I have the feeling that most Pokemon probably have some form of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

I don't know what people think of the comic in general but
http://www.duelinganalogs.com/?date=2006-12-04
-- that illustrates a thought I had, what a human pokemon would be like.

I'd never heard of that comic so I read a few old ones and wow, they're not ashamed of shilling out.

I wonder how much it would take for them to get them to mention The Gamer's Quarter in a strip. I'm guessing $1.

Yeah, that's pretty egregious. But relatively isolated, and there is some funny stuff there, and I dug the Mega Man rejected enemies.

I mean no chair's that good. If I had one I'd probably say 'there are many ways this chair could be better- if it turned into a bed, or if it had a built-in clock radio, or if it was yellow'. I don't believe it's so good the only way it could possibly be better is if it wasn't a chair at all but a one-way ticket to the life of a Ming Dynasty hareem.

Well, the gauntlet has been thrown. I sent them an email:

Quote:

Hi, I'm an occasional contributor to a magazine called The Gamer's Quarter. You might remember Tycho singing our praises at PAX this year!!!!

Will you mention our magazine in one of your comics for $1?

It might happen! These guys are all about the benjamins. They have a whole crazy donations system going on for their comic which I think is amazing. Currently they have a donation target of $400, and whoever donates the single largest amount of money in the climb to get to the target gets to tell them what to write about. The highest donation right now is $55. So it's like an auction, except even if you're outbid you still have to pay them the money, and instead of bidding on something good you're bidding to get the chance to write someone else's comic strip for them. That's clever shit.

Boy, if only comics were allowed some kind of artistic license to exaggerate for comic effect.

(Although, I think even in this case, "comic" might be stretching it anyway. But still.)

I would say it's funny to be ripping on this one strip so much. Shilling out products "in character" has a long history in radio and tv, we're just more used to the nicely framed version now. I think it's better to come out and say "I got some free swag" than to try and work in a product placement and pretend it's not there.

If only webcomics made it a habit of being funny. That would be a good use of their creative license IN MY HUMBLE OPINION

Yeah I was doing a comedy-of-deconstruction thing, making a joke out of how shit the joke is

I think it's pretty bad what they've done! Shilling out products 'in character' (e.g. Fred and Barney advertising cigarettes in the ad break for The Flintstones) is a relic of a bygone and more naive age. If someone does that now they completely compromise their integrity, especially when it's in a format so reliant on editorial comment and opinion like a weekly strip cartoon about videogames. Like, how do I trust ther opinion on anything now? To quote Bill Hicks, everything they say after that point is just another turd dropping into my drink. The way they've done it, with that guy grinning at the reader sitting on the chair is so cheesy and without shame the only way it could be worse is if the last panel was the main character giving the guy who owns the chair company a blow-job. On the chair.

I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR!

Talk Radio still has a lot of the "in character" stuff, from Paul Harvey's folksy goodness (actually, it's claimed he really does vet the stuff he's paid to pitch, and has enough gravitas to say no) to random sports talk folks as well. So it's not just webcomics.

Usually it's not even webcomics!

I guess I can let Talk Radio off, a little, because the content comes from the guys who phone in anyway, but to be honest I could give two shits about Talk Radio DJs in a discussion about artistic integrity.

I listen to This American Life and Ira Glass says 'This American Life is sponsored by Volkswagon- when you get into a Volkswagon it gets into you' at the end of every episode in amongst the credits, which I guess he just about gets away with? Because it's clearly flagposted as a commercial, and it's inobtrusive. There's a world of difference between that and devoting a segment of the show to 'Ira loves his new Volkswagon'.

I have an urgent pokemon related concern:

Pokemon are feral before you throw balls at them right? Are they part of the ecosystem? Do they eat each other? Like is there a pokemon food chain someone's compiled? I'm actually curious about this.

But it's left vague, for the most part. Prof. Oak tells us 'there is so much about POKEMON we don't know about!!' For the longest time it wasn't clear how they reproduced. It kind of still isn't.

Don't they all eat berries and Pokecubes in some nice and overly-peaceful manner?

And speaking of mating, I always just figured that there were no differences in male and female pokemon, and they sort of reproduced asexually or something like that. But then you got the whole Nidoking and Nidoqueen thing going on, and that led me to believe that all pokemon should have male and female versions, and we only catch one gender of certain pokemon for some reason.

It's very confusing, and the fact that they incorporated genders into the later games makes it a little more confusing.

I don't think they gave that much thought to it, really, just "it's like our modern world but there's monsters everywhere and also fighting each other's monsters is the main activity of our civilization."

I'm going to pick Trapinch because you spend part of your lifecycle digging pits and the other part growing wings and flying and probably having lots of sex. If I'm going to be railroaded into becoming some incomprehensible animal that children throw balls at then I might as well go whole hog and enjoy the wonders of transformation. Like a happy version of that one Kafka story, one that teaches valuable life lessons and explores the wonders of the universe as opposed to being miserable and not fitting in to society.

Or you could just be Rayquaza and fly around forever and be impossible to catch.

Or maybe Latios/Latias.

The official explanation for pokemon reproduction is that a compatible boy and girl pokemon "play" together and then, mysteriously, an egg appears. All the researchers are very puzzled because the girl pokemon is never seen to actually LAY the egg, no matter how closely they watch.

Also, fuck 4chan's cancerous tendrils--I'd be a mudkip because lungfish are awesome.

Of the choices available, I'd want to be a Pikachu. Mainly for the cuteness, and the lack of naked flame.

Of all the Pokémon I could be... well, I guess I've always had a soft spot for Poochyena?

It's like lobbying! Except instead of monopoly rents you get to write someone else's strip for them.

Anyway. I would be a psyduck, because if I were forced to repeat only one word for the rest of my life, I think I would be ok with it being "psy." Also, cool voice. Also also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGeI_ZyFgdw holy shit this show is stupid. I could never play past blue/red anyway.

I think it would be cool to be Hitmonchan, that Boxer pokemon. He's got all the elemental punches, high speed, and sweet power so he'd rock. Kind of like an Ali-mon.

Funny, because you'd think he was based on Jackie Chan from the name, especially seeing as the long-leggedy kicking pokemon is called Hitmonlee.
