I'm about 2 years later, but I just beat RE4 and got to work on The Mercenaries. Good times!

(Luckily, sometimes 2 year old games get ported to new systems to make it easier to enjoy)

Hey, I'd argue (and I have) that RE4 on Wii is a very different experience than the original version(s)—and a much improved one, to boot. Who wants to aim with an analogue stick anymore?

Well, having played both, but never beating it the first time on the GC, I'm right there with you. The Wii aiming really works with the game.

(the first time, I only got up to the part where you have to play as Ashley, at which point I called bullshit and put the game down, then my friend took his gamecube back to sell it in preparation for the Wii's release)

Just started "Jeanne d'Arc" - aka the Joan of Arc story, with all of it's listening to God & killin' of the English but this time with Demons, Fireballs and Magical Bracelets - on the PSP.

Only maybe 4 battles in... but I like it so far.

It really reminds of me of Puzzle Quest interface wise, but with Final Fantasy Tactics style gameplay instead of, well, Bejeweled. There seems to be quite a deep sense of strategy to the game.

I don't really like the cut-scene style (a bit too boring animated-style) and the voice-acting can be pretty funny (oh, faux french accents... very classy) but the game itself is pretty beautiful. Off to a good start, at any rate!

I'm not sure I would call them that.

Anyway, started playing Ico, have mixed feelings about it. The opening tried very hard but felt and looked like a long cutscene from Ocarina of Time. The animation is nice though, at it's best Ico reminds me of the first two Prince of Persia games.

Ok, I thought I was crazy for thinking that might have been an Agent Cooper quote.

Dracko,

I don't feel like I've got to know you over the course of my time reading the Gamer's Quarter. You strike me as a cold fish. You need to take a chill pill. Have you ever thought about joining a local football team?

In your next post I want you to write 50 words on the subject of love.

Been playing Tempest X a LOT lately. Not very good at the though. Guess I'm doing it because I don't have a 360 yet, and therefore can't play Space Giraffe.

I also kinda broke the game last night. It was weird!

Tempest X is pretty crazy--it's very interesting comparing it and Tempest 2000 since the developer made lots of little differences in the design. The original is still better, though.

Also, Lestrade: your posts a few pages back made me pick up RE4 Wii last week. Thank you! This game is a wonderful, beautiful thing. And the aiming! It's making even the most bland and unbearable parts of the Castle playable. Also, I tried a shooting range mini-game last night. The Wiimote actually made them fun!

I've also been playing Excite Truck, but there's a whole thread over at SelectButton about that. Basically it's the best racing game I've played in a long time. Note: I don't play many racing games.

I have to tell you, elvis, I'm not going to click that link. It got some great talk here back when it first came out. Dessgeega and Toups, mostly.

I'd love to time a Wii purchase to a simultaneous Super Mario Galaxy release and Excitetruck price-cut. Excitebike 64 is probably my favorite racing game.

I had the Saturn version of 2000 for a while, but that was some time ago. Can you remind of the differences?

After finally getting a Wii last month, I've been slowly checking things out -- mainly at first it was Wii Sports and Virtual Console stuff. Last week me and the wife and a friend cruised through Warioware in about 2 hours, which isn't as bad as it sounds as the previous games probably took about that long to get through it and it's all worth it for the one dancing minigame, which I'm at least decent at now.

Tonight we gave Wii Play a shot, which would have been a complete raspberry except for the Tank Game.

I think I've seen Kirk(?) rant and rave about this game; it's totally worth it. In fact, it justifies the price of the game by itself. It's old-school, charming and extremely fun with two players. I'd like to see a game, VC or otherwise, that took the same basic mechanics and beefed up the experience a little bit, by having various upgrades and whatnot. It's a great object lesson in how the controls of the Wii can be used to make what would be considered a videogame standard feel fresh.

the tank game is so good. it's basically a nes game for the wii remote. it has two-player co-op! people complain because the goal isn't to kill the other player; did they have a childhood?

I would totally prefer it if the goal was to kill the other player! Like Atari 2600 tanks?? Fighting computer players is boring.

You mean like COMBAT. THE GAME IS COMBAT.

Anyway, it's fun being a team player, but a deathmatch mode would have been appreciated.

Yeah, throw in upgrades, the ability to generate random "tables", allow the players to either play co-op or deathmatch, allow for 4 players to play at one time; that would be a pretty tight little VC original title.

Maybe add a second shot type, where hitting the button would root the tank to the ground and you could use the Wiimote to aim an arced shot, such that you could fire over the wall obstacles.

i've never heard the term "jap's eye" before. that's almost great.

i finished phoenix wright 3. it's a really marvelous send-off to all of the original gyakuten saiban cast.

overall logic / puzzle report: nearly every situation in the game made complete sense to me, even as i was uncovering totally crazy shit. i never hit on a solution i didn't understand. there was exactly one solution i can think of that i felt was reaching a bit, but nearly all of the times i checked a walkthrough i knew the solution but couldn't figure out how to present it. this happened maybe five times.

lifebar report: the lifebar's still super-dumb, and i used the save & suspend trick throughout the whole game. i made surprisingly few mistakes, though, with the exception of those few vague spots. i would have made it through one of the later trials without a single error if i hadn't overthought one obvious solution.

closure report: every outstanding mystery in the phoenix wright series is resolved in the final act.

final act report: holy shit.

spoony bard report: there is a joke about a spoony bard.

new games journalism report: i caught the names or internet handles of three superstar games journalists. whether their presence is intentional or coincidental i cannot say.

godot report: fuck yes.

terrible pop culture jokes report: terrible joke about milkshakes. terrible joke about sparta.

terrible internet jokes report: yes. also, see above.

gyakuten report: right on.

6 years later and I finally beat Halo 1 (on Heroic, in co-op). Report: Not too shabby! It actually holds up really well these days thanks to the stuff everyone talks about when they mention Halo: Good AI.

I still think the level design's a bit too confusing, but I never realized that the second half of the game was just the first half of the game played backwards and with a different enemy set, so that kind of makes complex level design a bit more understandable. Up until now I've always stopped at the Library, but this time I played all the way through the library and to the end of the game in one sitting. I never really got lost on the final two stages because I already knew the levels and they were finally generous enough to provide waypoints, making these sections a blast. My favorite part was the snowy valley filled with tanks and rocket-wielding flood that you fight through to make your way to the two banshees on the far side. I died a whole lot, but definitely felt rewarded when I finally made it.

It's amazing how non-dated the graphics look given that it's a launch game from the previous generation. The endgame two-kilometer drive to the pickup area is, from a technological standpoint, probably the highlight of the Xbox's lifespan. They throw every enemy at you at once and you drive through fairly non-repeated architecture for around 6 minutes straight. I'm sure other parts were probably more difficult to implement, but the way that drive is set up it just feels like you're supposed to be impressed (and that's something I like!)

Conclusion: I can now see why many people consider Halo to be one of the best games ever. If I were a bigger fan of the genre it would definitely sit near the top of the pile for me. Given that I don't particularly love straight FPS games, If it weren't for a good friend and the well-implemented co-op I don't think I'd have ever made it through. Glad I did though!

Seriously, why aren't you all talking about Jeanne d'Arc?

It is really good. I'm almost tempted to start a thread about everything it does right.

If only The Library wasn't in that game.

Also what the heck is Jeanna d'Arc

It's a tactics RPG by Level 5 (who did Dragon Quest IX). I went today to try to Trade my free copy of Madden DS for it and found out that it's not being sold at Toys R Us! They're also not selling Heroes of Mana or Rune Factory, which I find odd. I'm wondering if carrying every game to come along hasn't lost its cost-efficiency what with all of the 3-month-later price drops and all.

At any rate, I will probably pick up Jeanne De' Arc soon, but for now I'd be down with a new thread! I'd like to know what I'm missing.

because as loyal subjects to the british crown such vile frank plots are not to be tolerated?

also: japan.they're like those guys up by the fulton mall who will sell you the secret stories of history. (protip: egyptians invented rockets and freemasonry, and raw vegetables have magical powers. also somewhat pricey soap that's quite nice!)

still playing through bioshock myself, just a meanderin' along.

I even get hand write formulas! It's like I'm mapping my way out of a horrible, life-draining dungeon.

I can't get past the OLS Formula stage though.

i'm replaying the first phoenix wright. (partly as research for an upcoming critique of the lifebar in phoenix wright that i am writing.) adventure games on handheld devices are pretty swell. i wouldn't play one on a long trip, but i like that i can curl up with them in bed the way i could with a book.

for some reason, the part of the original phoenix wright ds i have the best memories of is the final episode, the one that was added to the ds version when they re-released it. maybe it's just because the final witness really does feel like a final boss, moreso than any other phoneix wright character (except maybe the original final boss of gyakuten saiban 1).

playing it, i really appreciate how much more focused the cases in the third game are. and how much worse the english script is. the world also feels really small. by the end of the phoenix wright trilogy, phoenix is surrounded by friends with whom he has long histories. here at the beginning of the first game, his closest ally is dead, and all he has to rely on is near-strangers.

maybe it's just that the central characters have not yet been forced to question their convictions, and face the transformation that comes of that. everyone feels like a first chapter.

the last game. the second two english scripts just lack the sass of the first. there's too much exposition, too much explaining jokes. the first game reads a lot better, presumably because they couldn't take the success of the game for granted. maybe there was a different localization staff too.

I have Metroid Prime 3 reserved and am picking it up today. Many photos of me Wii-waggling my way to victoly will surely follow. Post photo requests, if any.

That comes out today? Ugh. Well, you get to tell us how it is so that I know how badly to avoid it.

I'm getting Wild Arms V tomorrow! It had better be good, because I really shouldn't be spending these $35. Evidently, the first printing gets the same deluxe treatment as Persona 3.
