That reminds me of another story.
The squirrel is a wily and a vicious creature. _________________

The other day, I came upon a squirrel drinking out of a leaky sprinkler head. I was about a foot way from it, as it was merrily sipping away. I wish I could have taken a picture of this, because I had never seen such behavior from the campus squirrels before. Usually they just run in circles on tree trunks trying to rape each other. Campus squirrels are all rapists, as far as I am concerned. |

if you feel uncomfortable walking to class you should call your campus' safety escort service.

During high school, we spent a lot of time on the UC Berkeley campus and had a running in-joke that the campus squirrels were actually robotic spies used by the administration to keep tabs on things, with a whole network of underground tubes so that the "squirrels" could report back to their masters.
Also, if you haven't seen the squirrels at Yosemite National Park, you haven't fully experienced squirrels:

So I mentioned there's an albino squirrel that lives somewhere near my house right? I see him in the backyard with relative frequency but I've never successfully captured him on film. Unfortunately with winter beginning it's going to be impossible! I hope he stays around.
There's also a squirrel with no tail around here. When he climbs trees he has to wrap his whole body around the branch or he'll fall off. This is both sad and comical. _________________ | Little bird fighting against a bat sect game | |

There are a lot of freaky black squirrels in cleveland. Rumor has it they were a by-product of some experiment at Kent State. They used to regularly commit suicide by jumping out of thet ree on my dad's front lawn and meeting the driveway. |

I forget if I've only mentioned this to dhex, or passed this story along online previously, but back when I was a kid, I had this crazy neighbor who hated the squirrels that would dig up her flowers, so she managed to kill them (poison?), would cut off their tails, then put them at the end of a broom. And to deter any further attempts at garden ruination, she would shake her crazy shaman dead squirrel stick at them. |

And oh, hey, dhex, the other day about a week ago, when it finally turned cold in the city, I was having lunch in the park, and I was pretty much the only person there since it was again wintry cold (I personally love the cold, and just wanted to be away from the office), and this fucking squirrel tried to steal my Doritots. He was pretty shameless, and normally I'd be ecstatic to be in such close contact, but I was pretty annoyed and tried to scare him away, but nothing worked for long. I'm assuming he had fucked up and didn't have anything stored for the winter. |

fort: this was madison square park? that place is ridiculously squirreled up. they're used to being fed, to the point where they will stand up and act "cute" to get food. the wife and i have passed out some raw peanuts to the folks out there, in flagrant violation of nyc parks department regulations. (cooked peanuts will kill them, fyi)
showka: whoa! that's crazy. _________________

Indeed it was.
Also, I didn't know cooked peanuts can kill squirrels, so when I first arrived in America, I tried to feed some, which I had saved from my plane ride from Korea, and my dad went totally ape-shit and started yelling and screaming, way overboard. Which got like every neighbor's attention. And yeah, he was being kinda excessive. |

Hey dhex, my school has a Squirrel Appreciation Day every year because we have ridiculous numbers of squirrels on campus. I can totally get you a t-shirt if you want. _________________

so, okay.
i saw this squirrel munching on an ice cream cone. most of the cone was gone - only the tip was left. it was a squirrel-sized ice cream cone. this squirrel was just squatting there licking licking the ice cream from out of this tiny cone. i took out my camera to take a picture, and the squirrel turned and glared at me, then did a daring leap off of the wall and scampered away. this photo is all that remains.

At the bus stop on the corner of Finsbury Park and Manor House going into Green Lanes roam the cheekiest squirrels known to man. They climb onto people's shoulders. I nearly missed my bus just so I could play with the squirrels for longer. |

I took this picture at the Ripley's Believe it or Not in Branson, MO last week on my honeymoon. Thought it would fit in here.

oh yeah nearly forgot:
Quote: | The Mississippi Squirrel Revival
Well, when I was a kid I'd take a trip every summer down the Mississippi
To visit my granny in her antebellum world
I'd run barefooted all day long climbin' trees free as a song
And one day I happened to catch myself a squirrel
Well, I stuffed him down in an old shoe box, punched a couple of holes in the top
And when Sunday came I snuck him into Church
I was sittin' way back in the very last pew showin' him to my good buddy Hugh
When that squirrel got loose and went totally berserk
Well, what happened next is hard to tell
Some thought it was heaven others thought it was hell
But the fact that something was among us was plain to see
As the choir sang "I Surrender All" the squirrel ran up Harv Newlan's coveralls
Harv leaped to his feet and said, "Somethin's got a hold on me", Yeow!
Chorus
The day the squirrel went berserk
In the First Self-Righteous Church
In the sleepy little town of Pascagoula
It was a fight for survival that broke out in revival
They were jumpin' pews and shoutin' Hallelujah!
Well, Harv hit the aisles dancin' and screamin'
Some thought he had religion others thought he had a demon
And Harv thought he had a weed eater loose in his Fruit-Of-The-Looms
He fell to his knees to plead and beg and the squirrel ran out of his britches leg
Unobserved to the other side of the room
All the way down to the amen pew where sat Sister Bertha better-than-you
Who'd been watchin' all the commotion with sadistic glee
But you should've seen the look in her eyes
When that squirrel jumped her garters and crossed her thighs
She jumped to her feet and said "Lord have mercy on me"
As the squirrel made laps inside her dress
She began to cry and then to confess to sins that would make a sailor blush with shame
She told of gossip and church dissension but the thing that got the most attention
Was when she talked about her love life and then she started naming names
Chorus
The day the squirrel went berserk
In the First Self-Righteous Church
In that sleepy little town of Pascagoula
It was a fight for survival that broke out in revival
They were jumpin' pews and shoutin' Hallelujah!
Well seven deacons and the pastor got saved,
Twenty-five thousand dollars was raised and fifty volunteered
For missions in the Congo on the spot
Even without an invitation there were at least five hundred rededications
And we all got baptized whether we needed it or not
Now you've heard the bible story I guess
How he parted the waters for Moses to pass
Oh the miracles God has wrought in this old world
But the one I'll remember 'til my dyin' day
Is how he put that Church back on the narrow way
With a half crazed Mississippi squirrel
Chorus
The day the squirrel went berserk
In the First Self-Righteous Church
In the sleepy little town of Pascagoula
It was a fight for survival that broke out in revival
They was jumpin' pews and shoutin' Hallelujah!

This is both epic and heartbreaking.
I present: the tale of a squirrel who, in the distance, saw the perfect nut. A squirrel who would leap an incredible distance to grab hold of said nut... only to succeed and fall to its demise.
