So I'm in GameStop the other day pre-ordering Halo 3 accessories when the guy does his job and asks me if I want to pre-order Mass Effect.

I say, "No, that game looks like shit."

He says, "What? That game looks awesome!"

And I say, "Did you play Jade Empire? That was maybe the worst game on Xbox."

He says, "It was great!"

And I leave the store.

So today this movie pops up on my internets. Watching this took one and a half minutes of my life that I'll never get back. I can't imagine a full game of this shit.

So here's my prophecy to anyone who's really looking forward to this game: Mass Effect will do for Science Fiction what Jade Empire did for Kung Fu. It will make it lifeless and boring. What am I missing that people are actually excited for this game?

I'm having a hard time getting excited about it as well. I hated Jade Empire. And nothing I've seen of Mass Effect looks all that interesting. Not to mention that a lot of the videos have been very erratic. I know it's all pre-release stuff, but most companies smooth a lot of that stuff out before showing - the combat just looks sloppy.

What the hell is wrong with her left eye? Also, I said that too you when we first watched the trailer on Xbox marketplace: this game looks like crap.

A lot of people like crap though!

Also, the aspect ratio of the movie is off.

Yeah, gotta say - I read a lot about Mass Effect and thought it looked really promising... and then I saw the video and went "huh".

Not a promising video.

Speaking of shit videos, anyone else watch Too Human's E3 trailer? Jesus Christ that was appalling. I thought that project had a budget bigger than that of a small country? Why was the animation so absolutely shit? I don't understand.

Videogames have reached the point that they can effectively mimic awful shows on Scifi channel.

sorry for this post, it's just striking how many closet-tintin fans there are on TGQ/SB.

Yes. Mass Effect looks to be the latest installment in a long series of CINEMATIC GAMING EXPERIENCES that is neither very cinematic nor very worthwhile. One problem is that the plot is in all probability hackneyed sci-fi shit. Seriously, all developers making games with a heavy emphasis on plot--actually, all developers--need to look squarely in the direction of Rockstar's Bully. Those guys have the right idea. Another problem is the painfully un-fun looking generic third-person-shooter combat, although that takes a back-seat to the THIRD and BIGGEST problem--the aspiration of the game to achieve something foreign to its own medium. I guess the simplest way to put it is that it isn't videogamey enough, and there is nothing that Mass Effect seems to be trying to do that hasn't been done repeatedly and infinitely better in other media. The game's one eyebrow-raising facet is the dialogue system, which looks interesting enough and could maybe mean something for the FUTURE OF VIDEOGAMES, specifically the way information is relayed to the player and the like. Maybe we'll see some real interactive cutscenes!

Is it eyebrow-raising because the player-character in that movie incessantly and inappropriately raises his eyebrow?

But yeah, looks like a Sci-Fi show with worse animation. That video seems to look even worse because the player chose the "be an easily-offended dick" path, which just made the characters look even more embarrassing.

There are so few games that can claim differently though. Those games are totally worth it though.

I've always had a bit of a problem with games not really sure what they're evolving to be. They don't know when to leave the player in control, they don't know when to take control from the player, and they don't know when to be serious (or how to be). Games like Mass Effect, I think, really seems like it "knows" where RPGs are going, but... like, it doesn't.

This is a good point, which is why I would say there so few games that are truly "worthwhile." There are different degrees of this--of how uniquely "videogamey" something is--though, and Mass Effect is trying too hard to be something that it maybe shouldn't be.

The E3 2006 video, which I just saw a week or so ago, was pretty cool, but then I watched the E3 2007 video, which was mind-numbing. Basically the art direction looks about as bland as can be, but I enjoyed KotOR the first time I played it, and this looks like it could be better. Definitely not a must buy, but the 2006 video has me interested enough that I will check back in when it comes out.

i like my space epics though. i'll let you guys know how it plays once it comes out, it's pretty clear no one who's posted here is going to give a bioware game a shot in hell.

Weird, considering the post above you.

I'm still holding out for Dragon Age. I've been enjoying the releases less and less, but something about it tickles my fancy. Maybe they could spice the title up a little more, something along the lines of Dragon Age: Dawn of Remembrance - Quest for Eternal Fire.

I'll be buying Sonic RPG day and date of its release! Also, I'm sort of half-heartedly trying to track down copies of the first two Baldur's Gate games. I remember a lot of people liked them a lot, I just never had the opportunity to find out why.

Also, Jade Empire is terrible, and KOTOR had the strength of the pre-defined Star Wars design to support any questionable original bio-ware art design. I did like KOTOR a lot, but it seemed way too long.

This is the first I've heard of this.

Probably not a good idea I guess? Direct me to some trailers, I am too tired to do work myself right now.

Nothin' shown yet to my knowledge. Really the only reason I'm interested is because it's on the DS and it'll be $30. $30 isn't too expensive for a wacky experiment.

I support games looking like bad movies on the sci-fi channel if Bruce Campbell is involved at least.

Also, no matter how terrible, it will be impossible for me to not watch a series based on the Flash Gordon movie. We're dealing with some real primal instinct-level shit here. Like how some hobos will get a little crazy when they start to starve.

I am pleased to report that after acquiring Mass Effect and being about two hours into it, that it as actually very enjoyable and delightfully plot-heavy. The dialogue wheel works very very well and I'm actually very hooked as to where the story will progress.

More reports as and when they arrive I guess, but so far I'm glad to be wrong. My only complaint would be that basically all the human females have the same face. It's a bit annoying.

So, Mass Effect.

I bought it last week, because I was at a K Mart and they broke the street date and I figured what the fuck. I enjoyed parts of Jade Empire, though I was never proud of that, and I actually beat it, so I figured I would give BioWare another shot at it. Also, I grew up as a sci fi nerd, so exploring planets and shit sounded like fun.

My first thoughts: does BioWare test their games? No, really. The graphics just pop-in constantly, things have to load all the time, there are the stupid elevators that are just horribly disguised load screens. Penny Arcade blames this on the whole 'can't use the hard drive because for some stupid reason MS released a system without one" and that may be it, but god, most other developers can get around it. Hell, the texture pop-in dwarfs anything Gears did.

So, once I am past being a superficial graphics whore, I start playing it. People talk a lot. It seems to have a decent little story in the universe, typical ancient civilizations and such. Nothing too revolutionary. Combat is improved a bit, as at least I actually get to fight (as opposed to KOTOR and its vague suggestions that your character might want to swing his sword now) but it isn't particularly smooth or anything. Exploring worlds is pretty fun, though it is rapidly apparent that every world has its sidequest when I stumble on to a random world, clear it all out of random pirates, only to later find out it was a sidequest and return to the planet to pick up the random trinket that finishes that sidequest.

I don't know. I can confidently say that it is the best console game bioware has made, but that isn't saying too much. I might be selling it, once game stores have it in stock so they will buy it from me.

Childhood thing of mine. No, I doubt I'd appreciate them now.

What's interesting about the Tintin games is that they're adventure-platformers. You have a good sense of place in the levels, each one has a clear, narratively driven objective with relevant puzzles and you get the full picture out of the story as a result. That and imitating the art style down to the word balloons is genius. What's annoying, and was still way back then, was Tintin getting damaged by absolutely everything and anything, even people minding their own business or leaves or pet dogs. This is an odd trend that is seen in many Infogrames games of the time, like they were lacking in obstacles and as if it made for a better game.

Give the ROMs a go, is all.

Mass Effect has been sounding less and less interesting the more I heard about it. Sad

i really never could get into KotOR. maybe i had an unfair distaste for it due to my utter disillusionment with Star Wars in general post 14 years old, but the game just seemed oddly choppy to me; to the point of being somewhat unplayable. there are some decent ideas going on, but it feels like nothing actually works. Mass Effect seems similar to me. also, it looks like a Sci-Fi channel series.

oK, that was a little pejorative sounding, but really, that's what it reminds me of.

that and the whole sex scene bit sort of irritate me.

so this is out now? is anyone really, really enjoying it?

Mass Effect is "Mass"ively flawed, and yet somehow it is maintaining my attention.

I think it's possibly that BioWare have good writers, even if a dull traditional sci-fi world isn't their best use.

BAM

Why don't you have puns like that in the magazine?

There's a girl who works for the company who made this game who posts on SB and she linked to an infomercial they made for the Sci-Fi channel. It featured one of the developers saying Mass Effect was 'the most moving piece of fiction he had ever witnessed in his lifetime' which kind of makes me think the developers must be as thick as shitty jam and that the game by extension is terrible. That commercial didn't really do its job for me!

personally, i haven't been a fan of bioware games since... ever. baldurs gate was pretty good i suppose, but everything has just been so damn bland and boring.
