Is anyone else picking this up? Looks to be the most exciting DS game till the end of the year.

I'd like to, despite how many other things I'm already working on. I've actually never played Hard Corps...

(waits for the hushed gasps to subside)

...even though I've always meant to, but the comparisons to old-school Contra/Super C/Contra III have been encouraging. For me, anyway.

Contra 4, is...I can't describe it. It's just too damn good. It's like Contra for the NES, but with better animation and graphics.

Everything about this game is pure amazing, even the descriptions for everything. Typically, I'd be able to write a nice little review on why a game is good, but I just can't sum up how amazing this game is in words.

Sounds like the perfect game for someone who's never played past the first level of any contra game ever.

Not that I, uh, know anyone around here like that. Right.

The challenges are pretty awesome. The game is exceptionally uninspired, and hasn't learned from a lot of the problems with 2D games (such as hit/collision detection and irritatingly large sprite sizes). It's pretty solid all said and done. It's no hardcorps though.

I finished challenge mode the other day, but doing so doesn't make Hard mode any easier, unfortunately. It does unlock a random gallery of badly cropped Contra arcade fliers and a sound test, though!

I can't get past stage 4 on Normal because of the rocket bullshit. I can beat Easy with only 2 credits now though.

I can't get past stage 1. I don't think I ever developed a Contra vocabulary of movement and I begin to doubt that I ever will.

Hard mode in this game is essentially as hard as something like Super Contra (arcade), except sometimes worse. Hard mode actually seems to bring to light some of the issues with the game, such as hit boxes, etc., because of how much is going on at once. i feel like the game wasn't really designed for Hard, and it was sort of tacked on afterwards (as opposed to the Treasure way of doing things: start high and make it easier for normal people).

but with some persistence i've managed to make it to the City stage in Hard. sort of infuriating, though.

I'm playing on Normal. I can one credit up to the hoverbike on water stage and then I get destroyed when that boat shows up. Once I lose both my guns I'm done for. I'm digging Virt's soundtrack. The end of level guitar riff is really nice.
