hey shaper, check out the sadness:

I live in Utah, and that's great and all... but most of the time, stolen games are sold to pawnshops. However, this post helps me sleep better at night, because I had NO idea why they were suddenly taking my print at Gamestop.

see you in the camps!

man, i really don't get how you'd let yourself get thumbprinted BY A MOTHERFUCKING GAME STORE and NEVER FUCKING ASK WHY.

Woah, ouch! That's really going to hurt gamestop/eb games.

Funny enough, I picked up Season 1 of Rome at EB used once because it looked to be in great shape. I asked to see the discs just to make sure and they looked new. The guy behind the counter said:

"I'm pretty sure the guy just stole them at Best Buy and turned them in here. He had 3 HBO seasons of shows and about 5 different movies that were released that month he traded them in."
"Can't you do anything about it?"
"Kind of, but that's not my place."

Seriously, though, I don't see what this new law is going to do. If they're willing to steal, they're going to be willing to give up their thumbprint. Outside of stealing personal collections with names embroidered into the objects how are you going to prove their stolen? Games/CDs/DVDs don't have any unique codes or serial numbers.

cui bono is generally a good rule of thumb, if kept to reasonable levels:

who benefits? well, who has a stake in limiting the used market?

someone with more time should do some actual, you know, reporting (hi kotaku!) and look up the sponsors of this bill in each state and check donations to their campaigns for the past few years and then check soft money donations. i'm sure we'd see some hits from the mpaa, riaa and other lobbying groups. and probably whomever owns gamestop, since this is a great way to stop all indie retailers from participating.

That would be pretty great actually.

I don't think that any game related companies are going to be found in this though. Well, not retailers. GS/EB loves quick turn arounds on hot games. They get good money on new release games getting sold used, and this is basically going to kill that. It's also not going to be worth it for them to accept the lower teir/older games, because they're going to have to hold this stock that's only going to net them about $2 for 30 days before they can unload it.

Companies like Nintendo (who have gone on the record as not liking used game sales) are probably going to enjoy this, but not retailers.

hmm, i guess i presume that it's easier for gamestop to be the only game in town rather than a) having to compete or b) having to fight off bullshit lawsuits from nintendo et al.

this way you collude early, get forgiveness for your lese majeste in there and you're set.

that kind of piece isn't going to happen right away because a) it's hard work and b) game journalists are, by and large, sluts.

Not at all, man. Things were like this at my old EB. We'd accept the trade-ins, box them and write "5/13" on the side of them. There were days where the trade-ins were light, some were heavy. But boxing them up and putting them in the back isn't a problem for space and storage in most stores. There was never a shortage of used games/DVDs to put out, as every morning we'd go in the back and grab last month's box and put it out on the shelves. And a box in the quiet morning is better than during the day, when you're balancing about 15 tasks at once.

The previous law was two weeks. At worst, there will be a two-week period where they don't put anything new on shelves. For all the hassle, it's worth it. The number of consoles and games stolen from homes are rising every year. Furthermore, it's easy loot to sell. Gamestores, kids, friends, whoever.

Not giving cash for trade-ins will be a bigger cause for alarm to most customers.

This just started over here. I was surprised to hear the offer for cash or credit last time I was in at EB. How long has this been going on?

I like Steven Kent (author of Ultimate History of Videogames). He has a pretty good understanding of games, and has a lot of experience working with them. He was recently interviewed about adult content in video games and he really has his head in the right place. Unfortunatly it's nothing new, and almost like beating a dead horse at this point.

Possibly the greatest, most extensive, and largest arcade room project I've ever seen. It makes me a bit jealous.

Ten most memorable videogame quotes

Honestly... I didn't even remember some of those quotes and I've played most of those games.

That's worse than some of the GameFaq top ten lists.

For one thing, where the hell is "I AM ERROR".

And East Penninsula Is The Secret!

This list sucks!

Now I'm angry!

YAARRGGHHH

Number one is pretty good though.

Best Buy to waste money on a tool for parents that they won't ever use.

I mean, seriously, the ratings are right on the box and explain everything.

Geomtery Wars coming to the Wii and DS. Hey, this is kind of cool! I sort of like the idea of being able to move with the Wii nunchuk and aim with the Wiimote, if this particular scheme lets me rotate my firing as fast or as slowly as I like. The idea of it on DS is pretty neat, too. What do yy'all think?

n is going to be released on xbox, ds and psp. i knew about the xbox, since raigan told me about it almost a year ago, but the ds port is a nice surprise. raigan and mare told us at gdc that they were in talks with nintendo. it is pretty great that it worked out. i will play this game nine thousand times.
