onion i merely draw the broadest conclusions possible so as to not tax myself. the whole "them thar self-hating jews" routine is pretty fucked up.

some of my friends are super jazzed about lybrel. i don't see the fear factor myself, but i also don't eat seafood. not my thing.

in a related note not a lot of words rhyme with menstruation so it's hard to make up songs on the fly to help someone take their minds off cramping.

you basically get consternation, fabrication and mutilation. oh, and excitation.

girl i wanna hold you tight
while you undergo
menstru-aaaaaa-tion

that uterine shedding baby
causes such great
consternation

[chorus]
girl it's no fabrication
give you a standing ovation
your ovarian mutilation
causes great excitation

our river
our cranberry river
cranberry river of looooooooove

see what i mean? impossible material.

semi-related: party on garth but can you even begin to imagine how hilarious her phd must be?

unrelated: i am fascinated by the general idea that massive immigration is a plot by the corrupt elites. not as fascinating as the vt shooting being a black op, though. or the amish school one, mind you. i sometimes tell people i want to join the side of the global elites just because i like seeing peoples' versions of "it's already too late."

Nobody with half a brain is a first adopter of any technology, let alone medicine, but that clearly isn't what the fuss is about. What I'm saying is that sometimes, sadly, people reach the point where they no longer deserve the benefit of the doubt. Also sadly, I have to admit I have no idea what you mean about jews.

i've been a first adopter of some really good all-bran cereals. the weird thing about lybrel is that it's neither new technology nor technique, but new packaging.

anyway, you're not familiar with the term "self-hating jew?"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self_hating_jew

whoa. i'm a little surprise wikipedia has an entry for that. see also "false consciousness" i guess.

but uh to give an example, i remember reading an essay someone had linked me to a while back because the author was kind of stuck in that weird middle ground between second and third wave feminism, and because a few of the commentators were totally out of their minds. (one said that because her husband watched SVU and bad generic action films, she knew that deep down inside he hated women; another wrote of her desperate wish not to be straight; the usual stuff about men being subhuman pets at best).

despite the volume of comments they were a fairly tight-knit group, or at least familiar and social to a large degree (remembering and commenting on past posting habits, etc), at least between people whose positions were largely aligned.

one older poster (describing herself as retired, etc) was clearly more of a 2nd wave type - and may have been something of a newcomer - and in disagreement in the thread over several of the issues raised (i.e. are "good men" possible or will they always be hateful dogs and the like, etc) went back and forth with two other posters until some kind of explosion was reached; the only thing that explained the older posters position, they said, was that she was a man posing as a woman to troll their boards. or at the very least, may have well as been.

it was an event that got me thinking about the ic ethnography in various ways, at least in terms of non-physical communities and how they use social sanctioning to police their content.

ugh. i have to finish writing this week.

edit: big ups on the rhymes!

funny story: one of the women in my class is a rep for verizon dsl, and when i brought up various "verizon sucks" sites as a way to find workarounds concerning port forwarding she just kinda smiled.

that was monday. hmmmmmm...

still it's weird.

oh i meant ultima 4 up top never tried any of the others AND I NEVER WILL.

speaking of which:

Quote:
Civilization turned out to be a brittle behemoth that finally collapsed. The source of this tragedy was an almost fanatic obsession with money and power, which took on the proportions of a religion. People spent their lives chasing careers, only to die alone, aware of the fact that they just wasted the last 60 years of their lives. This was coupled with fanaticism and television that indoctrinated its viewers, telling them how to live and how to fulfill the “American Dream.” A crippled child begot by this deadly couple was frustration that ate away humanity from the inside. That was when the bombs fell.

i also wonder if age of decadence will be good too.

despite my lessons to the contrary, i sometimes read other game forums. and then i give up after reading pages upon pages about the two renderings/art elements released concerning fallout three. [which is an anagram for "FETAL ROLE HUT" btw and i would like to word filter fallout 3 into "FETAL ROLE HUT" if possible, mods.]

arguing about the realism or lack thereof in a shot for a game series in a game where the grasp on science was purposefully (and nicely, btw) distorted to serve the ends of the game world is spinning rims stupid.

fans are assholes in search of a human host. osho was wrong because the dude didn't play video games, too busy collecting cars and/or follower ass. game fans are like disciples, but their lives aren't actually deep enough to get into religious expression. they're not even good enough to get ripped off for magic prayer mats and the crystal cathedral. much less those neato kundalini hats.

sigh. it's "neo-pagan" bad.

ask dr. mao!

ok, so it's not really a joke or funny but i like reinforcing that no one ever went broke underestimating the capacity for magical thinking. ever. never ever ever.

though microwaves should be avoided for being shitty. true true, doktah mao. and canned vegetables suck, buy frozen if you can't grab fresh. all the extra BOOGA BOOGA CHEMICALS stuff is kinda unnecessary. (unless you're selling a book about BOOOOOGA BOOOGA CHEMICALS in which case it's homeopathically delicious)

then again, maybe i'm just pissed because i never got in on the ground floor on whole foods and the whole "organic" thing.

liam neeson is going to voice the main character's father in fallout 3. maybe a piece of me might want to complain, but I like the man's voice too much.

yeah, i mean...were it up to me, i'd ban voice acting from text-heavy games. it just don't make no damn sense outside of little cues here and there.

to be fair, i thought the lamer shaman in F2 was too much after a while. i just don't care for the stuff, outside of pockets here and there (mort in planescape, alyx in half life 2, actually all the voice acting in hl2 is good so, again, you just have to hire more than 3 people to do it)

i wouldn't be surprised if there's a lot of grand theft fallout going around, not because they got a recognizable a lister to do some voice acting but because he's supposed to be a prominent character. that kinda kills the whole "i'm out in the desert, just fuckin' around" thing. the idea of an oblivion with guns, mind you, isn't actually bad (screams of torment aside for a moment, just ignore them...) because you could go run around in the woods, and the content would be moddable enough so that angry animals could be turned off or tweaked, etc.

what i am most worried about is a kind of oblivion + kotor fusion where the worst elements of both are mushed together. blame it on teh konsole kiddiez or just bethesda having had its brains sucked out, or whatever, but game mashups are the rage these days. especially the third person shit that cross dev gives us because, well, i have no idea why. i hate third person over the shoulder. you get no perspective AND no immersion. the worst combination of the worst bits of isometric and fps design.

and now on the lighter side, hymen reconstructive surgery

the obsession with virginity is weird, to say the least. you could just fill a raquetball with ketchup and slap it around a bit and get the same effect, then meet a nice girl who knows what she's doing.

edit: to clarify -

a) the male obsession with virginity, i mean...
b) people should reconstruct all sorts of shit if they so choose.
c) the point here is that it's not a choice in the free sense, but more of a "avoiding injury and death inflicted upon you" thing. that's bad.

see i don't argue with people like that outright, and if necessary i just say "sure, i'm a dupe, but it's cool" and then they can have their catharsis.

everyone wins. my blood pressure stays low, they get to keep their mental universe intact - hell, they get to feed it. total win win scenario. (admittedly i do like to poke holes here and there, subtly)

edit: best hole poker is to bring up, slowly, "who *really* benefits from a narrative of governmental omniscience?"

the panic is delicious.

because everyone and their brother has sent this to me:

idiots who happen to be vegans starve child, film at 11

in their moral universe, breast milk was some kind of exploitation i guess. that makes damn near zero sense, but so do a lot of things.

edit: though i will admit to being totally bewildered by people who are pro choice but also vegan. omelet nay, blastocyst ok? i know there's more to it than that but as someone who enjoys making double binds this is definitely tasty (no pun intended).

double edit: i can also totally use the classic BUT SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE VEGANS cause its true.

new york has some good, good times, i tells ya.

a friend of mine once sent a friend of his on a prank blind date that was sort of like this (as revenge for a complicated icy-hot scheme involving underwear and a job interview). they had to stop being roomates a few years back due to an incident involving an old rotary style phone and a concussion.

read an interesting paper essay (that i don't have a link to and if i did, can't give out my ACM membership info for, so sorry) about filtering in online communities. like that cute little firefox extension that allows you to filter phpbb board users, or a custom script i use over at hit and run to get rid of the trolls (and conservatarians and 9/11 truthers and some fuckwit socialist types too).

anyway, thrust of this paper was that it's bad to filter people in a community. obviously i disagree. i like seeing pristine forest where there once were assholes. i can concentrate my energy on reading people who aren't fuckfaced fuckwits who fucking fuck fuck fuck.

ahem.

i know that authenticity is a big thing for a lot of people, and that somehow ignoring part of a community - even if they're just trolls - is a BAD THING. not only is the underlying assumption (that everyone has something worthwhile to contribute) mind-blowingly stupid, but it ignores the role of trolls, the existence of inter-community factions, and the fact that some people just don't get along. what about social sanctioning? (i've read a few papers on it, but most of them are describing the phenomenon by looking at HUGE communities like usenet, not smaller communities)

but how else does a community enforce values without resorting to being entirely private or invite-only? some people simply do not want to play by the rules of the set.

a great example of that, which i probably won't use in my paper, was dess' treatment of a certain mr. goodwin, which was to say the very least overtly hostile. and i was totally in favor of it! i'm fine with social sanctioning, and so is nearly everyone else (except those being sanctioned, mind you) so long as you ask the question correctly. there were a number of examples of that kind of behavior on IC as well, both overt and covert (and partially distinct from the general hostility some members displayed towards others, or towards nearly everyone in some cases - i think that's more of a personal issue, a coalitional issue or taking the whole performative aspect of trolling someone to an extreme and kinda getting stuck there. i.e. "soul cancer" and me.)

and now a prayer:

humwawa, lord of hosts, defiler, betrayer; lord of stenches and father of corruption - please help me finish my paper. in your name i will eat a whole bunch of garlic and chili paste and won't get laid for a week. thanks, bro.

What do filters provide that just not reading somebody's posts doesn't? Using them just seems ludicrously fragile to me, like Stalin having Trotsky edited out of photos. You may get rid of one person's posts, but you don't get rid of the posts of the people who feel compelled to respond to them. Or at least that's what I always counted on when I was trying to wind people up.

I was awestruck by the people who used to make a point of announcing when they killfiled somebody - how did they see that working in their mind's eye? I don't want to believe that it was something about the internet making people behave that way, and yet I can't see how anyone who acted like that in real life could survive. Getting someone to do that, then seeing them replying directly to you later on was like earning some kind of troll medal.

peace of mind?

well in my case i don't even have to see the silliness. plus i get these cool blotches of blog comments where nothing comes up but my nicknames for people:

"comment by sarcastro"
"comment by our lady of corn syrup"
"comment by hey look i have a blog over here a blog a blog i tells ya!"
"comment by internet tuff guy 2.0"

which is far more amusing than reading their cookie-cutter responses to xyz. seeing as the process is invisible to those being filtered or anyone other than myself, and it is utterly non-coercive*, it's a little bit different than attempting to edit history.

plus if you gather a coalition of the illin', then the responses are all either nonexistent or re-trolling. which is one of the benefits of a small community.

ultimately, we forget that earnest trolls are indeed fuckfaces. now, we've all been that troll, purposefully or out of mere spite for all that exists that is not a product of ourselves. and even "honest engagement" can be a kind of trolling with certain communities. non-coercive filters not only allow the community to do as they wish, it allows the trolls to do so as well until they piss of a moderator.

the announcement of a killfile placement, btw, plays two roles: the first is an announcement of coalition placement, and the second is the next step up in social santioning from just telling someone to stuff it. and after a while you get tired of telling someone, gently or not, that they're not welcome somewhere.

*obligatory libertarian reference

in other news, when indesign says it can convert a quark 4.0 document, IT LIES. it converts it in the same way genghis khan was a real estate developer.

That's the classic The Outbursts of Everett True. Ran from 1905 to 1927, I believe.

Some of the strips are archived here.

twenty-two pages down, six to go. of course now i have a killer sore throat. yay!

i should have been writing in early march instead of late april, duuuur.

item: allegra makes me fucking paranoid as shit. and productive - i'd edited two sections and saved them under a separate timestamp and everything. and i don't really remember doing this. i remember reading it over last night but nothing after that.

more creepily, i installed exult and the whole ultima 7 pack correctly. digital sound works and everything. when the hell did i do that?

though to be fair, if you have to have a blackout, i would think that a productive blackout beats nearly all.

i'm taking this as a cue to play ultima 7 i think.

Dhex, you've won me over to the notion of filtering. Do you have the name of that firefox extension?

What changed my mind? This bit right here played a big part:

ultimately, we forget that earnest trolls are indeed fuckfaces. now, we've all been that troll, purposefully or out of mere spite for all that exists that is not a product of ourselves. and even "honest engagement" can be a kind of trolling with certain communities. non-coercive filters not only allow the community to do as they wish, it allows the trolls to do so as well until they piss of a moderator.

I used to subscribe to the IF usenet groups: rec.arts.int-fiction and rec.games.int-fiction. That's where I first heard about killfiles and ignore lists. The prevailing attitude there was that they do more harm than good, since the main programs at that time all operated silently. Adam would post something, Brandon Van Trollery would respond, and Cathy would leave a nasty comment for Brandon--if Brandon was in your killfile, unless Cathy addressed him by name or quoted his message, it would seem that she was being nasty to Adam. And on the off chance that Brandon changed his ways, you'd never see his apology.

Those two newsgroups are largely irrelevant, these days. Despite the best efforts of people like Andrew Plotkin, the tide of trolls and griefers drove most of the community elsewhere. It's like you said: a dedicated troll isn't interested in reformation. He's interested in stirring up shit. It's far better to mute and forget.
