But yeah, IF have the benefit of being able to pull the same stunts as literature, and mostly demand some degree of quality writing. Even with bleeding-edge graphics and design, it's a shame not more games try to do anything similar.

well, the thing with if is there's just such low overhead. there's no need to worry about graphics or sound design. if you have an idea, you can just bang out a couple paragraphs. that's why adam cadre could come up with a simple idea like 9:04 and just put it out there. could you imagine drawing graphics for 9:04?

the other good thing about if is that the medium is actively trying to recruit non-coding authors. inform 7 has taken a lot of steps to be less like code and more like language. if aspires to be as simple to write as it is to type a story on a typewriter, and, i've been saying for a while now, this is exactly what the medium needs.

I beat attack of the yeti robot zombies on my second try. I probably could have done it on my first, but I was attempting to beat it without shooting anything which caused me to do a few stupid things and I got eaten by a Yeti Robot Zombie.

It's pretty good and fun, but it's riddled with little errors ("off" instead of "of" and the like). I would recommend it to new players as well as 9:05.

Also, dess, am I missing something on robot gardening? It seems like there's not too much I can do, and I can't water anything or fix the reason I can't water anything. Is that the point, or am I missing something?

Ok, I'm attempting to download Little Falls, but can't seem to do so. The site is here, but all the links lead me to foreign language nonsense. Any help?

The solution to Robot Gardening is decidedly more obtuse than it should be, because it's a simple and great idea. Basically, you have to be standing in a certain spot to do something you'd think you would be able to do from any area in the game.

It's not IF as such, but if you find it, Jordan Mechner's The Last Express is essential gaming. Set on the Orient Express, it can afford to play itself in real-time and involves all sorts of intriguing characters. The former is one of gaming's biggest conundrums done right, and works simply because it's set in a small area, the latter is, well, simply something we should see more of, really.

This is a game that's hard to find, esp since it's on gametap. Any help would be appreciated in locating it.

i used my free trial of gametap just to play last express. it's two weeks, and apparently when you try to quit they'll offer you another week. i didn't take it. you have to quit by phone, which is the annoying part.

Hey, this is pretty awesome. Even if I never will play Adventure, I know some of you kids get a kick out of this stuff.

This is a silly comment. I have now officially looked at, searched, and examined every object that the game will recognize.

I will state this: the game does not recognize that there is grass even though the game has it in the description. Nor does the game recognize grass, ground, or floor for that matter.

I am giving up on robot gardening. This is my fourth attempt or more and it's just frustrating at this point. Thanks for ignoring any requests for hints.

Oh, yeah, that's right. We were supposed to be in IN at the same time (and, like, I was!).

Anyways, I'm obviously asking to be spoiled then.

Or like, the "code" needs a bit more of a brush up so that I know when I'm going in the right direction at least.

Put it this way, when you were trying to look ground, look grass and look floor, you were looking the wrong way.

I think everyone got stuck on this when it came out, but the few people who worked it out without hints felt incredibly proud of themselves.

But the game gives you no help in figuring this out. For example it could say:

>Look at grass
There's no reason to look there

>Look at floor
There's no reason to look there

But no, the game gives:

>Look at grass
You can't see any such thing

>Look at floor
You can't see any such thing

The thing is that even items in the discription of a locations can't be seen in the game until you type the proper words. Another thing is that the flowers aren't in the East room by the pipe, but the discription says that you can see the pipe in the West room. Why can't the discription say "There aren't any flowers here" or something. The game may have some mind reeling solution that will make me feel like an idiot, but the game still needs to be polised to be considered anything but unhelpful and obtuse.

And I still can't figure out what your hint is trying to point me towards doing.

EDIT: For some reason I just realized there were more areas than Hilltop and Eastern Field

Hey, can we talk about more adventure games here? I'm wondering if it's worth my while to purchase The Blackwell Legacy. The demo holds promise and I like the university suicides premise, but has anyone played it in full?

I can't talk much about Adventure games, let alone specific new ones, but I'll bring up that I don't like graphic based adventure games anywhere near as much as I'm enjoying IF. Graphical Adventure games take all the discriptions and flexability which comes with it out of the Adventure. Something is only as good as you--or someone else--can draw it. On top of that I end up spending quite a bit of time pixel hunting (clicking on everything just to see what I can interact with). These things have led me away from GA and something that IF has sparked in me again.

Both of these things I have thought were dead for years. Games like Hotel Dusk and Trace Memory reminded me that I really don't like GA games, but the stuff I've been trying here reminds me about the power of imagination.

Sorry, I'm not helpful here at all, I know.

I'm currently working on conciously generic text adventure that should last around a minute or two from start to finish, but I have to shamefully admit that I have very little experience in the genre. Can someone here give me a good list of verbs that text adventures tend to recognize?

Is anyone interested in coming up with something for me so that I don't have to think?

I wrote a game in Inform 7 and it was fucking ridiculous. It was just a room with two things in it, a bloke called Keith and a door. When I ran it I found that you could pick up Keith and the door.

Eleanor and I played Robot Gardening, Dess, and she found it really annoying. It's mainly because you cant LOOK AT SKY, LOOK AT GRASS from wherever you are in the game. It really needs some polishing.

i'm sure you're right. i made it in a weekend, as my first ever piece of interactive fiction, for a small, friendly competition. i'm reluctant to polish it because i'm sure it would take a huge amount of work to bring the game up to my standards, and i don't have the time to invest in that kind of undertaking right now.
