I've got some extra dough saved up, so I was going to go and join the HD generation. Do I have to buy the "elite" model to make sure I don't set my apartment on fire or something utterly stupid like that? Because forget it.

Also, I was going to do this with what I think is a fairly nice flat tube VGA monitor (I think it's nice but I don't really have anything that outputs VGA to check it with. It turns on and I can play with the settings, at least). Good plan/bad plan?

The VGA thing is a pretty good plan. I'm using a LCD computer monitor with my 360 right now and it works fine. The only caveat is that the colors might be a little more washed-out through VGA; that can be fixed with fiddling with settings though.

As for which 360 won't blow up, if you can get one with an HDMI port, you should be fine. There are Premiums now which have these ports and it'll say so on the box -- these 360s also use the new 65 nm manufacturing process, so they should have the major fatal error that takes down most 360s fixed.

Okay that sounds pretty good. Now all I have to do is grapple a best buy employee to death to get him to let me shuffle through the boxed units they have.

Not true exactly. The new premium 360s (20gb HD + HDMI) have new heatsyncs but NOT the new falcon chips (65nm). The heatsync is more important for overheating anyways, and when the falcon chips come out I'm sure they'll have a whole new slew of problems anyways. Bascially, the best bet is to get a new premium one that has the little HDMI logo on it. The falcon chips are to be rolling out later this year.

EDIT: It may totally be worth it to buy the Best Buy extended warrenty. I've already used mine once under a condition that would have cost $150 for MS to fix and may be using it again soon because my disc drive won't close properly (it ejects everytime I hit close and I have to keep hitting close many, many times). The extended MS warrenty only covers the three red rings of light (which I still haven't gotten) and the 1 year version doesn't cover everything anyways.

Huh. What's that, like $50? Also, if I get the warranty at one best buy, am I covered at all of them?

It might be less than $50, but yes about that. And yes, ALL of them. I bought my 360 in New Orleans and exchanged it in St. Louis.

I asked a BB employee about this last week -- it's $60 for two years. That covers everything, including controllers and wires. The MS three year warranty only covers the RRoD, everything else is still under a one-year warranty. I usually shun the BB in-store warranties, but with the 360 it's worth it because of all the hardware issues.

I'm getting a 360 this month (finally!). It's not really worth waiting for the 65nm falcon board, as that is only a shrink of the CPU -- and it's the GPU that causes RRoD, and who knows when that will be shrunk?

I'm just going to take the plunge despite all the hardware bullshit. And I HATE it when the stuff I spend my money on doesn't work. That I am willing to spend $400 on a device that I very well know could break just speaks to the quality and depth of the software library.

Hey, if you haven't bought your 360 yet, be aware of a deal at Circuit City today (Sunday the 2nd) and Tomorrow (Monday the 3rd) where you get a free wireless controller and a copy of Rockstar's Table Tennis with the purchase of a $350 Premium system. I thought they'd stop giving out free controllers when the price dropped, but nope! Good deal!

Huh. I hadn't heard that. Thanks for the tip. I definitely want a second wireless controller, but those things are expensive these days. I'm not buying a wired one, though. F wires.

also emphatically recommending you pick up a charger pack for your controller. those things burn through batteries like crazy.

$50. and i wouldn't go the battery pack route - you either need this stupid, preposterously expensive proprietary charger, or a cable the plugs into the front of your console and looks ugly. just get some rechargeable AA's.

(PS quit consoles)

tempted to QUIT CONSOLES FOREVER ITT

I'd have to get a windows machine or take up something more productive though, and neither of those sounds like a lot of fun either.

Yeah, I paid about 25 dollars at current exchange rate for my play and charge kit after staff discount. It will save your arse many, many times.

Also Rumble Roses XX: shit, not even fun as a joke, about as erotic as a Volkswagen manual. Do not buy Rumble Roses XX.

Wes, thanks to your Circuit City tip, I am now the proud owner of a 360 with Space Giraffe, and my wife is cheerfully playing the demo of Catan.

I am well pleased.

Yeah, I went to CC today to check on that deal. It is indeed a sweet pack o stuff, but the store in my city did not have the newer HDMI Premiums in stock. No way I was going to do that when I could go to Best Buy 200 yards away and get one with an extra heatsink and a quieter DVD drive.

If they'd had them, I'd be playing it right now.
