Yes, it is. Did the PSN release keep the Porco Rosso themed level? That one was one of my favorites.

Yup, it is level 4 ("Porco in the Sky").

I haven't actually unlocked it yet... got distracted by an IM during level 3 and died. But it is there.

Excellent. That and the final level are my favorites. I mean, all are great, but there's something quite special about both of those to me. I just can't put my finger on what that is.

I knew I'd find some folks into this game here at TGQ. I don't have a PS3 but am really interested in this game. I can't seem to find any reviews so far today.

So please, give us some impressions...

Does it still have that buyable / unlockable perpetual-sketchy/hand drawn option? Cos turning that up to maximum is pretty outrageous.

Yeah, there are a slew of visual unlockables, but I haven't earned enough points to see them in action yet. I believe one is the sketch effect, another is black and white, one has to do with contrast... There are quite a few. Alongside a "shuffle" option and single play level unlocks.

OK, I totally got caught up in the game last night so I didn't get around to posting about it. It is seriously one of the best games I have played, probably ever. I love the combo aspect (where each level has a different way to combo together kills and it is up to the player to figure out the best way of accomplishing this). I love the fact that, despite the bright visuals, it can be brutally hard and really takes skill to get both a) high scores and b) stay alive (comparing my current 'bests' with Jonathan Mak's high scores... I have no idea how he got so many points in each level).

The soundtrack, while probably not everyone's cup of tea, is absolutely brilliant - both in it's interactivity aspect (everything you shoot plays a note or a riff, adding to the song) as well as its general composition. For the first time EVER, my girlfriend came out of the bedroom while I was playing a game to ask what I was listening to. If I could listen to these songs on my iPod while walking to school or driving, I would.

I am getting better... I can now pretty dependably get to level 3 or 4 before dying (out of eight, from what I recall). I can see that it isn't a very long game but I am truly savouring every minute of it.

It differs from Super Stardust HD in that there is a huge strategy element. Just destroying enemies doesn't actually give you points... you need to destroy them in a manner that will produce the most "pixels" and then absorb them before they disappear. This means that killing everything on the screen simultaneously - which produces too many pixels than you can absorb before they disappear, isn't always the best option. As well, and I guess this is for Shaper, there is no "easy way out" button that one can mash to get out of tricky situations, like the turbo-boost in SS. You need to play strategically, acknowledging both the enemies close to your 'ship' and across the screen.

My only complaint: I just wish there was a two-player option!

It was originally supposed to be (the Wikipedia article still says WIN and PS3 under platform) but, at the moment, it is kind of up in the air since noone really knows what the contract between Jonathan Mak and Sony actually stipulates.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony bought exclusive rights.

This is a pretty damn good game. My biggest complaint is that the shooting is locked in certain directions despite being a dual analog game. You can only shoot in one of 16 different directions rather than a full 360. Kinda sucks since you're losing some potential aiming directions by moving to button aiming, but analog aiming isn't smooth enough with the stick to be 100% dependable.

So yeah, what happened to the PC release? I never really looked very closely, but I was always under the impression that it was released as freeware way back and just now ported to the PS3.

Yeah, the directional shooting is a bit weird.

But, it makes sense in light of the fact that the designer prefers to play the game with the face buttons (square/triangle/etc) rather than the sticks!

I finally got this last night and played a few games. I never really got a chance to play this by myself so it's a bit of a different experience than at GDC. I only got to play about 4 - 5 games and haven't made it more than 91% into level 3. Oh well!

About the dual analogue: It was never designed to be played like that. If you read the notes section of the game Mak even says to use the buttons because they're better. After I started using them I started scoring a bit better. And even though the PC version was playable with a 360 controller, you had to use the face buttons to shoot on that version.

Wes: This game was never released as freeware/shareware/anyware. It only previously had a trailer on the PC and it was entered in the IGF as a PC game.

My only comment on the game itself is that he could have worked a bit more on smoothing out the font. The font still looks like it's from a freeware PC game. Other than that this game is pretty perfect.

Haha, thats a funny observation... I actually really love the font - for that exact reason. It makes the game feel... more intimate, almost? I don't really know.

Playing the game by yourself is MUCH different than playing with other people around. When others were watching/playing, it was more of a "how high a score can you get? how close to objects can you get without dying?" kind of thing. Alone, it is much more relaxed, much more what I think Jon intended. It definitely is replacing flOw as my "ambient" relaxation type game.

As of this morning, I finally got to the last level - saw 91% of it, in fact, before dying. It was beautiful. I still haven't unlocked painter or sketch effect (as you have to beat the game to do so) but I've unlocked all of the other visual options. Damn, they are confusing (inverting the colors makes the game MUCH harder).

The boss in the final level is intense.

My "ambient" relaxation type game is not to play a game.

Oh wait, is that just the number eight in the middle? In my mind, it was just a really minimalist black-and-white stage.

They're only better because the dual analog isn't very well done. I can't say whether this is intentional or just an oversight, but I really wonder how big the difference in design/scoring would be if 360 degree shooting was officially supported.

Mostly intentional, though a better word would probably be forced. He most likely had to include the support.
