I was thinking Elsie and Francis... but yeah, Adilegian was right. They are in the first game (but reappear in cardform in the second).
They are, literally, marionettes.
I don't remember if you fight them or not (I actually don't think you do) but they are somewhat pivotal in the storyline. _________________ PSN: Twitch_City ||| Wii: 8083 5371 5767 6700

You know, the marionettes just feel like someone trying to out kojima, Kojima. They were horrible story elements. In fact, I don't really like Acid. I still have Acid2 in its package on the off chance that I decide to open it and hate myself (it was also on sale for like $
Can I skip the A!1 and move onto A!2 without a problem? Is there any reason to attempt to finish A!1? Was Portable Ops worth playing (my guess is no).
Honestly, it was the Metal Gear series that tought me that I don't like Snake/Metal Gear games, I like Kojima as a designer. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

You probably don't want my opinion because I love both ACiD titles... but, I'd say try 2. You don't need to complete 1 to play 2 (separate stories, they aren't really related) and 2 is much more fluid and easier to like in a general sense.
As for Portable Ops... since you don't really like MGS, I don't know if it is essential for you. For anyone who likes MGS... it certainly is (both for the canon storyline as well as the gameplay). They added in all sorts of new elements (like recruiting soldiers and placing them in levels as spies, being able to switch player characters to blend in easier, etc). I really liked it. _________________ PSN: Twitch_City ||| Wii: 8083 5371 5767 6700

I think it's The Sorrow.
Anyway, yeah. I haven't followed this game much except for the big trailers that have been released. I don't think I have room enough in my headspace to get excited about another big name AAA title videogame coming out in the near future.
I also don't have a PS3 yet.
I will play MGS4 in due time though, and I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it about as much as I enjoyed the last three games. That is, greatly and gloriously. _________________ Mr. Mechanical |

Swimmy, that's genius. Shaper, you should let me spruce that up for the next issue of TGQ. Would either of you object to that?
Dess, I might be with you. I dunno. I don't want another next-gen system right now (I can't believe I'm saying that). I can wait a bit. |

Ah, it's not mine. I yanked it from the SA forums. In a thread devoted to bizzarre infographics, no less! But I knew it belonged in this discussion. _________________

So, new TGS trailer, huh? I have some comments (big surprise there):
1) Okay, Videogame Industry, enough with the randomly sexualised female characters. Oh look! I'm on a battlefield and I'm showing as much of my tits as I can! Here's a close-up! Seriously.
2) A monkey. A MONKEY. And I'm really dreading the English voice-over of his keeper, Token Black Guy by Japanese Videogame Company. He will no doubt be a completely offensive fuckwad. Oh yeah: A MONKEY.
3) Some of the character details look fantastic, but some of the animation looks really stiff and obvious. Is it just me? That monkey looks like a marionette.
4) Now you can see my tits and my thighs! How very progressive!
5) Gigantic Testuo/Kaneda Metal Gear Ray/Rex show-down. This is the biggest stroke of pandering yet, but I have to admit it's kind of exciting. Lots of belly-sliding nuclear robots and screeching.
This whole game is obviously a kitchen-sink sort of deal; Christ, is there a character or situation that isn't in this game? I am anticipating an undecipherable mess of Pirates of the Caribbean 3 proportions. |

Once again you fail to link us to said trailer ;_____;

Uhh, I was kind of expecting this with it being Kojima. I mean, with anyone else I would jump on the band wagon with you, but at least here I will say that I was expecting it.

my impression is that kojima, who hasn't wanted to develop new metal gear games since solid, wants to finally make a metal gear game it is impossible to expect a sequel to. that's why snake is doomed, and that's why every conceivable character and situation in the metal gear series is likely to be dragged before the spotlights one final time and pitted together in one final bombastic last hurrah. _________________

I was thinking this too, but it seemed like too obvious a statement.
Also, I thought that he DID want to make MGS2, but that was the last one he wanted to make. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Yes, I think you're both right.
In a way, it's good. I mean, the series should have ended after MGS2, if you ask me.
The trailer's on GameVideos. |

I agree, though personally I'd prefer if they took MGS2 and applied some of the mechanics of 3 to it - except, it really seems like that's basically what they're doing here (with Snake at the helm, of course).
I can't wait to see what the encounter with grandma Eva is going to be like. She's got to be closing on 70, and after her performance as an escort quest in 3 I'll be sorely dismayed if she turns out to be some sort of Boss-esque showdown. (Yeah, she was poisoned, but hell - Snake is tackling everything but the girl here, and he's got foxdie to deal with.) And when I say "I can't wait" I'm actually being sarcastic and not fake-sarcastic or anything.
I'm still going to buy it.

Ok, I watched the video. This is going to be awesome, seriously.
I kind of hope they make the monkey owner out to be flamboyant in the US version. Very "Bruce the hairstylist" type thing.
Also, like, Snake vs Monkey! This time it's for real.
EDIT: Am I the only one who thinks that the amount of trailers for MGS4 is bizarre? _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

What is the real story with the number of MGS games that Kojima wanted to make, then? I thought it was three, corresponding to the Genes - Memes - Scene outline, but clearly I'm a sucker.
EDIT: Also, who was it, back in the old Insert Credit days, who predicted that in MGS4 you'd get to pilot a Metal Gear? Because holy shit, that was good work.
FURTHER EDIT: Toups the Elder. I am impressed. |

i'm going to further confuse things by stating that i remember Kojima claiming in an interview that he never planned anything more than Metal Gear Solid 1. maybe he was being semi-deceitful with that claim, though, as MGS2 has a LOT of documentation (that we've seen). the ending of MGS1 was a decent cliffhanger, but maybe he really didn't have more plans than that? but i find it somewhat hard to believe he had no thoughts of a sequel.
anyway, after 2, he didn't want to be involved on a directorial level with the games anymore, but...haha, well, that hasn't really happened. |

Right, he initially said that he made MGS1 to be alone. Then he was like, "Ok, I want to do 2, but only like because I have this AMAZING idea lolz otaku" then he had officially said "Guys I'm done now." Then SOMEONE at konami said "You're doing a third one because we're the SUPERPOWER of the state and will ruin you if you don't." Then when it was finished Kojima was like "It was fun, but I don't want to make another. At all. Like, seriously look at the cover of EDGE Magazine Konami Japan." Then konami japan was like "LOL11 Kojima we have offer you can't refuse. Build Jiant Robototo Gear 4 with more of everything and we give you your own studio to do anything with you like. It's all funded by sony, but we may go 360 eventually for MGS4: The Search for More Money."
And I can't back any of this up. But it's pretty much true if exaggerated. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Yeah, give or take a bit. I remember also reading that Kojima was kinda pissed that MGS was the big game in the series, as he intended it to be metal gear part 3, so now we have MGS2:MG4, MGS3:MG5, and MGS4:MG6. I wish I could find it, but I remember him seeming to have a slight tone of pissed-offed-ness at the first two games being ignored. Probably at least a little bit of motivation for why they showed up in the MGS3 special edition. |

I never noticed.
At least they didn't model him after the other Snake.
Well, maybe just a teeny bit.

Shaper, that's genius. True, too.
It'll be interesting to see how people feel about the series after all is said and done, compared to how they felt a few years ago, or after MGS1.

I've heard that too, in Tim's Mother 2 review of all places.
Kojima went on record stating his dislike for the first Metal Gear though, I'm fairly certain. |
