000, Necromunda and all that. My favorite was playing Epic 40,000 with super Titans, insane giant robots which were armies unto themselves. Stuff would happen like fires would break out on your Titan when it got shot in certain areas and you'd have to manage the on-board fire crew every turn to try and get it under control. They were ridiculous, clanking, ramshackle affairs, like this:

There's different character living all over it who all have an effect over play in one form or another. That tallest tower there has got a sort of temperamental wizard living in it who basically does as he pleases every turn, for good or for ill. The illustrations, showing crew members swinging from the rigging and getting into fights, all gave it the swashbuckling, anarchic feel of a pirate ship. It really captured my imagination.

Unless you're going to start talking about that horrible Warhammer 40K FPS, get your own thread!

Yes! It was terrible! I can't even reemember what it was called, hang on...

Here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warhammer_40%2C000:_Fire_Warrior

Plus the Space Hulk games were kinda FPS.

Also I just discovered a Warhammer game is coming to DS and PSP. I look forward to the DS one!

EDIT: Damnit, ryry.

Fire Warrior shows that Warhammer 40k videogames should stick to strategy and not shooting people via the first person.

Wow, that looks shithouse.

I think WH40K would be well-suited to the DS.

Yes, it better not suck

On a side note, I really enjoyed the first Turok despite it's huge technical limitations. Fun weapons, fun enemies, cool music and environments (even if you couldn't see more than three feet in front of you).

But man, Turok 2 has to be one of the most over-rated games ever. It was just so awful!

I never bothered with any of the games after that, but I hear they didn't get any better!

The only saving grace of Turok 2 was shooting one of those bipedal lizard things in the head with an arrow as they run past so that they go arse over head. That was about it really.

It was originally going to be Wolfenstein 3D part 2 but that changed along the way. Which is why it has so many random ideas and confusing, mazey level design. I wouldn't want it to be any different, probably because I am used to it, though others may not share that same point of view.

My biggest problem is that levels are so large and I forget to save during missions and end up having to replay the whole damn thing.

Also some more quirks with ROTTDS... sound skips in and out, so sometimes you don't hear a bad guy until he starts shooting at you, and I wish I could change turning sensitivity because it takes forever to turn around!

Aw, Wolfenstein era... maybe the last time, technology-wise, you could fully design a map on a sheet of graph paper.

Firewarrior was okay, and gets props for making a Bolter feel like a Bolter. Reminded me of a poor man's Quake II, in the end.

Their first mistake was having you play as a Tau instead of a Space Marine or something.

Then again, I've always felt that for all its history, people never figured out how to properly use the 40k universe so that it provided something beyond tedious fascistic power fantasies for teenagers with way too much money to spare.

I had never played any of the 40k games before Dawn of War, and I found that over-the-top approach pretty fantastic. Well, with the expansions there are 7 or so races, but the Space Marines' enthusiasm was always fun - "DIE! DIE! DIE!" and all.

-

It's a shame that no one plays Quake Wars anymore. It's difficult to get into, but it's one of the few online team-based games I've played where the weapons feel almost like they do in first-person shooters. Unlike in the Battlefield series where guns seem to be shooting out pebbles, or just sparks of light, the assault rifle in Quake Wars does some damage and has a nice kick to it. And calling in an airstrike is always good times.

Yeah, I never picked up on the fascism sde of it first time around. I mean the Spaceship in the first campaign of Space Hulk is called the 'Intolerance'. Hey but there's something for everyone! The Orks seem to be quite anarchist if anything. And the Eldar were, um, democratic? I never got into the Eldar to be honest.

Oh and Necromunda was pretty hot. Gang warfare! I loved that game.

I like that Ork technology works because they believe that it will so hard that the universe just accommodates them.

Dawn of War really should be a turn based game. I'm so sad they decided to try and fit it in the RTS build-and-destroy paradigm.

I like the fascist/nihilistic little slogans sprinkled throughout the Warhammer 40K source book. Especially the "Every man is a spark in the darkness. By the time he is noticed he is gone forever. A retinal after-image that fades and is obscured by newer, brighter lights." and "But the universe is a big place and, whatever happens, you will not be missed...."

I was all hyped about Dawn Of War but then I found out it wasn't turn based. Which is a shame since I'd buy it pretty quick smart since you can get it with most if not all of the expansion packs for a good price now.

So are you guys playing that Space Hulk game Dracko linked to? It's really fun. It's great being able to play a Warhammer game without having to actually spend any money, or clear off the kitchen table to do it. I remember these games used to take about an hour to set up, and probably a whole month to persuade someone else to come round and actually play it with you. It's nice just having it at the touch of a button. I wish someone would do the same for all the other games.

But that's just it: It has all these neat ideas about nigh-on religious xenophobia and the like, and whenever that's put into a storyline, for a game or a video, they never explore it. Even the novels don't bother (not that there aren't any good ones), and it's a shame, because it's a vast and complex universe when it cares to be.

I got into Warhammer pretty much entirely because of the Ork aesthetic, especially the illustrations. I have some poor bastards 'Ere We Go book and I don't even play anymore.

It's really more like some kind of weird hyperfeudalism than facism, really.

The emperor cries a tear for every marine who dies.

Oh yeah, I remember that, HAHAHAH

I'm amazed how many closet Warhammer fans there are here. So did anyone play Necromunda?

This is the first time I do not approve of thread derailing at TGQ.

And mark my words, it will be the last time.

It will be the only time.

Blood Bowl is also Games Workshop. The local (har har I almost said lorkal) gaming store has two copies of it, and they're both tagged decently high for a GW boxed set. I think it's rare these days!

Necromunda is the sort of Social Darwinist environment that would lend itself well to gang-based missions with the occasional zombie or genestealer attack.

Holy shit this thread is about Warhammer now and I stopped reading it five pages ago. Dammit. I'm absolutely hanging out for the day somebody makes either an FPS or an MMO out of:
- Necromunda
- Inquisitor
- Gorkamorka

Three properties that I think would do fucking fantastically well if treated properly, unlike 40K in general which just has such a ridiculously huge scope. I really, really, really hope they do the upcoming 40K MMO justice and make it squad-based rather than you controlling say, a Terminator as he runs around picking herbs to up his alchemy levels.

In a related story, Fire Warrior was well done in its aesthetic and representation but when it got to the point where I was a lone Tau warrior taking down a daemon prince with my toothpick gun I got a bit digusted.

In another related story, Dawn of War isn't turn based but it's still hands down totally fun and one of the most successful representations of 40K that's ever been seen in a video game. I think Relic deserves massive kudos for their interpretation and execution. I'm still not sold on Soulstorm because it doesn't have the fucking Tyranids in it and honestly how many expansions do we need until this galactic-scale extinction-level threat race gets into the game instead of these piece-of-shit niche armies like Dark Eldar that both in terms of player representation, and fluffwise, are a tiny tiny insignificant minority.

Dracko, I'd recommend reading (if you already haven't) any of Dan Abnett's 40K books but particularly the Eisenhorn series, and there's a few Gaunt's Ghosts novels (Traitor General comes to mind) that are quite good at emphasising the horrible insignificance of a single soul in the giant machine that is the Imperium of Man.

especially if we could play as acro-flagellants. melee on crack ftw!

Maybe Mordheim as well as, how I understand it, it's basically medieval Necromunda only with a more interesting background.

I tried playing Dark Eldar in 40k once. They're fucking impossible to use pretty much! I was mostly an Imperial Guard/Necron player though, so maybe I just didn't know what the fuck I was doing.

It can be done, I know somebody who had their Dark Eldar pretty finely tuned. It involved a lot of the zippy hovercraft ships.

Totally man. They're basically the most ridiculous finesse-dependent army in history. One wrong turn and your whole force collapses into a pile of bondage masks and lube. On the flip-side though, experienced Dark Eldar players will drill you eight new orifices before you even know the game has started. Which is really annoying. Oh, and the Dark Eldar model range is atrocious.

I'm pretty good with Eldar. They were my main force until Necron became available. Then I realized how insanely whore Necron were, so I went back to Eldar.

Unless I'm going against a friend, I don't really have any certain strategy I use. When I'm playing against a friend, I know their play style, so I can act accordingly, but when it's someone new, I pretty much just guess around and build what I know works, which can be a variety of things, if done correctly.
