Ok, I use to think that Super Stardust was too hard and way too cheap.

Over the weekend I broke the game though and found out that it's way too fucking simple and now the little things that irritated me about it before are even worse. Anyways, the problems include:

a) Vehicle has no momentum. This may sound minor but when you stop moving the stick that ship is at a dead halt, no slowing down, on or of. Which, hey, that's cool with digital, but not analogue.

b) Sound is boring and tedious. Not that I'm fond of Geometry Wars music, but at least they do interesting things with the sound from time to time (or you can put on custom sound tracks).

c) Too hard/easy. When I found out that there was a super-dash button it completely broke the game. This dash not only gets you out of any situation and across half the sphere very quickly, but you're invincible when you do it. I never was using it before because I figured it was just a quick escape button but you couldn't collide with anything or it would hurt you. Anyways, it's too easy with it, and it's too hard without it because the game will frequently dump enemies/rocks on you that you're not fast enough to get away from. It's a poor balance issue and I went from not being able to beat the first level for a long time to instantly beating all the levels up to the final boss when I figured out the dash was invincible.

d) Horrible camera. This is honestly my largest problem with the game because there are many times that routes are blocked off to you only because when you're heading down you can't see anything in front of you after you get close to the bottom. Umm... did that make sense? Basically the world spins and when you're traveling down on the screen the ship is at the bottom but things are constantly scrolling which means you can't see what's in front of the ship so you have to take different routes just because of the camera. (that still probably isn't clear).

Anyways, I meant to bring this up recently (that I figured out SShd is broke). While it's more playable than GW from a completion/score perspective, it's not as ... uhhm, fun. And I'm not even a very big fan of GW.

I finally downloaded Super Mario 64 last night for VC. I'm not sure if it's the heavy hand of nostalgia making me feel this way, but playing that game just sends ripples of joy through my whole being.

Hyperbole aside, I think playing the game just takes me back to the N64 launch, which is interesting considering that didn't get the console until after Goldeneye was well established. But I do remember renting one, as well as SM64, with a friend and then standing there slack-jawed for quite some time. I already had a Playstation at that time, but it took Mario to convince me that 3D was not the devil.

I started playing the game with the Classic controller and then switched over to my trusty silver GameCube pad—a big improvement. The GC pad is really, as I'm sure you all know, the N64 controller done right. I am one of those freaks who actually really likes the N54 pad, because it's just so damn comfortable. And playing SM64 made me want to run out (at one in the morning) and buy a used N64 again, because that system just has a special place in my heart and I miss everything about it: the giant controllers, the form factor of the system, those nice, heavy cartridges, everything. (Maybe I still will, though SM64 on Wii is res'ed up and looks beautiful.)

Playing the game also reminded me of some technical N64 standbys that I've always found relentlessly charming (no, really!). Super Mario 64 was nothing if not efficient, and even today I love how so much of the "3D" world is composed of 2D sprites; coins, enemies' "arms," trees; they all look vaguely 3D rendered (hello Donkey Kong Country) and have a soft, beveled look that I just love. The coins, for instance, look like scans of clay models, reinforcing the notion that you're in a giant playground. I would love to see some DS games that reprised the great tradition of mixing 2D and 3D elements in this way. In 1996 it felt familiar yet deliciously new and exciting.

Anyway. Super Metroid comes out tomorrow and I am excited as fuck.

Man 64s are pretty darn cheap. Mine might as well have Wave Race 64 permanently soldered into it though.

I've only bought Toejam & Earl, Kirby's Dream Course (which I'm horrible at) and Devil's Crush on the VC so far and since I was a jackass and got too many points, I'm always tempted to try buying something only I have a thing for not buying games I already own or trying something sight unseen. So, if anybody has any recommendations for the VC, I'd be happy to hear them.

Does the PS3 store follow any pattern for updating? (i.e. the VC's every Monday @ 9am type schedule).

Definitely good to know.

Do they have a press site (akin to Nintendo's http://press.nintendo.com/loginSplash.jsp) where they post what was updated each week? I find the store itself isn't the most organized.

edit: Not nearly as nice but I found this link http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=psnetwork&thread.id=47399 that seems to stay up-to-date.

i bought a hard drive for my 360 in anticipation of getting an actual 360 in less than two weeks!

the seller agreed to throw some demos on there for me. which ones should i get? (i have a bandwidth limit, so this would be great for me).

ps turns out i CAN still play american games on my wii (until nintendo nerfs it some more I guess) so our deal is still cool. im sending it out this week! assuming you recommend more demos!

the demos i have on my xbox right now are bioshock, stranglehood (good ideas, poor direction), and lost planet (which i havn't played because you can only play it with some xbox shmuck). get the crackdown demo, because it demonstrate what's good about the game (jumping between buildings).

hey! whoever i told could have my copy of crackdown: who were you?

I don't think I've played for very long but I'm really cruising through the game. Fuck you, Spore Spawn; fuck you equally, uber-Kraid (brought him down really, really quickly). Looking forward to the Crocomire battle. Loving the Ice-Spazer (what a good band name). Dash-jumping all over the fucking place.

I almost sequence-broke the long vertical room in Brinstar, just before you enter Maridia for the first time (the area that you need the Ice Beam to exit once you've dropped all the way down); my wall-jumping skills aren't very good, though.

Aerisdead, post a photo of your progress. Let's make this a Super Metroid photo porn thread.

If I loved this game any more, I'd be guilty of polygamy.

Outside of the ones Dess mentioned the only others I can think of are Dead Rising (you're better off just buying it though) and Prey. Prey is possibly the best demo on the 360 because it allows you to play the best part of the game and it's like a freaking hour long. If you really enjoy the demo don't get the game!

Some PS2 games look all right stretched, but 16- and 8-bit games need to be 4:3, yeah. I'm almost tempted to haul out the old SDTV to play Metroid on, though, just because. It looks phenomenal on this TV, though. So crisp and vibrant; I can see a lot of detail I couldn't before.

Anyway, the game plays perfectly well with the Classic controller, but I have to say; considering that Nintendo doesn't allow GameCube games to be played with it, why did they add "action" to the shoulder buttons? It never really bothered me until now. N64 buttons were all digital, so I'm not sure why this controller allows for "pull-and-click". Maybe they originally intended it for GC games too?

Still, the game plays very tightly, as it should. I've had no issues. I also like how I can hit the Wii Home button to pause my game so the game's clock doesn't continue while I'm in the bathroom, etc. Might help me get a better ending!

I played one round of Space Giraffe last night and it was pretty good. Really confusing, but pretty good. One complaint I have is that some of the sound effects are too abrasive and caused my woman to make me turn the sound down.

But what I really want to talk about is the other game that came out yesterday. What's it called? Street Trace? Holy crap is it awesome! I totally didn't expect anything worthwhile at all after all of the half-assed original games that have been coming out, and the horrid, horrid visual design doesn't help it at all, but the game itself is surprisingly great.

It's basically a deathmatch version of Tony Hawk. You skate around a level looking for opponents, griding pipes to get to different areas and grabbing power-ups, shooting someone when you see them. Sounds kinda blah, but it's just done very, very well. If you've got a 360 download the demo. I'd like to know if I'm just totally crazy in how much I enjoyed it.

EDIT: Actually, that's an aspect of PC death and repetition I don't think I've seen discussed, outside of your Rule of Rose article.

I don't remember anything outside of the glass breaking and it escaping. There was a breif "The baby metroid that samus saved and cared for" discription, but yeah, actually playing M2 is quite a bit different. To me at least.
