Silent Hill 5 interview

Possibly the most unreadable color scheme I've seen in a hell of a long time.

i'm gonna commit some serious heresy, but the nes version of ultima 4 still looks the best out of all versions.

Really? Care to elaborate? I know about Sim City and Picross, but other than that, a lot of the titles coming out look....questionable.

(also, how do you feel about The Wild West - depressed or angry?)

i was pretty much referring just to nervous brickdown and that pinball construction game. which i know next to nothing about, but pinball construction games have a history of being pretty neat.

the wild west seems to be a touch-screen-controlled wild guns - that seems like a pretty good idea.

ultima iv nes isn't bad at all, though it suffers a bit from console-itis.

New Manhunt 2 trailer.

Hilarity. The Wii version of the game will include bonuses such as:

- Three exclusive weapons, a straight razor, mace and a broken bottle.
- The ability to decapitate enemies and wear their severed heads on your belt, which can be used as both a weapon or a distraction.
- Rockstar has used the Wii's horsepower to "Up the Gore", such as realistic blood effects, bruising, gunshot wounds, gashes and head wounds. In addition, blood will also spray the screen during combat and executions.

indeed. the music is actually good. and you can do useful things for a console rpg, like use a ranged weapon and a melee weapon without having to swap from one to the other.

like many ultimas though, it is best played with a single party member.

A couple of days ago a friend of mine was playing Panel de Pon DS on his flashcard, and I mused that, if Nintendo took as long as they did to bring Picross over, we're bound to get Panel de Pon in another year. Then I checked the stories on nintendo's summer schedule again and slapped my forehead in bemused surprise.

NYC burning witches at the stake: News at 11

An interview with American McGee. Honestly, I thought Alice was terribly designed, and everyone else thinks all his other games suck. I think that familiarity was clouding their eyes. It was a neat concept with cool aesthetics, but as a game it was crap. He also has a crappy name!

Lastly, some ridicule for the new IGJA style guide. There’s some decent points here, but it also allows me to bring attention to the IGJA style guide.

man, a class e felony?

other examples of class e felonies include insurance fraud, criminal sexual behavior (indecent exposure joined with harassment, or what's called criminal sexual abuse - i.e. forced touching/groping) and the like.

i mean, the industry's playing this all wrong and has from the get-go, and i generally don't care about id-requirements regarding children or extra labeling and other political grandstanding but turning this into a felony is beyond the pale.

Wow, the New York Times is spot on about Odin Sphere:
“This mix of cute, childlike characters and angst is not uncommon in Japanese games aimed at older children as well as adults, but I find it odd. It is like watching a first-grade class perform “Hamlet.””

Though I wouldn't rank the writing up with Hamlet, I would say that the metaphor is apt.

Whoa! There is now a free Civ III mod available that lets you re-enact and alter Canadian history. This is just so cool. Fuck, I wonder if I can "find" a Mac copy of Civ III? I would love to try this out.

New Chou Aniki sekrit project announced. Honestly, I never expected this series to pop back up. Didn't the PS2 game do terribly?

You remember Monster Rancher and how you spawned new monsters off of data from CDs you put into the PS1? Well, Dragon Tamer: Sound Spirit will do the same thing with music using the DS mic.

Videogames Cure Cancer!. Kinda.

Vincent Baker on creating RPGS and other media. Specifically touches the question of thematic resonance. Vincent Baker is the creator of the utterly brilliant RPG Dogs in the Vineyard.

I haven't been interested in the DS for over half a year now, but this looks really cool. It's a new game by indie developer Renegade Kid called Dementium: The Ward — a first-person survival horror game featuring a nicely implemented flashlight. In fact, this is exactly the idea I wanted to see actualized on the Wii, so maybe if this is successful something like that could yet happen...

Anyway, that looks really damn nice for the DS. On par with Silent Hill 1, if not better.

That and you play by focusing on a specific combat role (infantry, air, support, etc...) rather than having to micromanage massive armies perpetually, along with using political power as the sole form of resource gathering, determining reinforcements as well as the weaponry you have access to, which includes napalm strikes and tactical nukes, which you deploy on fully destructible terrain.

Also, it's the spiritual successor to Ground Control and takes place in an alternate past where the Soviet Union invades key NATO positions while fighting on a diversionary front on American soil.

so holy shit the forthcoming interactive fiction documentary "get lamp" has a pretty amazing list of interviewees. implementors, scott adams, don woods, contemporary authors, zarf.

i would probably burst if emily short were involved, but she is purportedly too cool for documentation.

Dementium: The Ward, survival horror FPS for the DS. It's such a personal little system, this could be really good. It probably won't be, but I'll cross my fingers anyway because I'm in the mood for just such an experiment.

So the new id engine is just Doom 3 capable of large outdoor areas?

The Darkness looks terrible. It looks like you're playing as two hands with guns in them. There's no understanding that when you're playing in first person you're playing as the eyes of the protagonist, not the cameraman.

Trash.

And I was kind of looking forward to it.

If you've seen the SeaDragon video - the one where a bunch of images from flickr are taken and they zoom up, out, and go all over the place without a loss in quality, with the focus being that only what's on screen is what's taking processing power - this is essentially that, but in a game engine. It's continuing from the Doom 3 engine '4' and with '5' it's expanding so that you can have a ton of detail, as in a field of individual flowers with unique textures, without a hit on your system because nothing but what you see is what's requiring resources.

So you want to be an ARCADE champion?

A blog by one of the guys from Way of the Rodent where he goes through a full MAME set and the Twin Galaxies score book to see which games have high scores that are reasonably attainable, with the aim of getting the high score in at least one title and encouraging others to do the same.

So I was hanging out at gnomes lair, when he linked to a website called racketboy having a competition. I've never been to the site before, but it's actually pretty great and I suggest you all check it out.

The competition involves linking to a favourite article, so I'll go ahead and link to this series of articles called Games That Pushed the Limits. Good stuff.
